08:21 bshum akilsdonk: Good morning!
08:22 akilsdonk bshum: :) now if only I were awake enough to be in the right channel...
08:22 bshum :D
08:29 graced It's never a bad thing to wish Evergreen channel a good morning.
08:29 berick and to receive a warm bshum welcome
08:30 * bshum has been singing to himself, "good morning" song for the past couple minutes.
08:30 * graced is now signing it, too
08:31 graced or singing even
08:31 bshum I don't know, today feels like it's going to be a good day. :P
08:33 csharp https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WRu_-9MBpd4
08:36 bshum csharp: Okay, that was fairly disturbing :)
08:36 bshum But I'm back on stride again :D
08:36 csharp bshum: didn't mean to throw you off - the conversation brought it to mind ;-)
08:36 bradl bshum: you mean the singing in the rain good morning song?
08:37 * csharp also thought of "Good Morning Good Morning" on Sgt. Pepper
08:37 bshum bradl: Right, yes.
08:37 csharp or "Good Day Sunshine" which is my wife's wake up song
08:38 berick csharp: sgt pep. is where I went, too
08:38 bradl bshum: great! I feel like I should be waiting for Magic Kingdom to open :)

09:08 Dyrcona The Joy of Software -- for certain definitions of joy.
09:12 csharp Dyrcona: does the new marc_export script output any information about records that are larger than 99999 bytes?  the old one just outputs "Record length of 223776 is larger than the MARC spec allows" (for example) from MARC::Record
09:12 csharp we're trying to identify the records that end up being too big when doing bibs + holdings
09:12 Dyrcona csharp: It might output to standard error. IIRC, MARC::Record does that.
09:13 csharp okay - I figured that was the case - thanks
09:13 bshum csharp: I think that was just a warning though, I thought it still attempted to output the record anyways.
09:13 Dyrcona I get a lot of messages about bad character conversions to standard error when I run it.
09:13 bshum Or maybe it doesn't when it's USMARC output selected, vs. MARCXML
09:14 * bshum remembers seeing huge records go through somewhere, sometime.
09:14 Dyrcona bshum csharp: Last time that I looked into it, the record that is too big gets output with size set to maximum, 99999.
09:14 * bshum hates that the warning is the size, not the bib ID
09:15 Dyrcona I recently had fun with a vendor who calculated record size using characters, while the standard and MARC::Record count bytes.
09:15 Dyrcona characters <> bytes
09:16 Dyrcona bshum: I'm not sure the bib id can be reliably determined at the level where the error occurs.
09:16 Dyrcona I suppose marc_export could be modified to check for the error and alter the output.
09:17 bshum Dyrcona: I figured that, I was just always confused personally because I would stare at that number thinking it was the ID and going wth when looking at the same ID in my biblio.record_entry and remarking on how small it was :D
09:17 Dyrcona hee hee.
09:17 csharp yeah, I just went down that road ;-)
09:17 bshum :D
09:17 Dyrcona csharp: Patches/branches are welcome. :)
09:17 bshum But yeah, that's what I thought too, that it'll export the record anyways, but set the size to the max?
09:19 Dyrcona I find that add holdings is what usually makes the records too large.
09:19 bshum Definitely.
09:19 Dyrcona Any bestseller that has 4 or 5 copies per library for instance.

09:26 Dyrcona Yep. I think the same is true for our biggest records.
09:26 Dyrcona It was also how serials were cataloged on our previous ILS, since we didn't have the serials module for it.

10:13 Dyrcona Yay for incompatible versions of packaged sowftware!
10:13 Dyrcona sowftware? oh well.
10:14 Dyrcona Incidentally, I recommend against upgrading to Ubuntu 14.04 on your servers at the moment.
10:15 * bshum likes 14.04 generally.
10:15 bshum But yeah, it's a bit premature to upgrade too much.
10:17 Dyrcona The upgrade hosed my laptop.
10:17 Dyrcona I had to reinstall fresh to get a bootable system.
10:17 Dyrcona My experience with the 12.04 or 13.10 to 14.04 upgrade so far has been painful.

10:30 Dyrcona Ok. Time to set EDI stuff on our training server.
10:33 * csharp hasn't seen issues using 14.04 on his desktops/laptop
10:34 csharp Dyrcona: what software is incompatible?
10:34 csharp Dyrcona: I'm working with EDI now too, FYI, if you want to compare notes at any point
10:35 Dyrcona csharp: I understand that Perl 5.18 causes some issues with tests in CPAN packages as well possibly our tests.
10:35 Dyrcona csharp: I know that Horde, ckeditor, and mobile jquery, are installed with incompatible versions.
10:35 csharp eww
10:35 Dyrcona csharp: The latter causes parts of Horde web mail not to function properly.
10:36 Dyrcona csharp: We're working on fixing the incompatibilities, i.e. by finding suitable code to install, and then we'll likely file bugs on Launchpad.
10:36 Dyrcona Not for Perl, though.
10:36 csharp yikes
10:37 Dyrcona Also after the upgrade from 12.04 to 14.04 on our mail server, we've had to reconfigure nearly everything.
10:37 Dyrcona The horde web mail system couldn't find most of its data, 'cause it went from version 3 to 5, and things had moved.
10:38 Dyrcona So, tsbere spent most of yesterday just moving stuff in the horde database.
10:38 csharp lots of moving parts

10:39 Dyrcona As for EDI, I'm using this documentation: http://docs.evergreen-ils.org/2.5/_installation.html
10:39 Dyrcona I'll set that much up today, since I don't have the information to configure any testing with vendors, yet.

10:42 csharp just to save you some gnashing of teeth
10:42 bshum Also, if you will have vendors who want the enriched EDI stuff, you'll want to pay attention to https://bugs.launchpad.net/evergreen/+bug/1297967 (which isn't finished yet)
10:42 pinesol_green Launchpad bug 1297967 in Evergreen "document openils-mapper code for enriched EDI" (affected: 1, heat: 6) [Undecided,New]
10:43 bshum It's one of the little things berick and I were talking about at Code4Lib but haven't finished up yet.
10:44 Dyrcona csharp: Thanks for the reminder. I had seen that message before, in the release notes, I think, but had forgotten about it.
10:44 Dyrcona bshum: Also thanks, I'll keep an eye on that bug.
10:45 Dyrcona csharp++ bshum++
10:45 bshum I approached mklein who was also at Code4Lib, and basically the code is abandoned at this point for the ruby openils-mapper stuff.  So berick and I were talking about making his the primary source to get around the missed details.
10:46 bshum mbklein, rather.  He was the author attached to the original source files.
10:46 bshum We'll get there.
10:48 Dyrcona I suppose that this is a big deal: sudo: gem: command not found
10:48 Dyrcona From running ./install.sh
10:49 bshum You installed subversion first right?
10:49 * bshum hates this part of EDI
10:49 Dyrcona Ah... package names don't match. script has ruby-gems, Ubuntu 12.04 has rubygems
10:49 bshum Yeesh
10:49 Dyrcona Yeah, I installed subversion.
10:50 * bshum thought he installed on 12.04 just fine, but it's been awhile...
10:50 * csharp is so far not impressed with ruby
10:50 bshum Maybe I did some hackery
10:50 Dyrcona err no. I mistyped.
10:50 csharp but that may just be a sign of my un-hipness ;-)
10:50 bshum I don't like this part of our infrastructure at all.
10:50 Dyrcona csharp: Nah, ruby was hip a few years ago, and still hipper than Perl or Python. :)
10:50 csharp well, it feels very much out-of-band
10:51 Dyrcona Yep. I agree that installing ruby just for EDI doesn't sit well.
10:51 * csharp squeezes into skinny jeans and heads to the coffee shop
10:51 berick csharp: you're not alone.. http://beust.com/weblog/2014/05/03/language-popularity-on-github/
10:51 dkyle I did a new 14.04/eg master install but  at the end, apache seg faults loading all but 2 of the openils modules in eg_startup. has anyone else seen this?
10:52 csharp berick: very interesting
10:52 Dyrcona Ah, well, its all very Discordian, this hodge podge of languages that Evergreen uses.
10:52 Dyrcona dkyle: Not yet. :)
10:52 * Dyrcona hasn't upgraded, yet.

10:57 Dyrcona Ah. As for my problem, I noticed a message that apt-get failed to fetch some packages.
11:00 Dyrcona For anyone following the EDI discussion: doing a sudo apt-get update before install.sh seems to have fixed my problem so far.
11:01 Dyrcona Guess my package list/database, whatever they call it, was out of sync.
11:01 bshum dkyle: Curious about one detail, did you use the files from apache_24 for your 14.04 explorations?

11:10 * Dyrcona jokes: Where are the instructions for nginx?
11:10 * Dyrcona ducks and runs.
11:12 bshum dkyle: Well, there aren't any updated instructions for 14.04.  I just remember seeing that the package number came up as 2.4 for apache, and that meant trying the files created for fedora which already uses apache 2.4
11:12 bshum dkyle++ # blazing trails (with fire!)
11:15 dkyle bshum: or burning myself.. the instructions do mention the apache_24 files I just didn't read them...
11:18 Dyrcona So, EDI appears to be running. Though, I haven't activated the pusher and puller scripts in cron, yet, 'cause nothing going on.

12:32 csharp so have there been complaints about being recorded/photographed at the conferences without permission? (just curious...)
12:35 bshum Perhaps, wouldn't know all the details myself.

12:42 jeff a bitmask of preferences encoded in the rgb hex representation of the color (how exactly would you error correct something like that?) is left as an exercise to the reader
12:46 jeff i would be interested to hear from someone (who i guess might not feel comfortable speaking about the subject) with a strong preference to not have their photo taken, with regard to their thoughts on being required to wear a special-colored lanyard.
12:47 bshum Fwiw, when I went to GSOC, we got to pick the green/yellow/red lanyards too.  I picked yellow initially and then switched to green as I ultimately decided I wasn't anyone special :)

12:52 csharp gmcharlt: thanks for that link - I guess I was not tuned in when the context for the lanyard discussion came up (at least regarding the EG conference)
12:52 jeff csharp: see, for a half moment i thought you were saying that someone had already written about the subject from the "you must wear this" angle (and even the Hawthorne connection, which I had not mentioned yet), then i got to the name of the person you were referring me to and realized you were joking. :P
12:52 csharp jeff: sorry :-/
12:53 csharp I'm feeling kind of snarky today - I should really stop it :-(
12:53 * csharp is almost to the end of a super busy spring
12:53 jeff csharp: but interestingly enough, searching on that shows that at least one conference used a distinct lanyard color to indicate first timers, and encouraged people to reach out to them, etc. i'd be interested in some more of that (though perhaps not using the lanyard) -- we may have had badges for that at one time.
12:54 gmcharlt csharp: is the end marked by a decrease in busy-ness or just the upcoming change in season?

12:57 gmcharlt jeff: the thread specifically relates incidents by a number of folks about harrassment via photography and other expressions of why some people prefer not be photographed
12:57 csharp jeff: hope that works out for you next year - we had a nice EG contingency this year
12:58 rfrasur bshum: you going anywhere exciting or get to chill at home?
12:58 jeff I also don't have a sense of what kind of photography we're talking about (and don't remember without looking if the policy adopted from the Ada Initiative (iirc)) does. I've been involved with some cons where the photography policy was "no photos without permission, and not even group shots or panning of an audience in a talk".

13:27 RoganH gmcharlt: I read through the article and comments and it doesn't change my opinion.  Most don't apply to the scenario being discussed in regards to presentations.  There is certainly a lot of horrible stories in there but I think its dangerous to conflate them all together.
13:27 RoganH gmcharlt: I'm not saying there isn't a legitimate concern but in the end in balancing it my opinion doesn't change.
13:28 gmcharlt we will have to agree to disagree then; given that there was a speaker at the last conference who did not want to be photographed, the issue is not theoretical
13:29 RoganH Note that I never said it was theoretical.
13:29 RoganH In fact I explicitly said I would be willing to accept the loss of some speakers.

14:18 dbs So upgrade from 2.5 to 2.6 on 9.1, then upgrade from 9.1 to 9.3
14:18 bshum dbs: That's the general idea.
14:18 bshum I think
14:18 bshum I didn't test it that way though, now that you mention it.
14:19 bshum I just did 9.1 to 9.3 first, then upgraded the rest of the way from where I left off in my numbered scripts.
14:19 bshum Ignoring any broken parts of the restore (since those were broken things fixed with the upgrade SQL)
14:20 dbs Yeah. I wonder if there are clear pros to either approach for "normal" sites
14:20 bshum Depends on how you do the PG upgrade I guess.
14:20 bshum I think we'll also be moving to new hardware at the same time for us.  So we have *lots* of moving parts in our equation.  :\
14:20 dbs Just trying to figure out if there's some standard way we should suggest getting to 2.6/9.3 so we can narrow down the number of possible paths to go wrong
14:20 * bshum isn't the best recommender
14:21 dbs possibly a new ILS and a new job for bshum after too many parts move in the wrong direction :)
14:22 bshum I'm like 90% sure this will be okay.
14:22 bshum Besides, mceraso is doing our next upgrade ;)
14:22 bshum I'm just "watching"
14:23 dbs I'm sure it will be fine too :)
14:23 dbs only because mceraso is doing the upgrade though, not old "twitchy-fingers bshum"
14:23 * dbs is in a strange mood, clearly
14:24 * bshum can't be hurt today
14:24 * bshum is too happy about going on vacation shortly.
14:26 gsams vacation++ #I get a short one in June
14:26 bshum Speaking of new hardware
14:27 bshum THE NEW DATABASE SERVER IS HERE!
14:27 bshum Hopefully with our shiny SSDs
14:27 bshum I'll get to touch it before I go.
14:27 bshum :D
14:27 mceraso For the next upgrade, all I hear bshum saying is, "With great power, comes great responsibilty."

14:31 gsams huzzah!
14:37 Dyrcona If you run the upgrade SQLs before doing the upgrade of the database to 9.3, then the database should restore just fine.
14:38 * Dyrcona chimes in a little late.
14:38 Dyrcona bshum: Are you doing your production upgrade or is this a test?
14:39 bshum Dyrcona: This is the hardware we're using for production upgrade.
14:39 bshum Though I guess we're testing it the next couple weeks.
14:39 Dyrcona bshum: I misunderstood when you said "mceraso is doing our next upgrade." I think I get it now.
14:39 Dyrcona We're upgrading this Sunday, Mother's Day, and I'm doing this one.
14:40 bshum Dyrcona: Ah, cool.  Our upgrade will be Memorial Day weekend.
14:40 bshum Doing both the switch to new hardware and Evergreen upgrade
14:40 Dyrcona We've had staff testing it on our training server for the past few weeks.
14:40 dbs yous++
14:40 bshum Dyrcona++ # going first this time ;)
14:41 Dyrcona Heh.
14:57 jeffdavis I need to look into this "get someone else to do the upgrade" thing.
14:58 bshum jeffdavis: Ask me again afterwards :)
14:58 bshum But I trust it'll go fine.
14:59 bshum And it's good building experiences
15:01 jl- virtualization++
15:01 jl- :)
15:04 Dyrcona virtualization++
15:04 Dyrcona Yep, by the time we upgrade, we've usually done it several times before on development and training VMs.
15:04 jl- nice
15:04 jl- imo VM is really all you need for unix
15:05 jl- I love my raspberry pi though
15:06 Dyrcona jl-: I disagree. For some applications, I prefer to run them on a dedicated, real machine in production.
15:08 Dyrcona VMs are awesome for testing and development, and for smaller things in production.
15:08 bshum Heh, for want of a USB memory drive, Ubuntu could not be installed on this machine :)
15:08 bshum (yet)
15:08 Dyrcona Heh, funny you mention that.....
15:09 Dyrcona I spent some of my "in-between" time today trying to figure out how to make a bootable USB stick more or less from scratch.
15:11 bshum Yeah that's been a challenge from time to time.
15:11 * bshum thinks back to his visit with gsams once upon an age
15:11 Dyrcona Well, the easiest thing on Ubuntu is to use startup disk creator.
15:12 gsams bshum: good times that was
15:12 Dyrcona But that supposes you have a bootable ISO.
15:13 jl- Dyrcona: I don't see any advantages on a real machine.. VSphere is so nice
15:14 jl- I wonder if I could run EG on my pi
15:14 jl- 512 ram might be streching it ;)
15:19 Dyrcona jl-: Last time I tried, 2GB wasn't enough any more, unless you had next to 0 data, and limited things so it was not really usable.
15:19 jl- that might call for clustering then
15:20 bshum jl-: It wasn't too long ago that there was a joke around #code4lib about getting Evergreen working on a Raspberry Pi.
15:20 bshum Would make a great presentation.
15:20 jl- indeed
15:20 Dyrcona Good luck with that. :)
15:20 jl- overclocking is also very easy
15:22 * Dyrcona returns to figuring out how to make Firefox and Thunderbird use en-US instead of (apparently) en-GB for spell checking.
15:22 jl- rubbish
15:22 * Dyrcona blames it on the Ubuntu 14.04 upgrade.
15:23 jl- I learned en-GB in school
15:24 jl- had a few awkward situations for example when I asked for a rubber (eraser)
15:25 Dyrcona Oh. I guess Thunderbird was anticipating me... It's language is set to en-AU.
15:25 Dyrcona I learned en-US in school and en-GB from fantasy novels. :)
15:26 jl- good stuff
15:26 Dyrcona I still have a tendency to type grey instead of gray. :)
15:26 jl- joe abercrombie?
15:26 jl- or colour
15:26 jl- that's also canadian
15:26 Dyrcona I recall seeing this on the Internet: I prefer honour with the u in it, because it seems to be missing these days.
15:26 jl- hehe
15:27 Dyrcona Tolkien, Moorcock, others...
15:27 jl- I like the new generation of GB scifi
15:28 Dyrcona I haven't kept up with fiction much lately.
15:28 * Dyrcona is ashamed.
15:28 jl- I recommend abercrombie if you plan to catch up, pretty much sky-rocketed the last 3 years
15:28 jl- there's a 5 book series
15:29 jl- british humour is the best
15:30 Dyrcona jl-: Is there any other kind? ;)
15:31 gmcharlt no; we're a deadly serious bunch on this side of the Pond ;)
15:31 jl- hehe
15:35 Dyrcona ;)

15:49 pinesol_green csharp: You probably want hard-boiled eggs.
15:51 Dyrcona Heh. Dylan never gets old. ;)
15:56 gsams Is there any reason why I could have ADMIN_TRIGGER_EVENT_DEF and not be able to edit event definitions?
15:58 csharp gsams: tail the logs as you try and see if there's another perm being checked
15:58 csharp maybe an UPDATE_ perm
15:59 gsams that's actually the wierd thing.  All of the Trigger permissions are applied.
15:59 gsams I should check the logs regardless though
16:01 csharp gsams: you might also be hitting a DB-level constraint, so check the PG logs too
16:01 * csharp wishes those errors were handled higher up and shown to the end user
16:04 * jeff would support efforts toward that end
16:05 csharp I need to start working small development projects into my day so I can affect the change I want to see ;-)
16:05 * bshum wants more minions.

16:12 berick heh, zoia muscle memory
16:15 gsams csharp: as far as I can see everything seems to  be working.  My current predicament tells me otherwise though.
16:15 gsams postgres isn't throwing any issues related to the permissions, and as far as I can tell it is returning both ADMIN_TRIGGER and UPDATE_TRIGGER at the same time
16:18 gsams maybe it's just the test server...
16:18 jeff berick: i was intentionally incrementing zoia for having @decide, where pinesol_green does not. ;-)
16:19 bshum It probably could.
16:19 berick jeff: ohh, missed that
16:21 bshum Yeah it's part of the original Assorted plugin, which we've only adapted bits and pieces of over time.
16:21 gsams it is the test server
16:22 gsams something isn't configured correctly I guess...
16:47 bshum So has anyone ever seen this before, where Linux reads off the network device as "em1", "em2", etc. and not "eth0", "eth1"
16:47 bshum It's kind of freaking me out, but nothing seems quite right with it other than the name.
16:47 berick i've seen all manner of names
