08:01 bshum Sigh, "top_of_queue" sucks.
08:01 bshum Holds suck too, but this especially is getting annoying now.
08:02 csharp bshum: what's going on?
08:02 bshum csharp: I was just remembering what was discussed at a meeting with library staff a few days ago
08:02 bshum They've been putting all sorts of things at "top of queue" for holds
08:02 csharp eeww
08:02 bshum And wondering why holds didn't fill as expected :)
08:03 bshum Does it go by the latest one we put on top?
08:03 bshum etc.
08:03 bshum And I'm like, no, it just flags them as more important than the rest and still fills by other factors at that point
08:03 bshum So if you all fight for marking holds top of queue, it is meaningless
08:03 csharp and it potentially screws everyone else ;-)
08:03 bshum Also, they shouldn't use it
08:03 bshum :)
08:04 bshum Indeed.
08:04 bshum Now of course I want to find a way of making that option disappear
08:04 bshum And then doing some mass update to the holds to flip the flag off
08:05 bshum But I'll shout at the sky anyways.  Darn holds madness.
08:05 bshum That and hiding the so-called "holds queue".  Which is a damned lie.
08:06 csharp oh yeah - we hid that the second it became visible
08:06 csharp seems like that would only work in a reasonably expected way with FIFO enabled
08:07 bshum Indeed.
08:07 bshum Or you know... single library :)

09:36 asimon Our Evergreen 2.4.6 system has stopped processing holds and gives the following error: 2014-04-17 08:50:10 tcmc-brick01-head osrf_http_translator: [error] [client 192.100.94.241] Global $r object is not available. Set:\n\tPerlOptions +GlobalRequest\nin httpd.conf at /usr/share/perl/5.14/CGI.pm line 367.\n.  What does this error mean?
09:37 asimon Line 267 is:       $self->r(Apache2::RequestUtil->request) unless $self->r;
09:38 asimon Sorry, that should be: Line 367 is:       $self->r(Apache2::RequestUtil->request) unless $self->r;
09:43 Dyrcona asimon: Have you tried googling the error?
09:43 asimon Dyrcona: Yes, but there is nothing related to open-ils or evergreen
09:44 Dyrcona asimon: It's probably not an Evergreen problem. It looks more like a Perl or CGI.pm problem from the message.
09:44 Dyrcona Or maybe an Apache problem.
09:45 asimon Dyrcona:  I do not see any other error messages in the logs that could pertain to the problem.
09:45 mllewellyn joined #evergreen
09:46 Dyrcona asimon: The latter doesn't matter. Sometimes you only get the 1 error. I'd try some of the solutions or look into the things mentioned in the google results. You might find something that way.
09:46 asimon Dyrcona:I'll check.  Thanks.
09:49 Dyrcona It may end up being an Evergreen problem, but it looks more general than that.

10:03 Dyrcona So, I added a book to the catalog yesterday and it won't turn up when I do a local catalog search via z39.50.
10:03 Dyrcona If I do a regular search for the ISBN in the catalog, it turns up.
10:03 Dyrcona What do I need to fix so that the book shows up via ISBN in z39.50?

10:36 bshum RDA--
10:36 bshum For example, from our system:  http://acorn.biblio.org/eg/opac/record/2993639
10:37 bshum Where one of the entries is:
10:37 bshum =264 \1$a[Place of publication not identified] :$b[Publisher not identified],$c[2014]
10:37 bshum "not identified" Great....
10:38 bshum But of course, the next line has the distributor
10:38 bshum But no date
10:38 rfrasur joined #evergreen
10:38 bshum =264 \2$aLos Angeles, CA :$bWalt Disney Studios Home Entertainment
10:38 bshum Sigh, cataloging is such a fickle thing
10:41 csharp bshum: I don't know enough to tell... is that poor cataloging or is it the way RDA needs to be?
10:41 dbs bshum: no, no, it's much more granular information, isn't it great?

10:43 eeevil there's a joke about "machine readable" in there somewhere, but I'm too depressed to find it

10:47 bshum csharp: I think it's a bit of both
10:47 csharp bshum: yowza
10:47 bshum According to my catalogers, they tell me the OCLC version of the bib has been updated to have actual name entries
10:47 bshum But apparently the date can sometimes be omitted
10:48 bshum And only on one of the various 264's
10:48 bshum And I'm not sure if that's spec or just bad cataloging again
10:49 dbs that's spec
10:49 dbs quite often the date is hanging off on its own in a 264 \4 $c
10:50 bshum Oy
10:50 bshum Then that's fun
10:50 dbs (well, the copyright date. And quite often it has a cute Unicode copyright symbol prepended to it)
10:51 Dyrcona yep, that's I used html_entities or something on the field.
10:51 Dyrcona why.
10:51 Dyrcona I can't type today.
10:51 Dyrcona omissions.....
10:51 dbs Arguably, a publisher publishes a certain edition at a point in time, so 264 \1 gets a date; but a distributor distributes over a span of time, so no date makes sense; and copyright happens at a date that might be different than publication
10:52 dbs Still, I look forward to the great linked-data-at-the-core-of-Evergreen future

11:12 shart290 if anyone has some time I am facing what I hope to be the last hurdle to getting this Card Catalog Server up and running. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
11:12 shart290 http://paste.evergreen-ils.org/61
11:15 Dyrcona shart290: You missed a step. You need to configure database settings in your opensrf configuration files. Other than stating that, I'm too busy to help.
11:15 shart290 Maybe I missed that step but I have been looking for how to do that and I havent found anything.
11:16 shart290 I've been looking for how to do that on the website. Combed the installation steps and have not found anything overtly covering the database configuration other than eg_db_configure and I have run that twice now.
11:20 shart290 can someone point me to a configuration xml example that has the database settings in it? Perhaps I can manually enter that information into the files.
11:22 csharp shart290: alternatively, if you can scrub your opensrf.xml file of anything you don't want to show the world and pastebin that, someone may be able to see a problem
11:22 csharp shart290: you might add your (also scrubbed) opensrf_core.xml too
11:23 shart290 ok, lemme do that. It's an internal catalog anyhow. I'm not too concerned about information.

12:23 csharp okay - I asked about this a little a few days ago without a response, but I've learned a little more and think I know what I need... the default PO JEDI tt2 template in the A/T definition only factors in ISBNs and we'd like it to use whichever identifier (ISBN, UPC, ISSN) is chosen from the lineitem screen
12:23 shart290 I don't see anything off hand, but things are a little unfamiliar so I am not quite sure what I am looking at.
12:23 csharp does anyone have already-created TT2 code that I could crib from?
12:25 csharp shart290: so the usernames/passwords you registered with ejabberd match the usernames passwords for opensrf/router in opensrf_core.xml?
12:25 shart290 they do, unless something got overwritten.
12:29 shart290 everything checks out.
12:29 shart290 is there a way to unregister and re-register the usernames and passwords with jabber?
12:48 jeff shart290: i believe ejabberdctl has options for both of those things.
12:49 tsbere shart290: You can also just force-set passwords for existing users
13:03 shart290 I got the users removed and updated. refreshed my config files to make sure that user names, passwords, and directories were correct.

13:08 phasefx as root, cpan Business::CreditCard::Object
13:08 shart290 not sure I really want to have to go back through everything again.
13:08 phasefx but if that got missed somehow, it's likely others got missed to, and you may be playing whack-a-mole.  You can run the Makefile.install step again without having to redo everything else
13:09 shart290 ok
13:09 shart290 and thats with opensrf or evergreen?

14:10 RoganH I'd like to see it adjusted to include Chauncey's feedback but I'm glad to see up moving forward with it.
14:11 graced RoganH: You mean that those are examples not an exhaustive list?
14:11 bbqben ok, so with montgoc1 suggested amendment I'll call a vote here in a moment unless there are other amendments

14:24 bbqben #info Resource allocator summit next steps
14:24 bbqben realizing that sborger should actually be doing that piece.
14:25 bbqben #topic Resource Allocator summit next steps
14:26 bbqben As I suggested by email -  hoping we can discuss which of our actions is/are the top priority, following which perhaps we can call for volunteers to get started.
14:27 bbqben for reference: http://libmail.georgialibraries.org/pipermail/open-ils-general/2014-March/009713.html
14:28 bshum As a suggestion
14:29 bbqben of the 6 bullet action items at bottom it seems to that focusing on the establishment of an emergency fund for the EG project encapsulates most if not all of the other items
14:30 kmlussier bbqben: Would establishing an emergency fund include exploring methods for getting money into that funds? Whether those methods be grants, membership fees, etc.
14:31 bbqben kmlussier: exactly, and what fees may apply etc
14:31 graced kmlussier: And should we explore the revenue allocation to the SFC before we build the funds?
14:31 montgoc1 graced: I think we should.
14:31 graced This is a very chicken/egg set of action items. :)
14:32 bshum I was going to suggest what graced says, that we need to look at what we're allocating to the SFC before we get too far in the process.
14:32 bbqben graced: right, so discussing the ins and outs before actually establishing anything
14:32 RoganH the allocation to the SFC derails the conversation every time it comes up so I think it should be dealt with
14:33 graced Should we lump in the environmental scan of other initiatives along with reviewing our SFC allocation?  It might be beneficial to do those at the same time.
14:34 _bott_ joined #evergreen
14:34 bbqben so perhaps starting with the question for SFC "We are considering establishing an emergency fund for the project - what do we need to know; what examples can you point us to etc?"
14:34 kmlussier Would that environmental scan be limited to initiatives that are part of the SFC or could we look at other open source initiatives?
14:34 graced I'm open to expanding it.
14:35 RoganH +1 to expanding it
14:35 kmlussier I agree.
14:36 bbqben Great! So, volunteers to (a) draft a terms of reference for the investigation into establishing an emergency fund, and (b) start investigating?
14:37 kmlussier Well, since I'm the SFC rep, I guess I should volunteer.
14:37 bbqben kmlussier: +1 I'll join you
14:38 bshum I'd be interested to assist too.  Since I'm curious about what other SFC projects do in this area.
14:38 bbqben bhsum +1

14:41 gmcharlt bshum: dbs had used it back in the day, but I think it's just the two of us
14:41 gmcharlt I'm happy to give a little presentation on it

14:45 kmlussier dbwells usually introduces himself at the beginning of the meeting. He might not be around.
14:46 dbwells Sorry, not *really* around, but can speak a little.  2.6 is cut.
14:46 bbqben kmlussier: 10-4 - we'll watch for updates on the list

14:48 bbqben oops
14:48 bbqben #topic Evergreen 2014 Conference Committee Report
14:48 bbqben kmlussier: are you recovered?
14:48 kmlussier Yes, I have!
14:49 kmlussier I believe all of the invoices are in, and we should be able to close out the books on the conference over the next month.
14:49 kmlussier We did receive a concession for the construction noise. Our fees for not reaching room attrition we waived.
14:49 kmlussier Sorry, were waived.
14:49 kmlussier And the survey results were positive. Overall, it was a good conference.
14:50 kmlussier That is all.
14:50 bbqben kmlussier ++ thanks to the entire crew
14:50 graced kmlussier++  It was a great conference.
14:50 gmcharlt kmlussier++
14:50 montgoc1 kmlussier++ I have heard nothing but positive comments about the conference.
14:50 kmlussier Thanks all!
14:51 bbqben #topic Evergreen 2015 Conference Site Selection status
14:51 bbqben graced: are you able to provide an update?
14:51 graced We received a wonderful proposal and we are finalizing some details with the site's representative now.
14:51 graced Amy Terlaga will likely be sending out the confirmation within  a few days.
14:51 bbqben graced: wahoo!
14:51 graced I won't steal her thunder.  :)
14:52 bbqben mystery, intrigue and thunder - excellent!
14:52 bbqben #topic Standing Conference Planning Committee proposal
14:53 bbqben kmlussier: you have the floor
14:53 kmlussier This came out of our post mortem discussion for the conference.
14:53 kmlussier Throughout the planning phase, I had been thinking it would be very useful if we had a standing conference committee so that local people aren't reinventing the wheel every year.
14:54 kmlussier So I just wanted to float that idea by the EOB. I was thinking it could a committee that includes some reps who have planned previous conferences as well as some local reps.
14:54 graced I agree with the idea wholeheartedly.
14:54 kmlussier There are a few other people here who have planned past conferences, so I'm curious to hear if they think it's a good idea.
14:55 bbqben kmlussier++
14:56 kmlussier I hadn't really thought further as to what the structure would be.
14:57 bbqben kmlussier: want to think on that for the next meeting?
14:57 kmlussier I can do that. I'll pull together something that's ready for a vote.
14:58 bbqben #action kmlussier to draft Standing Conference Planning Committee proposal
14:58 bbqben folks, I killed some time earlier - with apologies - shall we press on through items 9 and 10 or bring them forward to another day?
14:59 montgoc1 Pressing on is fine with me.
14:59 graced pressing on is okay for me
15:00 kmlussier Either way. The photography thing isn't time critical.
15:01 bbqben ok, let's roll through 9 and 10 (no later than 15 after the hour then)
15:01 bbqben #action Conference photography policy proposal
15:01 bbqben omg
15:02 bbqben #topic Conference photography policy proposal
15:02 kmlussier This idea actually came from bshum. We had a volunteer taking pictures at this year's conference, and it made me realize we needed a better method for opt-in opt-out in place.
15:02 kmlussier We did have a couple of people who did not want to be photographed, but it's really hard to identify them.
15:03 kmlussier #link https://adainitiative.org/2013/07/another-way-to-attract-women-to-conferences-photography-policies/
15:03 kmlussier I thought the policy mentioned in the above link offered a good approach.
15:03 kmlussier If others like the idea, I would be willing to work with bshum to draft something up.
15:04 abneiman If it's not too hard, I like the idea of color-coding lanyards -- it's an easy visual
15:04 bshum I saw it in practice when I went to the Google Summer of Code Mentor summit.  I picked green, fwiw.
15:04 montgoc1 zypper search
15:04 bbqben bshum: love the colour palette of your mind ;)
15:04 montgoc1 Oops.
15:04 montgoc1 Sorry about that.
15:05 graced +1 to the colored lanyards - I think it's a good policy.  The lanyards are a very visible indicator.
15:05 montgoc1 I like the lanyard approach.  Easy to spot.
15:06 bbqben #action kmlussier and bshum to draft a photography policy with inclusion of coloured layards
15:06 bbqben #topic Reinstating community IRC meetings
15:07 bbqben kmlussier: over to you
15:08 bshum A note about community meetings (as someone who ran a few in the old days); I like the idea of them, but I would like to encourage that we use them for more discussion topic and space them out well.
15:09 bshum One of the reasons I think it didn't work out in the long run was that it was basically a really long time for people to paste paragraphs about their various committees.
15:09 bshum Which isn't bad, but I feel there's other ways of disseminating information.
15:09 kmlussier Yes, I concur with what bshum said. There was a lot of discussion in the early meetings, but then they were just committee reports.
15:10 kmlussier Still I think there is value in trying to get the community together on a regular basis between conferences.
15:10 bshum kmlussier's suggestion of quarterly sounded nice though.  And maybe we should do topic themes maybe?
15:11 kmlussier bshum: Do you have any good topics in mind?
15:11 bshum kmlussier: Not off the top of my head.  I have a bunch of other dev things to juggle :)
15:12 jl- I'm curious why  \i auth_concerto.sql
15:12 montgoc1 Were past meetings directed by the EOB?
15:12 jl- in load_concerto.sql does not create an import table, but directly dumps it into authority.record_entry
15:12 kmlussier Sure, I think topics are good, but I also think it's good to have places where the community can hear updates on what we're exploring for the community funding or, if the web team has done something new and interesting, to show it to the community.
15:13 jl- vs. bibs_concerto.sql
15:13 kmlussier montgoc1: No, they were mostly organized by bshum.
15:13 kmlussier But I brought it up with the EOB last year because I thought it fit with our efforts to outreach more to the community.
15:13 kmlussier jl-: We have a meeting going on right now, but we should be finishing up in just a minute.
15:14 jl- sure, sry
15:14 montgoc1 I see these meetings as a way for the broader community to not only get informed but also provide feedback -- depending on participation.
15:14 bbqben conscious of time, propose that we comeback to this topic at the next meeting if thats ok
15:15 kmlussier That's fine with me. In the meantime, maybe we can think a bit about what we might want to see happen at a community meeting.
15:16 bbqben #action all - think on community IRC meetings vis a vis board strategy

15:36 shart290 is the meeting over?
15:37 phasefx shart290: yeap
15:38 phasefx shart290: osrf_control --help
15:38 shart290 right, got that
15:39 phasefx hrmm, I'm not sure how to just start the router either looking at that :D
15:39 shart290 I used --router-re-register-all and got no output whatsoever
15:40 shart290 so I am checking error logging settings because I don't think I ever changed them back from level 4 when I tried the last time.
15:40 phasefx --start --service router
15:41 shart290 ok
15:48 shart290 ugh
15:48 shart290 system partition was only 10gb and somehow it's full already
15:49 shart290 the --start --service router ran without complaint
15:49 phasefx if you get that squared away, and --service router produces no errors in the logs, next step would be --start-services for the rest of it (looks like we don't have an equivalent to start_perl and start_c anymore)
15:50 phasefx I would check the logs though, and not rely on no error showing up at the command line

16:08 kmlussier ktomita: If you have any questions, you might want to send a message to the list. I'm sure they would be willing to describe how they are doing it.
16:08 ktomita kmlussier: great idea
16:09 bshum @later tell krvmga Irony, at the meeting I was at today, people were telling me how they *want* a link that switches search from KPAC to TPAC and retains search terms, etc. between searches so that kids can leave the catalog and go forth without starting all over.
16:09 pinesol_green bshum: The operation succeeded.
16:09 bshum So more ways out is our goal :)
16:10 kmlussier bshum++
16:11 bshum kmlussier: Well they made a good case.  For the kids in 4th/5th grade, they wanted to make it easier for kids to break out and start learning to use the "adult catalog" (sorry, it cracks me up every time)
16:13 bshum shart290: That short log snippet makes me wonder why it's still trying to write to LOCALSTATEDIR and not whatever the configured path ought to have been.
16:13 bshum shart290: It seems to me that something is awry with the opensrf.xml config file and that maybe not everything has been configured properly on the machine.
16:15 shart290 I will check again but I swear i've done this 3 times already
16:16 Dyrcona LOCALSTATEDIR gets replaced after configure and during make with the appropriate value based on your configure options.

16:16 shart290 and I made sure that I did that last time.
16:17 jeff it's worth noting that the error lines from that log file span a time interval of several hours. the earliest entries are quite possibly no longer relevant.

16:27 jeff can you pastebin your opensrf_core.xml file, removing any passwords as needed?
16:27 shart290 http://paste.evergreen-ils.org/66
16:28 jeff shart290: that looks like your opensrf.xml file, not the opensrf_core.xml file.
16:28 shart290 oh, core...ok

16:30 bshum I didn't know there was a loglevel 5?
16:30 shart290 I was reading the docs
16:31 bshum Nifty
16:31 shart290 1-5 then 100 or something
16:31 shart290 figured if 4 was handy 5 would be better

16:40 Dyrcona It will fill your drive in a heartbeat or two in production. :)

16:40 Dyrcona I have on a dev server.
16:40 Dyrcona Ran out of disk space over a weekend when nothing really was going on.
16:42 shart290 no, I reduced it to 4 before proceeding. disk space was definitely becoming an issue
16:43 pastebot "shart290" at 64.57.241.14 pasted "errors" (5944 lines) at http://paste.evergreen-ils.org/67
16:43 shart290 and thats osrfsys.log
16:43 shart290 used grep \\[ERR ./*.log > err.txt
16:43 Dyrcona Well, your services can't talk to your database.
16:44 shart290 if I run eg_db_configure again with all parameters, since I am dealing with an empty database will that help?
16:44 jeff DBI connections are getting "connection refused" and XMPP connections are getting "connection refused". interesting.
16:45 bshum Wacky firewall?
16:45 shart290 it's all local
16:45 * bshum has done that to himself on Ubuntu before
16:45 Dyrcona postgres probably needs to the localhost allowed.
16:45 jeff my next step is usually "lsof -n -i | grep LISTEN" -- you might need to install lsof with something like "aptitude lsof" or "apt-get install lsof"
16:45 shart290 fresh install of Debian 7
16:45 Dyrcona in whatever file that is
16:46 shart290 no output for the lsof command
16:46 mdriscoll1 left #evergreen
16:47 jeff that's quite unusual.
16:47 shart290 would I do lsof -n -i | grep unix?
16:47 bshum Run it as the root user
16:48 bshum Or put sudo in front of it
16:48 jeff shart290: no, you'd do grep LISTEN
16:48 jeff and yes, you'll want to be running lsof as root -- sorry
16:48 shart290 ok, sudo got somethign
16:48 bshum :)
16:48 jeff bshum++
16:48 shart290 quite a bit of something

16:51 jeff shart290: please use paste.evergreen-ils.org -- large pastes directly to channel end up being rate limited at one line per second.
16:51 bshum Or any of the other pastes you've been using would be fine too
16:51 jeff shart290: also, the additional "grep opensrf" has made the output useless -- can you run the original "lsof -n -i | grep LISTEN" command and paste its output to paste.evergreen-ils.org?
16:52 pastebot "shart290" at 64.57.241.14 pasted "lsof output" (186 lines) at http://paste.evergreen-ils.org/68
16:52 jeff (yes, paste.evergreen-ils.org is just one useful example that doesn't have annoying video ads featuring "shocking" double entendres)
16:53 bshum No 5432 anywhere
16:53 bshum Hmm
16:53 jeff bshum: xmpp-client and xmpp-server
16:53 bshum Oh I'm not thinking with my head;  sorry was thinking about postgres
16:55 jeff the /etc/hosts file appears correct, the opensrf_core.xml file seems to list the correct ejabberd domains, yet the errors were "connection refused" for xmpp.

16:55 Dyrcona paste.lisp.org doesn't have ads either.
16:55 jeff but bshum raises a good point -- postgresql does not appear to be listening on any port.
16:55 shart290 allow/enable on localhost?
16:55 bshum What does ejabberd's config look like?

16:58 jeff shart290: when you issue this command, do you get some XML back containing xml-not-well-formed? echo foo | nc localhost 5222
16:59 jeff and if that works, do you get a similar thing when you do "echo foo | nc private.localhost 5222" and "echo foo | nc public.localhost 5222"?
16:59 shart290 not well formed
17:00 shart290 all of them are pointing to exactly what you are saying
17:00 shart290 not well formed blah blah blah

17:01 pastebot "shart290" at 64.57.241.14 pasted "echo foo | nc localhost 5222" (5 lines) at http://paste.evergreen-ils.org/70
17:02 jeff all of that is as expected. good, i think.
17:03 jeff shart290: i'd look into why postgresql doesn't appear to be listening. try starting it via the standard means, like /etc/init.d/postgresql start
17:03 jeff or service postgresql start
17:03 jeff depending, you may have a version number in the service name.
17:04 bshum In the meantime, I'd stop all the openils services.  So that you don't clog up your server while you look at postgresql
17:04 shart290 seems like that might have been it lsof shows postgres listening.
17:05 pastebot "shart290" at 64.57.241.14 pasted "postgrs start" (37 lines) at http://paste.evergreen-ils.org/71
