My thought is that one of the two CTEs returns NULL instead of zero so that accounts for the difference. |

Well, it's not that, exactly, but close enough. The original CTE with a group by on event_def doesn't return a row if the event_def is missing that day, thus inflating the count. The second CTE with the filter on event_def returns a zero. |
