10:27 dbs At some point I hope to be able to do the gradle-wrangling likely necessary to make it play nice with Android Studio
10:27 jeff yeah, i was going to blame gradle or inquire if gradle was the hurdle there.
10:27 dbs that's my assumption, anyway
10:28 dbs gradle makes the world cry a little bit :)
10:28 * tsbere wonders if he should implement enough in his attempted auth scripts to detect patron blocks or just stick to "evergreen said their password was good"
10:28 jeff whoever's asking about kindle fire -- you can get your android apps in the Amazon marketplace app without too much additional work. we did it for ours.
10:33 kenstir jeff: some other notes - I had lousy experience with Android Studio, it Just Works in IntelliJ.  Feel free to make it better.  Android Studio is stripped down and may be easier for noobs.  Interactively I brought up the emulator and launched the app in the emulator.
10:34 kenstir jeff: dbs: I don't know what the hurdle was.   I actually could build the app using Android Studio, I just couldn't find the source files to edit them.
10:35 jeff kenstir: yeah, the last time i played with Android Studio it was a similar experience in terms of "wow, this is... simpler, but so unfamiliar that I don't know if things are missing or just somewhere where I can't find them"
10:35 jeff kenstir: that was in the earlier days, and i was comparing it to eclipse not intellij.
10:36 jeff nice to see some additional options. phonegap's worked really well for us, but i still think native apps have certain... advantages.
10:38 kenstir jeff: is there a phonegap evergreen app?
10:38 dbwells kenstir: :)  I was going to add that I used Android Studio back in the day and it built alright, but I guess that wasn't really the issue.  Maybe next time around I'll give IntelliJ a whirl instead.

12:21 jeff the fun thing about playing with search is you find so many interesting bad records and potential existing bugs.
12:23 jeff At present, I suspect I'm running into another reminder of "the MODS 3.2 transform in the database is different"
12:25 Bmagic is there a database function that spills out the electronic bib scopes for a given bib/branch combo ?
12:27 Bmagic im using  asset.call_number WHERE owning_lib IN(SELECT id FROM actor.org_unit_descendants(4,1)) AND label = '##URI##' AND record = 511550 but that doesn't cover the case when there are no $9 and therefore should show up for everyone
12:27 tsbere Bmagic: If the bib is transcendant then the scope would be "everywhere" (and thus you don't need the $9s)
12:28 tsbere Beyond that not sure what you are going for
12:28 Bmagic I want to ask the db if this bib should be viewable at this branch in the case of electronic
12:28 jeff Bmagic: Is the "no $9 and therefore should show up for everyone" behavior because the bib source is marked as transcendant? Or are you referring to the staff-only behavior of "bibs with no copies show up for everyone"?
12:29 Bmagic unscoped URL's in the 856's show up for everyone by default (for us) and I assumed that was default
12:30 dbs Bmagic: the links will be displayed, but you need to have a copy attached or they need to be transcendent to have the record show up in search at all
12:30 dbs (in the case that there is no $9, that is)
12:30 Bmagic transcendent is a library setting?
12:30 jeff Bmagic: a setting on config.bib_source
12:30 dbs transcendent record source
12:31 jeff where config.bib_source has an id that can be referenced by biblio.record_entry.source
12:31 Bmagic the biblio.record_entry. source is null
12:32 jeff then without a copy or a 856 with $9 (and other relevant criteria), I expect it only shows up "everywhere" for staff searches.
12:33 Bmagic so lacking the link to config.bib_source I believe it shows up for the public
12:33 jeff And it is doing that because Evergreen says "bibs with zero holdings show up everywhere for staff".
12:33 jeff Bmagic: do you have an example record and public catalog url?
12:33 Bmagic I was just about to find one
12:34 jeff come up with a suitable search, and compare the results of staff and public search using those terms.
12:37 * tsbere usually searches for the bib ID/TCN in keyword search for this kind of thing
12:41 Bmagic hmm, I could have swore this was the case
12:41 Bmagic so, there isn't a built in function that returns the yay or nay for "this electronic record can be shown in this context" ?
12:45 yboston joined #evergreen
12:46 dbs Bmagic: that's complicated, but as soon as you bring "context" into the mix, $9s spring to mind
12:50 jeff Bmagic: the logic that handles that under a normal basis is contained within search.query_parser_fts
12:51 jeff Bmagic: and there is no utility function that I'm aware of what what you describe. If it were to exist or be created, it should be sure to pay attention to things like the config.global_flag opac.located_uri.act_as_copy
12:52 jeff Bmagic: depending on your needs, it may be useful for you to read search.query_parser_fts and adapt part of its logic either for your query at hand, or to create a new utility function/view. I'll admit to not having given the options there much detailed thought. :-)

13:22 jeff has 0 rows in metabib.author_field_entry: https://catalog.tadl.org/opac/extras/supercat/retrieve/marcxml/record/48078045
13:23 jeff has 20 rows in metabib.author_field_entry: https://catalog.tadl.org/opac/extras/supercat/retrieve/marcxml/record/45012480
13:23 jeff I have forced a re-ingest on the one with 0 author field entries, but it resulted in no more author fields, so I aborted the transaction.
13:24 jeff same for the other -- reingest resulted in 20 rows, so i aborted the transaction.
13:24 dbs So the ones with subfield $e get no entries?
13:25 dbs that's interesting.
13:25 jeff That seems to be the difference. The xpath from config.metabib_field when used in Python lxml does not seem to take issue with those subfields.

13:52 jeff (consulting the in-master SQL made sense when I started this -- but when I veered off into "well, how is it today?" land I forgot to double back and recheck my assumptions. :-)
13:53 miker question for the room: is there value in having more "author"-ish index defs for things like, say, actor, performer, director, etc? or should they just fold into author|other as stock master attempts to do today
13:53 miker ?
13:53 miker (which, I bet, is a question at least adjacent to jeff's aim)
13:57 gmcharlt I can certainly imagine collections where that would be handy
13:57 yboston heads up the DIG monthly meeting will start in in 3 minutes; 2 Pm EST

14:19 kbutler As far as I know, anything else I submitted was definitely added, so it should just be the 2.8 entry.

14:28 remingtron first, is anyone interested in claiming one of the remaining 2.9 tasks during the hackaway?
14:28 krvmga can you see me, too?

14:29 Bmagic yep!
14:29 remingtron I'd love to see the 2.9 tasks get finished

14:29 yboston I can mention it to the crowd after the meeting
14:29 yboston hello
14:29 remingtron yboston: thanks
14:29 dluch Sorry I'm so late, everyone!
14:29 krvmga dluch: hi, debbie!
14:30 remingtron dluch: welcome!
14:30 yboston no problem, sadly we are planning to wrap up early so we can have a face to face meeting on search at the hack-a-way
14:30 remingtron second, we should choose a DIG priority (or a few) to work on between now and release of the next EG version
14:30 yboston we all may continue talking in my absence,
14:30 yboston remingtron++
14:30 krvmga brb
14:31 yboston dluch: we have some features needed docuemntation in EG 2.8 and 2.9 if you have time
14:32 yboston do we want to start a thread on the list about picking some priorities?
14:32 dluch Yes, I've been meaning to take a look at what needs done. Will do so asap!
14:32 alynn26 I should have the last of my Documentation, by next week. Then I am looking at a total revamp of the Patron registration documentation.  There is a lot of information missing
14:33 yboston nice
14:33 yboston can I get a volunteer to email the list to ask about our prorities until the next release?
14:33 alynn26 I'll do that
14:33 yboston gracias
14:33 remingtron alynn26: that would be very helpful! there are many such gaps in the docs

14:34 yboston OK, folks I will like to wrap up, again because of the hack-a-way
14:34 yboston last comments or questions?
14:34 krvmga thanks, everyone!
14:34 remingtron dluch: feel free to post a link to them on the 2.9 needs page, especially if you get stuck and need help, or when they're ready
14:35 yboston (of course you can keep talking on the IRC line)

14:50 Bmagic the "Elizabeth" computer is located at the front, unmute it?
14:53 Bmagic phasefx: debbie left the hangout, there should be one slot open
14:53 dluch phasefx: I just left, so you should be able to get in- ?
14:53 jeff bah. berick is cutting out.
14:53 jeff he was saying that something which was important was... [unable to determine]
14:53 * jeff listens harder
14:53 jeff and all that comes from [lost] full text engine
14:53 jeff alas.
14:54 phasefx Bmagic: dluch: gracias
14:54 remingtron jeff: I think berick is talking about [external] full text engines
14:54 * jeff nods
14:55 Bmagic solr will introduce issues with opac visibility and scope searching
14:55 jeff Bmagic: care to expand on that?
14:55 jeff Bmagic: or were you trying to summarize what berick was saying?
14:56 Bmagic the perl logic that Evergreen is using to filter the search results may need to be reimplemented for solr
14:56 * miker listens and waits to jump in
14:56 Bmagic csharp could leave the hangout, since he is in the room physically
14:58 Bmagic Mike also?
14:59 Bmagic And Thomas is there in the room I think
14:59 miker some starting information: fts is the smallest time-cost in search
14:59 yboston I ask Chris to leave
14:59 yboston *asked
15:00 Bmagic Chris is gone, more room in hangouts now
15:02 csharp @eightball do I take up too much room?
15:02 pinesol_green csharp: The outlook is good.
15:02 jeff miker: do you have other data, such as what takes the most time? :-)
15:02 jeff (facets, filtering, etc)
15:02 miker jeff: indeed. stock master has a word order rel bump enabled. that doubles the time by itself
15:03 miker for, say, "the" keyword search
15:03 miker facets speed things up, actually -- they're exact match and filter records before vis checking happens
15:04 miker most time is spent in visibility checking
15:05 miker preferred language relevance bumping adds ~20%, even after removing the word order bump
15:05 jeff by "facets", i meant gathering facets...
15:05 jeff did you mean applying facets as a filter, or?
15:05 miker jeff: that's an out-of-band process
15:05 phasefx who's that speaking now?
15:06 miker applying facets makes it faster
15:06 jeff phasefx: that's jboyer-laptaupe
15:06 phasefx jeff: thanks
15:06 miker that's jboyer-laptaupe, I beli
15:06 miker :)
15:06 phasefx :)
15:07 jeff (back to berick now)
15:07 jeff miker: facets are gathered out of band, but tpac search results pages require facets be gathered (or timed out?) before returning, right?
15:07 miker some things to think about when considering external engines: conjoined items, containers (public and private)
15:07 jeff (i guess i could refresh my memory by looking at the code)
15:08 jeff hopefully someone in the room is taking good notes.
15:08 miker jeff: yes, however for all but the most pathological cases, that happens faster than the "give me the 10 bibs" part, which happens in parallel
15:08 jeff miker: got it. thanks.
15:09 miker re kathy's question: for fts, lots. for fts with tons of visibility checks, not many

15:09 * jeff nods
15:10 jeff i'd been watching that one. :-)
15:10 jeff actually, that's pullrequested now, isn't it?
15:10 * jeff looks
15:15 Bmagic it's hard to deny that those numbers are looking worse for EG systems compared

15:18 Bmagic It was a joke, adding to the hardware discussion
15:19 jeff oh, now i get it! :-)
15:20 miker doh, got kicked out
15:21 miker back in
15:22 jeff anyone have kmlussier's example publisher name?
15:22 berick free spirit (i think)
15:22 jeff thanks.
15:22 krvmga jeff: yes, it was free spirit
15:24 krvmga jeff: that being said, since we added (cwmars) publisher as an indexed (not keyword but indexed as publisher) term, the problem seems to be sorted out somewhat.
15:25 krvmga jeff: in other words, titles exactly matching free spirit (and titles are weighted more) show up before publisher free spirit (as publisher)

15:31 jboyer-laptaupe miker, nope.

15:32 miker k... sorry :(
15:32 jeff 19 rows here. neat.

15:33 miker jeff: I'd say remove them asap :)
15:33 Bmagic berick++  #I agree, EG numbers are not even close to the "internet" standards
15:33 jeff yeah. trying to remember why i thought those in particular were already gone.
15:33 miker jboyer-laptaupe: oh! dear... yeah, that'll cut your time by a good bit
15:33 csharp jboyer-laptaupe: I'll work with you to upgrade to 9.3/GIN this evening over dinner :-P
15:34 miker what was the question?
15:34 jboyer-laptaupe csharp, I have my new DB servers for the upgrade, just started installing OSes last week, heh.
15:34 jeff miker: oh -- they're all inactive.
15:34 csharp jboyer-laptaupe: awesome
15:34 miker jeff: k :)
15:34 jeff this returns zero results: SELECT * FROM search.relevance_adjustment WHERE active;
15:35 jeff miker: in this case, other than "remove them anyway", do you expect my 19 active=false rows to have much impact?
15:35 miker what rogan is saying, right there. we are effectively searching tweet-sized data
15:36 miker jeff: no
15:36 miker you're fine
15:36 jeff miker: phew. :-)
15:36 miker but, do remove them :)
15:36 * jeff nods
15:37 jeff so that i won't be surprised by them again ;-)
15:37 miker I'd love to surface browse data in a sidebar, like facets
15:37 miker (re leading users to related stuff)
15:38 miker and, sound cuts out right when jboyer-laptaupe is saying something important
15:38 * phasefx lost audio too
15:38 jeff and i've lost audio/video.
15:38 jeff well, other than the shared screen video.

15:50 miker I wanted to be there, and thought I might be able to come a the last minute ... but then things conspired against me
15:57 kmlussier miker: Just catching up on the logs. Word order - are you talking about the word order bump that came from search.relevance_adjustment?
15:58 miker kmlussier: indeed
16:00 miker .oO( will this be the marshmallow update, or just a 5.1.1 patch? )
16:00 kmlussier miker: OK, thanks. None of our sites are using those (I hope).
16:00 miker kmlussier: or, hope they are and get an instant speed bump! ;)
16:01 kmlussier miker: heh, that's another way of looking at it.

16:06 jeffdavis that spreadsheet comparing search times is quite useful, thank you to whoever put that together!
16:07 jeffdavis (and fwiw I expect many of Sitka's search times to get drastically better tomorrow, once I've applied a fix for 1438136)
16:07 bshum jeffdavis++
16:08 bshum I think kmlussier put together most of the spreadsheet
16:08 miker bshum: yep, 5.1.1

16:19 kmlussier We've been playing with http://textanalysisonline.com/nltk-wordnet-lemmatizer to see how the WordNet Lemmatizer handles word variations. We've been happy with the results.
16:19 jboyer-laptaupe Cool job, Ubuntu. One physical machine claims to be totally up to date on kernel 3.13, a different physical machine claims to be totally up to date on 3.19, both running Trusty.
16:20 berick miker++
16:20 kmlussier For comparison, a similar tool shows how words are stemmed with the Porter stemmer. http://textanalysisonline.com/nltk-porter-stemmer
16:20 kmlussier We've found that some of the words where we've had difficulty with the Porter stemmer (Pacific / Pacificism) are handled better through the lemmatizer.
16:22 gmcharlt kmlussier: "are is was" is a good example for showing off the lemmatizer, I note

16:25 jboyer-laptaupe My mystery solved: 3.19 machine boots EFI, needs a signed kernel, 3.13 machine runs plain generic. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

16:33 miker jboyer-laptaupe: can you put UEFI in BIOS boot mode?
16:34 jboyer-laptaupe miker, I probably can, but don't have a strong preference, just initially confused. (the EFI machine is MUCH newer and EFI is the future, so unless there are serious DB issues with 3.19 kernels, I wasn't worried about it anymore)
16:35 miker jboyer-laptaupe: I misread you "solved" comment. you want 3.19 over 3.13 for sure
16:36 jboyer-laptaupe Yeah, "mystery solved," not "action taken." :)

16:54 yboston does anyone know how to turn on the “activity.log” file on a vanilla EG install? I need it for some analysis of patron searches, thanks in advacne
16:56 berick yboston: if you enable syslog in opensrf_core.xml and run rsyslog it will start creating it
