The ou entry screen does not accept an email address with a hyphen, Is this a bug, or is there a special way of entering an email address with a hyphen? Escaping the hyphen with a backslash does not work, nor does enclosing the email address in quotes. |

Well, the 2.6 upgrade sucks. Plan on all the reingest causing problems and taking hours. |
09:14 |

Ours hasn't finished. I had to stop the reingest runs as it was interfering with everything that touches bibs. |

I swear it never took that long in training or development, but those databases aren't as busy even if they are on a wimpier server. |

anyone replicating multiple Evergreen *databases* with slony, using the same nodes (database servers)? I thought unique set/table id's would do the job, but it looks like the table name can't exist in multiple sets. anyone run into this? (<stdin>:15: PGRES_FATAL_ERROR lock table "_replication".sl_config_lock;select "_replication".setAddTable(2, 2, 'acq.acq_lineitem_history', 'acq_lineitem_history_pkey', 'Table acq.acq_lineit |

for the logs -- multiple config files, with unique node id's/names and specifying --config is the way to replicate multiple DB's -- just modify the name of the "replication" schema in slon_tools.conf to something unique. |

jane_1 |
I can't found |
11:22 |

if i use gedit to edit it. is it ok? |
11:23 |
jane_1 |
sorry wrong links "http://docs.evergreen-ils.org/2.6/_designing_your_catalog.html#_configuring_the_custom_templates_directory_in_apache_8217_s_eg_conf" |
11:23 |
kmlussier |
jane_1: What the docs there are showing you is how to create a custom directory in place of the stock templates directory and teach apache how to look at that template directory for local customizations. |
11:24 |
kmlussier |
jane_1: You then need to copy over any files from the templates directory that you want to customize locally. |
11:25 |
kmlussier |
jane_1: But, as I mentioned above, I don't think you want to edit the header.tt2 file to change those links. From what I can tell looking at my own files, you want to edit opac/parts/topnav_links.tt2. |
11:27 |
jane_1 |
is it ok to remove those links in footer.tt2 abd topnav? I mean I will just delete the code Link 1 ~ Link 5 so when I open evergreen I won't see those link again. |
11:30 |
kmlussier |
jane_1: I don't know. I've never tried removing them, just changing them. Somebody else in here might know if the catalog expects a link to be there. |
11:31 |
jane_1 |
then do you know how to visible = false this links? |
11:37 |

jane_1: There is a .hide_me and .hidden css class that you might be able to use. |

Question: can entries exists in metabib.browse_entry that does not link to a bib via metabib.browse_entry_def_map or that doesn't link to an authority record via metabib.browse_entry_simple_heading_map? |

sseng: yes, they can exist |
13:22 |
sseng |
eeevil: oh ok. then, how does one trace where it comes from? ( assuming can only trace to origin via the browse_entry_def_map or browse_entry_simple_heading_map) |
13:22 |
eeevil |
sseng: in practice, the percentage of that table that's "junk" should be very small, and the cost to keep it perfectly trimmed is too high to pay during record ingest. a out-of-band cleanup would be very simple if you're really in a situation where a significant portion of the the data is orphaned, though |
13:23 |
|
Shae_ joined #evergreen |
13:23 |

sseng: you don't trace where it comes from. it's a table full of unique strings. other things point at the IDs and say "I use that" |

think of it as a fact table in a BI-style schema |
13:25 |

13:28 |
eeevil |
I understand. which created the row isn't a question that those tables can answer -- the first inserter isn't important to the role of the data, IOW |
13:33 |
sseng |
eeevil: i see. (srry, fixated on where the browse_entry came from). from what you mentiond earlier, I undertand it is safe to delete "orphaned" entries in the browse_entry table. thanks for your help!! |

I'm nearing the 1 million bib mark, any ideas when the db gets too big for good performance? |

single server 4GB Ram, 1 core |
13:44 |
Dyrcona |
jl-: You're running everything on that one server? |
13:46 |

montgoc1 joined #evergreen |

I can up the ram and give it more cores |
13:47 |
jl- |
splitting up into 2-3 servers is also optional |
13:47 |
jl- |
whichever makes the most sense |
13:48 |
Dyrcona |
jl-: I'd definitetly put the database on its own server, preferably not virtualized, with SSD storage. |
13:48 |
Dyrcona |
For production, anywya. |
13:49 |
jl- |
Dyrcona: well I can use the existing DB and point a new server at it? |
13:50 |
Dyrcona |
On a development system, with very few people using, I tend to see out of memory issues and drones getting killed with just 4GB of RAM, when more than a couple of people use it at once. |
13:51 |
Dyrcona |
It's really hard to say what you need without knowing what your typical work load is, but I know you have a consortium of academic libraries. |
13:51 |
jl- |
right, it's still just a demo though, but ideally it would be a realistic demo |
13:52 |
jl- |
and I'm going to hand out logins for the staff client soon for staff to experiment |
13:52 |
jl- |
maybe I'll get away with upping the ram and cores for now |
13:53 |
Dyrcona |
We have approximately 1 million bibs, and we have 6GB and 6 cores configured on our training VM. |
13:54 |
jl- |
how does it run? |
13:54 |
Dyrcona |
We also have a separate database server for our training, test, and a development database, so we don't run postgres on the training vm. |
13:54 |
Dyrcona |
slower than production, but generally acceptable for the use that it gets. |
13:55 |
jl- |
is there a multi server tutorial? the official one is for all-in-one |
13:55 |
Dyrcona |
In production, you ideally want a database server with more than enough RAM to load your whole database at once. |
13:56 |
jl- |
geesh |
13:58 |
Dyrcona |
Note that I said "ideally," and it goes for any postgresql setup. |
14:04 |
Dyrcona |
jl-: There is some information on the wiki about setting up "bricks" as they are called. |
14:05 |
* dbs |
wonders how much SSD mitigates the RAM requirements for acceptable performance |
14:06 |
dbs |
Obviously, tons of RAM is always better, but SSD is still wayyy faster than spinning rust |
14:07 |
* Dyrcona |
uses spinning rust, but at least has configured RAID 1/0 of 140GB platters, for "better" performance. |
14:08 |
Dyrcona |
We have considered replacing the disks with SSDs but may wait until we get a new server. |
14:12 |
jl- |
we only have ssd |
14:13 |
jl- |
which is why I'll just ask for more ram and cores for now |
14:14 |
Dyrcona |
you should be all right for demo purposes. |
14:16 |
Dyrcona |
We have 9 people using our training server at this very minute and it is holding up. |
14:16 |
Dyrcona |
Acquisitions training, fwiw. |
14:19 |
jl- |
nice |
14:23 |
Dyrcona |
jl-: http://evergreen-ils.org/dokuwiki/doku.php?id=redhat_evergreen_cluster tells how to setup an Evergreen cluster with RedHat. I'm not sure how up to date this is. It looks pretty old to me. |
14:25 |
Dyrcona |
Searching for brick or cluster doesn't turn up much else of any use. |
14:29 |
jl- |
thanks |
14:30 |
jl- |
we're running eg on debian but the config files are probably in the same place |
14:35 |
Dyrcona |
jl-: You may want to check the documentation on evergreen-ils.org. There may be something there that isn't in the wiki. |
14:38 |
Dyrcona |
jl-: Yeah, the Evergreen stuff isn't that different. It's mostly the prerequisite installation and configuration that changes. |

In order for a hold to be targeted by the hold targeter, does the item need to be checked in at it's home library? Or can it be checked in at any branch and then get targeted for the next hold BEFORE it's routed to it's home branch? |
16:41 |
tsbere |
Bmagic: The latter |
16:43 |
