I think there's a bug in verify user password. It won't verify a non-hashed password. |
14:52 |
Dyrcona |
Also, I love how other vendors think we can just "debug" Evergreen. Oh, and how Evergreen is "they/them," when in this case it's me... |

Dyrcona it kinds of shocks me given how widespread open source is that awareness of what it means is yet to penetrate many think spheres |

I was telling this to Dyrcona earlier today, but my daughter, who is now a CS major, was telling me yesterday that she would like to try to do some work on Evergreen in her spare time this summer. I'm now trying to figure out if there is a way for her to get familiar with the software without getting overwhelmed. |
16:32 |
Dyrcona |
Not getting overwhelmed is the tricky part. I suggested that she sign up for the development mailing list, but we didn't have much time to talk about it. |
16:32 |
Rogan |
the learning curve is real |
16:33 |
Dyrcona |
And exponential. |
16:33 |
kmlussier |
Rogan: Yup. I've been on that curve. |

kmlussier |
I've been looking at the old wiki page for OPW to see what kind of tips we gave people to get started. Unfortunately, it's too late for her to get involved in that program or GSoC this year, but I told her to think about it for next year. They may have projects that offer a better on ramp. |

Well, if someone wants to stick to interface or just the back end, it could be easier, and since JavaScript is more widely known than Perl, I'd recommend the user interface. |
16:38 |
Rogan |
yeah, limiting scope helps |
16:38 |
kmlussier |
Dyrcona: Heh, javascript is exactly what I was telling her to focus on yesterday. I always found tpac to be an easier entry point. |
16:39 |
Dyrcona |
In the long run, there are more JavaScript than Perl jobs. |
16:41 |
kmlussier |
Dyrcona: Her plan is to be an independent game developer and not work for anyone. :) |
16:41 |
Rogan |
a fine goal |
16:42 |
Dyrcona |
Yeah, that is cool. |
16:43 |
kmlussier |
I think so. I have no doubt she could do it. She's very driven. |
16:43 |
kmlussier |
But I'm biased. |

kmlussier there is some stuff in newdevs that might be helpful: https://wiki.evergreen-ils.org/doku.php?id=newdevs:landscape:tree and also the August 24 UI group meeting went over how to find the right files: https://wiki.evergreen-ils.org/doku.php?id=community:ui_ig |
16:44 |
kmlussier |
sleary: Excellent, thanks! That's an idea. Maybe I could encourage her to sit in on newdev meetings. |
16:45 |
sleary |
We'd be delighted! There are some videos of past meetings that might help, like... Gina did one on setting up VSCode |
16:49 |
kmlussier |
sleary: I don't know why I didn't start by looking at the newdevs area of the wiki. There is a lot of good stuff there. |
