gmcharlt, I was just thinking that we might as well merge bug 2113979? We're running it in production (without the third commit which adds a URL exception feature). I'm not sure the bug is going to get new discussion at this point? It seems to be proving itself? |

plus, it's disabled by default |

good fodder for an infrastructure team discussion if we can make that happen |

csharp_: matrix does work for some people and some communities. i haven't found a way to use it that feels comfortable/useful yet. the barrier to entry also seems... higher, though that might be my past experience speaking there. |

I'm all for getting out of vendor lockin, if we could pull it off, that'd be ideal I think |
| 14:54 |

jeff: I've not used it, just saw LP uses it instead of IRC and got curious |

I, like Dyrcona and Bmagic yesterday am getting hung up on presentation slides |
| 14:58 |
Bmagic |
speaking of that, I'd like to highlight a portion of the conference email that went out yesterday: scroll down to the section on "Taming Everrgreen" - come to class prepared if you can! |
| 14:59 |
csharp_ |
haha - I missed that |

imagining us crashing hotel wifi like we used to do at every tech conference in the old days |
| 15:00 |
Bmagic |
exactly! Tryin to avoid that if possible |
| 15:02 |
csharp_ |
Bmagic: I remember at one of the conferences bshum and I had a station also on the wifi that served as an APT proxy to avoid that kind of thing |
| 15:02 |
Bmagic |
A thumb drive crossed my mind too |
| 15:03 |
csharp_ |
yeah, I was just imagining attendees fighting over who gets the USB drive next |
| 15:03 |
csharp_ |
MOBIUS branded USB drives with Evergreen on them! |
| 15:03 |
Bmagic |
yeah, and those are slow. The USB port is another bottleneck. It all just takes time, there's no way around it |
| 15:05 |
csharp_ |
troubleshooting your presentation is an awesome distraction from what I actually need to be doing! :-) |
| 15:06 |
csharp_ |
but I just though of bringing in an old school WRT router to serve your own wifi and have attendees connect to a local server that serves up docker stuff |
| 15:07 |
Bmagic |
that'd be clever |
| 15:07 |
csharp_ |
might have done that before too - I don't remember |
| 15:07 |
Bmagic |
hotel wifi has gotten better over the years, plus we all have hotspots to help out too |
| 15:07 |
csharp_ |
GPLS office network has always been insufficient, but in the really bad old days we did have to set up an in-house APT proxy |
| 15:08 |
Bmagic |
throw two USB drives in the middle of the floor and announce, 3...2...1.. Go! Stream it on Youtube |
| 15:08 |
csharp_ |
before we moved to ITS I used to do a lot more old school admin stuff |

i miss and do not miss the days where running a tech conference meant that you were also running the network. many late nights running cat5 down from roofs and through kitchens in order to ensure sufficient bandwidth for attendees. :-) |
