09:12 * Dyrcona goes down a rt.cpan.org rabbit hole. ;)
09:16 * tsbere comes back inside from the fire alarm going off at the office
09:16 * Guest62103 looks at byte sequences of A255 and A256 in names and... wonders
09:16 Guest62103 speaking of names...
09:17 Guest62103 joined #evergreen
09:19 JBoyer So, if anyone has time (especially if you're considering a 2.11 upgrade soon, hint, hint, csharp) I'd appreciate more eyes on lp 1654567
09:19 pinesol_green Launchpad bug 1654567 in Evergreen "Replacing barcode creates duplicate copy" [Undecided,New] https://launchpad.net/bugs/1654567
09:19 Dyrcona That rabbit hole wasn't so deep, just 4 related tickets...
09:19 DanSteen joined #evergreen
09:20 Dyrcona tsbere: The alarm went off at my daughter's school yesterday afternoon, too. No explanation other than it might have been a malfunction and they'll have the company out to inspect it today.
09:20 DanSteen joined #evergreen
09:21 Dyrcona JBoyer | agoben: Nice catch!
09:21 tsbere Dyrcona: We don't have an explanation. It went off, and half the people in offices *ignored* it from what I could see.
09:22 Dyrcona Heh. Sounds about right. :)
09:32 kmlussier joined #evergreen
09:42 mmorgan JBoyer: I'm currently banging on a 2.11 system and can't reproduce that bug.
09:43 mmorgan Tried using replace barcode from item status and also from the edit menu. The barcode was replaced as expected.
09:43 JBoyer Here it's only happening from the menu.
09:43 agoben Use the Circulation menu entry
09:44 mmorgan Ah, ok. I'll try the circ menu
09:44 agoben Or, rather, please try it from the Circ menu ;)
09:44 agoben Sorry, hectic morning
09:46 mmorgan Still working as expected for me from the circulation menu. So you
09:47 mmorgan 're ending up with 2 items, one with the old barcode and one with the new?
09:47 agoben Yes
09:47 agoben Identical except for the circ history
09:47 * csharp looks
09:47 agoben well and all the other things tied to the item ID :)
09:48 _adb joined #evergreen
09:51 JBoyer I can't decide if it's a good thing or a bad one that it isn't reproducible. :/
09:51 csharp works on our 2.11.1 test server as far as I can tell
09:51 csharp usually feels worse when it's not reproducible in other places :-/
09:51 * JBoyer is leaning that way
09:52 * mmorgan just checked the asset.copy table and confirmed that it's not happening on our 2.11.1 system.
09:52 JBoyer I suppose that means I should stop looking at git.evergreen-ils.org and start looking more closely at our local branch.
09:53 tsbere Hmmm
09:53 csharp yeah, I can confirm that replacing the barcode from the Circulation menu overwrote the existing barcode and there's just one copy
09:53 tsbere JBoyer: Could serials be involved? I could see there being a bug with serial.unit vs asset.copy entries.
09:55 JBoyer tsbere, we're not using serials yet and all of these copy copies exist in acp.
09:55 JBoyer Good thought though.
09:55 tsbere JBoyer: I only mentioned it because serial.unit entries *look* like they are in acp but also aren't.
09:56 Dyrcona serial.unit inherits from asset.copy doesn't it?
09:56 Dyrcona yeah, it does.
09:57 JBoyer Oh, yeah. Tried again with select * from only asset.copy and they're all still there. Select * from serial.unit is 0 rows.
09:58 tsbere JBoyer: Well, that was my guess for a possible reason it wasn't being reproduced elsewhere.
09:58 * tsbere goes back to poking at a couple of bibs
10:15 bshum There's a bug for that too, serial.unit I mean
10:15 bshum JBoyer: Have you done anything new with org units lately?
10:15 bshum When was the last autogen you ran I mean
10:16 bshum Sometimes things like those interfaces go wonky post-upgrade if you don't do an autogen to refresh stuff if things move in any way.
10:16 bshum I think it happened to us once like that with replace barcode specifically
10:16 bshum Which is the only reason I bring it up
10:17 bshum And I was panicking for a few hours about what I did wrong during an upgrade
10:17 bshum Course my swiss cheese mind might just be mixing up cause and effects.
10:17 bshum It's Friday, right?  *big sigh*
10:19 JBoyer We changed the names of a few, but that's it. I can run it now just to see if that makes a difference.
10:19 bshum http://irc.evergreen-ils.org/evergreen/2014-11-14 <-- wacky memory
10:20 bshum It happened once in 2014 where doing an autogen fixed my replace barcode problem :)
10:20 bshum So I didn't just imagine it
10:20 bshum I have no clue how I remembered that, but uh okay then!
10:23 bshum "The names have been changed to protect the innnocent"

10:30 JBoyer Mystery over, bshum was right. I have NO IDEA why that would matter given the calls made and so on, but it's fixed, so I don't care anymore. Thanks
10:30 JBoyer bshum++
10:31 Bmagic yes, I agree with bshum, this sounded so familiar, replacing barcode causes duplicate copies. This happened to us.... and YES! It was autogen I remember
10:32 mmorgan bshum++
10:33 bshum Bmagic: Yeah I found two log entries in IRC actually.  Once in 2014 and once in 2015 where it happened both times to me and then to you :)
10:33 Bmagic haha!
10:34 bshum JBoyer++ # happy to have one less mystery  :)
10:34 Bmagic bshum: good memory! bshum++
10:34 bshum That's me, Ghost of Evergreen Past.
10:34 mmorgan So does anyone use a cron job to run autogen periodically?
10:35 Bmagic bshum: lol
10:35 Bmagic mmorgan: we do not
10:35 mmorgan any harm in doing that?
10:35 bshum I don't see any reason to do it periodically.
10:35 bshum it should only matter if you touch the org units .  Or apparently post-upgrades :)
10:35 Bmagic changing the org unit structure is about the only reason we run it
10:36 Bmagic we learned the hard way that we cannot edit the org unit tree during business hours
10:36 bshum Ugh... painful sounding :)
10:37 Bmagic click save.... ring ring, hello? "Yes, our staff client is throwing errors"....
10:37 bshum Anyone else remember "bootstrapping" web interface for org unit editing in 1.4 and so on?  :)  Seeing the in-client editor for the first time was like, whoa mind blown :D
10:37 JBoyer This is definitely something I'll be keeping in mind when we change all of the shortnames in a month or so...
10:37 bshum Dojo, haha......
10:37 Dyrcona JBoyer: You changed the names of some org_units and it caused the duplication?
10:38 * Dyrcona has to run autogen.sh.... :)
10:38 JBoyer Apparently.
10:38 Dyrcona We just changed an org_unit name this morning...
10:38 mmorgan just a thought. Seems like many hours can be consumed tracking down issues that get fixed by running autogen.
10:38 JBoyer Like I said, I can't fathom it by walking through the code but I ran it and retried and it was fine.
10:38 Bmagic hurry, run autogen before anyone opens the staff client and downloads stale org_tree.js files
10:38 bshum Haha
10:40 Bmagic mmorgan: exactly! I have dumped many hours to it. Then ran autogen and almost caused injury to my forehead
10:41 miker mmorgan: re cron'ing autogen, yes, nightly IIRC
10:43 mmorgan Nightly makes sense to me in a "can't hurt might help" sort of way.
10:43 mmorgan ... and forhead injury should be avoided at all costs ;-)
10:45 bshum @dunno get 4
10:45 pinesol_green bshum: Dunno #4: "Try restarting apache." (added by csharp at 02:44 PM, July 02, 2012)
10:46 Dyrcona Speaking of Apache... Is an apache reload necessary after autogen or is that just superstition on my part?
10:46 * bshum always bounces apache after every autogen
10:46 bshum Which is why I brought it up
10:47 miker Dyrcona: strictly speaking, should not be necessary, and we don't.  autogen de-populates memcache of objects it creates, IIRC
10:48 Dyrcona miker: Thanks. I recall tsbere telling me something like that a year or two ago, and I don't always restart apache after running autogen, but often do on my dev vms at least.
10:48 Dyrcona Sometimes, that's because I just restarted services before doing the autogen, maybe. ;)
10:48 _bott_ tsbere: You may find this useful, re Net::HTTP    http://pastebin.com/raw/HpMzeRK1
10:50 _bott_ That's the result of a few lines of Perl, testing read_response_headers()
10:52 * csharp doesn't usually restart apache after autogen runs
10:54 Dyrcona cssh++
10:55 Dyrcona bshum++ # For recommending cssh
10:55 * csharp googles cssh
10:55 bshum I miss using Linux in my day to day.
10:55 Dyrcona _bott_: Thanks. It's actually me that'll look into it. :)
10:55 csharp ah - gotcha
10:56 csharp KDE's terminal (at least used to in the early 4.X days) had that feature baked in
10:57 csharp wait - well not the cluster definitions, being able to send commands to all tabs in a window

11:29 Dyrcona I'm not so sure that bug 1654567 should be invalid.
11:29 pinesol_green Launchpad bug 1654567 in Evergreen "Replacing barcode creates duplicate copy" [Undecided,Invalid] https://launchpad.net/bugs/1654567
11:29 Dyrcona Yes, running autogen is necessary, but should we consider it OK that not running it leads to behavior like that?
11:31 Dyrcona I'm on the fence and asking someone to push me off, one way or the other. :)

11:32 * bshum pushes Dyrcona in the "there are other bugs in the sea" direction
11:33 bshum :)
11:33 bshum Following closely with the "what's for lunch?" direction
11:33 bshum And the "TGIF" direction
11:33 Dyrcona :)
11:33 bshum And the "It's 5 o'clock somewhere" direction
11:34 Dyrcona It's beer o'clock somewhere.... ;)
11:34 * Dyrcona is bummed that they stopped making Emotional Rescue Ale.
11:35 Dyrcona I'll have to get something else with my pizza tonight.
11:41 * kmlussier just noticed that her LP karma is currently at 666.
11:41 * mmorgan doesn't push Dyrcona in either direction, but hates to see those many hours wasted by neglecting autogen. Also wonders how many new users get discouraged when things don't work because autogen needs to be run.
11:41 Dyrcona Spooky. :)
11:41 bshum DUN, DUN, DUN!!
11:42 bshum Now remember, use your powers for good, not evil.
11:42 kmlussier By definition, I think 666 implies evil.
11:43 kmlussier But I'm about to comment on a LP bug, so I expect the number will change soon.
11:43 bshum Onwards and upwards!
11:44 bshum Till up from the ashes grow the roses of success!
11:53 JBoyer Dyrcona, there has been some mention here and there about doing away with the need for autogen; I'd rather see that as it's own goal than using this bug as a starting point to remove it. Either it hasn't been bugged yet or LP is just being LP, though.
11:54 Dyrcona JBoyer: Sounds good to me. :)
11:54 * Dyrcona falls off the fence.
11:54 kmlussier Dyrcona: I hope you didn't hurt yourself.
11:54 bshum All the king's horses, and all the king's men...
11:55 Dyrcona heh.
11:56 JBoyer That could be updated for dev work. "And all the kings horses and all the kings men couldn't get Humpty to give a single damn about bug 1234 again."
11:56 pinesol_green Launchpad bug 1234 in Launchpad itself "Gina is an unmaintainable mess of command line options, environment variables and shell scripts" [Medium,Fix released] https://launchpad.net/bugs/1234 - Assigned to Daniel Henrique Debonzi (debonzi)
11:56 JBoyer Hah, hadn't thought about that. :D Also, I'm really curious how that gets fixed...
11:57 bshum https://launchpad.net/gina -- funny :)
11:57 bshum XMPP bot, hilarious
11:57 JBoyer Apparently without comment given that bug page. o.O
11:59 Dyrcona I wonder if gina could be used to automate stuff in Evergreen by injecting commands into ejabberd?
12:00 Dyrcona heh. Fire up a Jabber client, tell gina to do something. It happens. :)
12:00 Dyrcona gina: run autogen.sh on brick heads.
12:03 Dyrcona Well, that's not so realistic...
