I took the liberty of adding a new tag in launchpad: release-process. Once we've gathered several bugs under that tag, I think it would be very interesting if a funder could sponsor some development to improve the release process, to reduce some of those barriers to releasing. |

I've reported a couple of bugs that might be appropriate for that tag. I don't have time to dig them up right now. |

opines that the update inventory from checkin feature was implemented poorly. Data is gathered in the backend, then sent to the AngularJS client to be updated via pcrud. It should have just been updated in the backend. |
10:23 |
* Dyrcona |
has to bisect a bizarre bug that started with that feature after our latest update on Monday night. Nothing related to that feature was changed except the IDL, and if the IDL was busted, nothing related to alci or aws would work. You can update alci from Item Status and workstations are working fine with other interfaces. |
10:23 |
Dyrcona |
I made a quick patch to deflesh the workstation because the console showed a fleshed workstation in the failure, but it still fails to update or create.... |
10:24 |
Dyrcona |
NB: It did not happen with a stock release on the same hardware and same dependencies. |
10:25 |
berick |
yeah pcrud will de-flesh for you during update |
10:26 |
Dyrcona |
berick: It gets crazier because the backend sends just the workstation id to the AngularJS client, and the client appears to use what the back end sends it. I would suspect a change in a dependency except it works with a stock release on the same data. |

Dyrcona |

OK. it works on a more recent Evergreen release, but that one may not have all of the patches or may have one that's missing. I can't rule out that we dropped something. |

Bingo! We have a winner! It was a backport of an IDL cleanup commit. Why that only broke this, I have no idea. |

Random comment. I have a library staff member who was troubleshooting SMS messages for StraightTalk, and found that switching those patrons to Verizon for SMS messages from Evergreen allows the messages to go through. This makes sense since Verizon purchased Straight Talk a while back, but I haven't seen any mention of that anywhere in the |
16:17 |
JonHGeorg |
documentation or the IRC logs. |
16:22 |
Dyrcona |
StraightTalk has not come up specifically before. |
16:22 |
Dyrcona |
I also think that the days of using email to SMS gateways are numbered. |

16:27 |
JonHGeorg |
I know that it's days are numbered, given how often SMS doesn't work. I just thought it should be mentioned. We're going to update the SMS carrier config to mirror verizon for straight talk so patron accounts don't need altered. |
16:28 |
Dyrcona |
I don't think we call out any specific carriers in the documentation, do we? |
16:28 |
Dyrcona |
There are some providers where it depends on service area which other provider's gateway you need to use. |
16:29 |
Dyrcona |
It's Verizon one place, AT&T somewhere else. |
16:30 |
JonHGeorg |
I don't think specific carriers are listed in the documentation for that reason, and they seem to change semi-regularly as they buy out each other, but I just thought someone might need that info. |
16:30 |
Dyrcona |
yeahp, and now it's in the IRC logs. |

Exactly. Thanks. It'll be interesting to see how the migration away from SMS continues to take shape. |
16:42 |
Dyrcona |
Well, I think we'll end up having to add support for various commercial SMS gateway providers, but not recommending any, leaving it up to individual sites to choose which one to get service from. I suspect that email to SMS will remain the default until it absolutely stops working. |
16:43 |
JonHGeorg |
Agreed. |
