10:21 webmind ohai
10:21 webmind I'm trying to install evergeen
10:21 webmind evergreen
10:21 webmind but getting a bit confused
10:22 webmind before installing evergreen, you need install opensrf, is running 'make -f src/extras/Makefile.install ubuntu-trusty' enough?
10:23 webmind or does that only install the prereqs?
10:29 webmind I gues not
10:29 jeff that only installs pre-reqs, you are correct.
10:37 webmind I'm at chown -R opensrf:opensrf /openils
10:37 webmind but that user does not exist
10:37 webmind when kind of user should this be
10:37 webmind ?
10:38 jeff if that user does not exist, then you've missed at least one step.
10:38 jeff I'd recommend re-tracing your steps -- the directions for creating that user are there.
10:39 webmind creation of the user is not featured at https://evergreen-ils.org/documentation/install/README_2_10.html
10:40 webmind but the site claims it's done during the installation of opensrf
10:40 jeff > The opensrf Linux account is an account that you create when installing OpenSRF.
10:40 webmind ah yes
10:40 webmind and that docs is not the website?
10:41 * webmind finds the hopping between installation docs a bit confusing
10:41 jeff I don't know offhand, but it's loacated within the OpenSRF download for certain.
10:41 webmind it's in the INSTALL file
10:41 webmind but would be nice if the installation instructions are a complete document
10:42 webmind but I'm going to reserve more time at another moment for doing this
10:42 webmind it's a bit of a bigger operation than expected :)
10:43 jeff The fact that OpenSRF is a requirement and needs to be installed first (using its own installation steps and with its own pre-req makefile) could perhaps be made more clear.
10:43 jeff But once armed with that information, you shouldn't need to bounce between the two installation documents -- just OpenSRF first, then Evergreen. :-)
10:44 webmind also considering opensrf seems to be part of the evergreen project
10:44 webmind same download location

10:44 jeff Thanks for the feedback on the docs -- it's easy for those of us who have much of this in our heads to overlook gaps.
10:45 webmind what is opensrf btw?
10:45 webmind my pleasure
10:46 jeff It's the distributed messaging framework that the various Evergreen services use to communicate with each other, and clients.
10:47 webmind k
10:47 webmind how come there are no distribution packages available? too much extra work?
10:49 jeff There have been a few folk who have taken up the task over the years, with varying degrees of success/progress. I can't offer an educated opinion on "why", really. At my library, we use ansible to build Evergreen systems from a base Debian image with OpenSRF and Evergreen compiled on top of that.
10:50 jeff Other libraries / vendors have their own process for either building a cluster of VMs or for using packages/scripts to install Evergreen and associated related software.
10:50 webmind yeah, looking at evergreen for a small ngo
10:50 webmind who has a library of 2 bookcase
10:50 webmind cases
10:50 webmind I read scalable as also aimed at small organisations :)
10:51 webmind seem quite like a big system though
10:51 webmind (but no idea yet)
10:54 webmind is it suitable for small organisations?
10:57 jeff We're not that small, so I can't give first-hand advice. Evergreen can scale down, but there is a certain base footprint in terms of resources. You might also add Koha to your list of options to evaluate, if you haven't already.
10:57 webmind I only got this option mentioned
10:58 webmind so thanks
10:58 jeff Koha lives at https://koha-community.org/
11:00 webmind thnx
11:07 bshum jeff++ # Saturday morning Q&A
11:07 bshum This is a link I found on the wiki with various semi-automated install approaches for Evergreen
11:07 bshum http://wiki.evergreen-ils.org/doku.php?id=server_installation:semi_automated
11:08 bshum On the bottom of said list is a link to GPLS' package efforts
11:09 bshum We should dust those off and look at it more closely some day. Maybe.

14:41 jeff 264m49.093s on the attr-only ingest with 28 children and batches of 1000. All in all, not much shorter than the run last night with batches of 10,000.
14:41 jeff Though the box was under different load last night than this morning/afternoon, so that could be a factor also.
