He's going to start getting me into the communication loop on his side, but I wanted to make sure you, as the program coordinator, knew (and were alright with it), and could also start copying me on any communcations I might need from here forward. |

does anyone know of a reason we wouldn't want to treat "&" and "and" as identical in title searches? |
15:08 |
krvmga |
or equivalent for search purposes? |
15:09 |
krvmga |
since they are clearly not identical. |
15:09 |
csharp |
I can't think of a reason why you wouldn't want to |
15:09 |
csharp |
Dumb & Dumber/Dumb and Dumber - as an end user, I would want the actual title to come up either way |
15:10 |
kmlussier |
yboston / dbwells: I'm curious. Does that call number issue only apply to LC numbers or does it apply to Dewey as well? |
15:10 |
krvmga |
even if someone was being cutesy "The Life of the Ampers&nd", the 246 would have "The Life of the Ampersand". |
15:10 |
* kmlussier |
is trying to think of an equivalent Dewey situation, but my brain cells are running on empty. |

krvmga: "The story of so-and-so, &c." ? |
15:12 |
krvmga |
jcamins: that's an interesting thought |
15:13 |
gmcharlt |
"&" and " & " could be normalized differenlty |
15:13 |
gmcharlt |
or I should say, "\&\S" and "\&" |
15:13 |
kmlussier |
What the #$*! Do We Know!? the 246 is what the bleep do we know, but what patron would think to enter it. |
15:13 |
krvmga |
jcamins: http://www.wdl.org/en/item/3349/ as a case in point |
15:13 |
jcamins |
Fortunately, there is no word "andc," so it's unlikely that you'd get false positives. |
15:14 |
jcamins |
krvmga: yeah, "&c." is actually common enough that I've been known to write it myself. |

15:15 |

i write my ampersand like a backwards 3 with a little vertical line above and below it. |
15:16 |
jcamins |
Me too. |
15:16 |
krvmga |
perhaps i need a support group |
15:16 |
jcamins |
I only know one person who can write a proper ampersand, and I can't remember who that person is. |
15:16 |
kmlussier |
I wouldn't even try to write an ampersand. |
15:17 |
jcamins |
kmlussier: ampersands are awesome. |
15:17 |
* jcamins |
put an ampersand in the name of his company for that very reason. It may not have been the best choice from a catalog searching standpoint. |
15:17 |
kmlussier |
If I'm handwriting, I usually just write a plus sign for may ands. Much easier. |
15:18 |
kmlussier |
s/may/my |
15:18 |
jcamins |
kmlussier: easier, but less satisfying, alas. |
15:19 |
krvmga |
so how do i make "&" and "and" equal from the catalog's POV? |
15:20 |
jcamins |
krvmga: no idea, but now I want to do this for Koha, only making it translate & to "et." |
15:20 |
* jcamins |
knows how to do it for Koha, but that doesn't help you. |
15:21 |

is happy for jcamins. |

Not necessarily a related topic, but it reminds me of the bug mmorgan recently filed where we now have trouble with phrase searches that begin or end in punctuation. I had always seen one of Evergreen's strengths was its ability to find things like titles on C++. It would be nice if we could find out why that stopped working correctly. |
