10:22 sandbergja Cool presentation about writing Perl using voice control: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mz3JeYfBTcY (fun demo starts at 20:17)
10:23 pinesol [evergreen|Kyle Huckins] lp1735835 Transfer Bucket Contents to Pending - <http://git.evergreen-ils.org/?p=Evergreen.git;a=commit;h=ffcde0b>
10:31 Dyrcona sandbergja: Combine that with Emacs skeletons, and it just might be useful. Looks like more of a pain than talking to people, but I suppose if your RSI is that bad.... :)
10:33 bos20k joined #evergreen
10:37 sandbergja Dyrcona: yeah!  At the end of the video, she mentions that she just got to the point of feature parity with keyboard+mouse.  And her next step is to find ways that it works a bit better than keyboard+mouse.
10:37 rhamby sandbergia: there is always a better alternative than emacs :)
10:39 sandbergja rhamby: my partner is an emacs person, and I'm a vi person.  It's led to some interesting... uh... discussions?
10:40 rhamby sandbergia: emacs is like drinking decafe coffee, I will never understand why anyone does it but I accept it ... mostly
10:40 Dyrcona I'm not religious about it, but I'm a lot more productive with Emacs than I am when I vi. Skeletons totally rock! I can write dozens of lines of code with a keystroke, and I can have it wrap the boilerplate semi-intelligently around existing, non-boilerplate code.
10:41 Dyrcona rhaby: vi is like the decaf coffee....
10:41 Dyrcona Emacs is like drinking Jolt or Bawlz. :)
10:41 * rhamby has never heard of Bawlz and it doesn't sound like something he wants to drink
10:43 rhamby technically I use vim not vi usually, which I prefer to think of as a robust tea if we're using that metaphor
10:43 Dyrcona All my gamer friends used to drink it, almost 20 years ago, now.... /me suddenly feels old.
10:43 Dyrcona :)
10:43 Dyrcona Well, sure. I use vim mostly when I have to, except on *BSD where I thinks it's technically nvi?
10:44 Dyrcona My sincere opinion is everyone should use what they're most comfortable with using.
10:45 rhamby I think of nvi as a re-implementation of vi rather than vim but can't say I've ever researched it either.
10:46 rhamby Dyrcona: I do as well, productivity trumps ideology but I like ribbing you on it a bit too.  :)
10:46 sandbergja Dyrcona: hear hear
10:46 Dyrcona :)
10:46 sandbergja I'd never heard of nvi!
10:46 sandbergja I love the naming convention of just putting "new" in front of the name of the thing
10:47 Dyrcona I'm not sure which vi comes with the BSDs these days. I usually install emacs-nox or just edit files via tramp ssh mode.
10:47 sandbergja When I was a kid, we got a new cat, and named it... "New Cat"
10:48 Dyrcona So, I'm trying to figure out why autorenewal emails are not going out. Most of them have no recipient, but even the few that do are failing. Other a/t emails are going out, so must be the template...
10:48 Dyrcona I'll have to demo skeletons at the hack-away. It probably won't convince you to switch...
10:49 sandbergja Sounds like a fun demo to watch regardless!

10:51 Dyrcona I was thinking informally for anyone who is interested.
10:54 rhamby Dyrcona: I would listen with an open mind.
10:54 JBoyer Dyrcona, You should do it. When I demo'd Ansible the point wasn't to make everyone use Ansible, it was to get people to look at system orchestration in general. (or whatever the current buzzword is)
10:55 Dyrcona OK.
10:55 JBoyer I'm sure there's something similar in (n)vi(m) for those willing to figuring it out.
10:55 Dyrcona And, I think I see the problem with the template: extra line at the top.....
10:55 JBoyer Ah, busted headers?
10:55 Dyrcona JBoyer: I'm not so sure about that. Skeletons are kind of like TT2. :)
10:56 JBoyer Ah, reminds me of XCode snippets, except I suspect more flexible.
10:56 Dyrcona No, just an extra line at the top. It's being output with a blank line before the headers and that, apparently, confuses email::send/email::simple.
10:57 JBoyer And a blank line is the separator between the headers and the message, so busted. :)
10:58 Dyrcona Well, that latter blank line is "fine." But, yeah, it's a case of the parser being a bit...dumb.
11:08 Dyrcona So, yeah, looks like the blank line prevents one or both of Email::Send or Email::Simple from finding the headers, and [%- is not stripping the newline. (I should read the docs again to see if it says anything about newlines when it talks about whitespace.)

11:11 Dyrcona And, I'm pretty sure that I've encountered this before...
11:13 Dyrcona Related to editors: I always grin when Mac or Windows programmers ask me what IDE I use.... :)
11:17 Dyrcona And, this actually made it on Slashdot: https://www.nytimes.com/2019/06/24/movies/new-york-citys-libraries-drop-kanopy-streaming.html
11:20 JBoyer emacs can be outfitted into a "full" IDE if it's not considered one out of the box. ;)
11:20 JBoyer And I'm surprised that Kanopy story wasn't the one where they
11:20 JBoyer re emailing all of the patrons whose emails they collected and trying to pressure the library to pick it back up. :/

11:22 Dyrcona emacs: yeah... I've also heard it described as the "The O/S that thinks it's an editor..." though it's a Lisp machine, not exactly an O/S. :)
11:24 Dyrcona kanopy: yeah, i'm sure that losing NY, Queens, and Brooklyn will be a big loss for them, so no wonder they'd try to pressure them.
