09:37 * rfrasur likes the beginning way better.
09:37 * rfrasur will buy ALL the books in January.

10:51 Dyrcona OMG! One of our assistant directors just mentioned how he used a Raspberry Pi to power a TV with presentations of services, etc., that the library offers.
10:53 rfrasur Because he's awesome.  I think we might need to talk.
10:54 dbs Dyrcona: cool! That was one of the suggestions I made this spring for refurbing our library display (right now it's running LCDS - a custom linux image I built, on a broken laptop)
10:54 rfrasur I haven't had time to play except for a couple minutes messing with Raspbian one day.
10:54 dbs LCDS = https://gitorious.org/el-cheapo-digital-signage
10:56 rfrasur dbs: I think that could be one of the best lib uses for a Pi, but I don't have the time or know how to do it yet.
10:56 dbs Should be super-simple to replace that with an rPI that, on boot, uses a minimal xinitrc to fire up a web browser that points at the constructed LCDS web page
10:56 Dyrcona dbs: Sounds like pretty much the same problem: use wireless 'cause who want to climb a ladder and possibly break their neck.
10:58 dbs heh, biggest problem there was the ladder was far away, so people were climbing on rolling chairs and other much more hazardous objects

11:04 RobertL_ Hi. Is there a way for different users to share an import queue? I know you can share buckets but it seems import queues are not shareable.
11:10 bshum RobertL_: I feel like queues are owned by their users and not sharable.  But someone else might know of other options.
11:12 kmlussier RobertL_: I think bshum is correct. I know there are people here who would like the queues to be sharable.
11:13 RobertL_ That was my guess. Thanks for confirming!
11:52 bshum I'm not sure if this is a Ubuntu Precise thing, but nowadays every time we install Evergreen, it chokes on trying to restart apache because of /var/lock/apache2 directory being owned by www-data instead of opensrf
11:53 bshum We have to either remove that dir or change the ownerships to make it work.
11:53 graced_ joined #evergreen
11:53 bshum Has anyone seen anything like that on Debian Wheezy or is it just a Ubuntu Precise issue?
11:56 paxed i don't think i've encountered that on debian - i run testing.
11:57 bshum So maybe it's just a weird Ubuntu issue
11:57 dbs bshum: at some point we'll cut over to running Apache as apache / www-data instead of opensrf, and then such errors will go away
11:57 bshum dbs: True that
11:58 jeffdavis bshum: we do 'chown -R opensrf:opensrf /var/lock/apache2' to avoid that issue IIRC
11:59 jeffdavis in our install script
11:59 bshum jeffdavis: Sounds about right.
12:00 bshum I'll not overly worry I guess, but it does fumble newbies playing with Evergreen on Ubuntu.
12:00 Dyrcona bshum: It happens on first install.
12:00 Dyrcona I make it part of my scripts to do the chown.
12:01 dbs We really should set a firm release target for cutting over to a normalized install instead of /openils + opensrf:opensrf.
12:01 bshum dbs: Sounds like a worthy decision to be made for 2.next or 3.0!  :D
12:03 bshum dbs: Or maybe something to include in your pitch when you run for RM?
12:03 bshum Speaking of which, we probably need to get a meeting going to decide who that is and what our next plans are.  Sometime.

12:16 kmlussier bshum: My calendar was reminding me this morning to schedule a dev meeting. :)
12:31 Dyrcona Gee. Maybe I should have piped the output of authority_authority_linker to a file. Then, I'd have a list of my problems, rather than just the handful that show up in scroll back.....
12:31 bshum Dyrcona: Oops :(
12:34 Dyrcona I'll do that next time. This is development, there will be a next time.
12:39 rfrasur o0(one should not use canned air in an enclosed air for more than small bursts)
12:43 Dyrcona rfrasur: Like the mildew remover that says not to use it in a confined space?
12:47 rfrasur Dyrcona: Well, there's the warnings and all that...but who reads these days?
12:48 rfrasur Yeah, it says well ventilated area...oh well.  My keyboard is pretty dang clean now and that's all that matters.
12:51 * dbs just bangs the can against the keyboard until all the dust comes out
12:51 rfrasur dbs: I did that, too.  Anything to avoid the tediousness of writing the details of the library long range plan.
12:51 * rfrasur is thinking about rearranging her office.

13:15 csharp ah yes... the moment when you're 95% done with a reports template, only to realize that one of the requested fields is not avaialble via your chosen source...
13:15 kmlussier Can anybody else confirm this? In testing offline circ in 2.4, we found that the "Skip offline checkout if newer item status changed time" was backwards. When set to false, it skipped the offline checkout. When set to true, it did not skip the offline checkout.
13:18 jcamins rfrasur: does your library provide online access to JSTOR?
13:19 rfrasur no
13:19 rfrasur And it's not available through our statewide db list either.
13:20 jcamins I just learned that signing up for JSTOR is easier than figuring out how to access JSTOR through the library.
13:20 * jcamins thinks this might be why libraries are in trouble.
13:21 rfrasur oh yeah.  I dunno any public libraries around here that use it.  Indiana University does...or did.
13:22 rfrasur Honestly, most of our small libraries don't bother with most of the major db unless it's genealogy or the something cute from Ebsco because negotiating the licenses and dealing with authentication is a nightmare (even if you can afford it).
13:22 csharp no public libraries in Georgia use it that I'm aware of
13:22 jcamins All I wanted was a basic biography of a poet. I found it via EBSCO+JSTOR personal (which I signed up for in the last ten minutes), after spending time failing to figure out how to find a biography from any library that I use.
13:22 rfrasur And our statewide db library, Inspire, is a pile of pants because of the authentication hassles.
13:23 jcamins Granted, he's an obscure poet. But still.
13:23 rfrasur still
13:23 jcamins When someone says "Wikipedia isn't enough for me," the library should be right there to say "damn straight, and here's good information for you!"
13:23 rfrasur the information exists and we can view it from afar...but it's behind so many flippin' walls, it's essentially extinct for all intents and purposes.
13:24 rfrasur yep, we should.
13:24 csharp rfrasur: dunno what the relationships are, but we have seamless access between PINES and GALILEO (which I believe would be somewhat analogous to Inspire)
13:24 csharp you might request a similar feature?
13:24 rfrasur csharp: I think it's the same idea.  As far as requesting goes....it's become a mild shout throughout the state.
13:25 csharp gotcha
13:25 csharp if we can help at all, just let us know
13:25 rfrasur I dunno why it can't get figured out.  God forbid someone from Ohio accidentally access any of our tax funded stuff.
13:25 csharp and the GALILEO folks are very nice and helpful too
13:26 rfrasur I think our Inspire people, who are state library people, are, like just about everything at the state library, overworked, underpaid, and essentially told to make all the things work all the time or else.
13:26 csharp funny how everyone re-invents their own wheels around all that stuff
13:26 Dyrcona Digital information is free, once it is created and stored in a digital format. Rent seeking gatekeepers hate that.
13:27 rfrasur Dyrcona: and an unfortunate part of being part of the system is that I feel obligated to play by the rules.
13:27 jcamins Dyrcona: but having used JSTOR personal, I might get a personal JSTOR account and call it a business expense.
13:27 jcamins 'Cause it's that much better than EZProxy.
13:28 rfrasur jcamins: that's what INspire used to use.  I'm not sure if they still do.
13:28 jcamins Probably. EZProxy makes me want to kill someone.
13:28 * Dyrcona seems to recall having said something about library software sucking because library standards suck....Oh that was in #koha!
13:29 rfrasur Well, library standards do suck...but that doesn't mean that libraries have to.  Just means that librarians have to actually use their brains instead of relying on someone else to tell them what to do.
13:29 jcamins rfrasur++ # exactly!
13:30 * rfrasur has MANY other things to say about certain things but doesn't want people to think that she's ticked at them rather than the institutions that make her consider anarchy from time to time.
13:30 rfrasur jcamins:what's your poets name?
13:31 rfrasur s/poets/poet's
13:31 Dyrcona Anarchy rules!!!
13:31 Dyrcona ;)
13:31 rfrasur Dyrcona++ #because even people that don't need karma deserve it sometimes
13:31 jcamins He went by Bozhidar, but his actual name was Bogdan Petrovich Gordeev.
13:31 jcamins I found a great biography in JSTOR. :)
13:33 jcamins It's by Janacek, too, which makes it doubly excellent.
13:33 * rfrasur is testing INspire (and all it's Ebsco heavy awesomeness. *cough)
13:35 rfrasur well, I found a record, but can't view it because apparently the library doesn't have enough permission to access statewide database stuff.
13:36 csharp @blame walled gardens
13:36 pinesol_green csharp: walled gardens musta been an Apple employee.
13:36 kmlussier Massachusetts uses geolocation to authenticate to statewide databases, which is pretty cool. We don't have JSTOR, though.
13:36 csharp pinesol_green: truedat
13:36 pinesol_green csharp: Try restarting apache.
13:37 kmlussier Of course, the geolocation never works for me because I live on the state line. Thinks I'm in RI. :(
13:37 csharp GALILEO uses a similar location feature
13:37 rfrasur kmlussier: that'd be helpful here for sure, actually considering many rural places rely on wireless internet (the kind with the antenna on the roof) and on the state line, it's hard telling where the signal is coming from.
13:39 * rfrasur is now sufficiently ticked about having INspire not work IN the library.  (No wonder the state wants to defund it)
13:40 jcamins Aaaarrrrggghhh!!!! Stanford uses Worldcat Local.
13:41 * jcamins is having a bad day, research-wise.
13:42 rfrasur Hmm, library catalogs are ugly.  in general.
13:42 jcamins Yeah, but Worldcat Local doesn't include local notes like "Photocopy. Not an actual book." And the good news is that Stanford also has a real catalog.
13:43 rfrasur what do you mean by real catalog?
13:43 * rfrasur is looking at Yale's Ex Libris implementation.
13:43 jcamins Sorry, y'all can go back to talking about Evergreen. I just wanted to ask a public librarian about JSTOR, and rfrasur was the first who came to mind.
13:44 jcamins rfrasur: one with actual local records displayed. I'm not too picky by now. They have a Vufind installation.
13:44 rfrasur ah, gotcha
13:44 * rfrasur goes back to writing more action items for long range plan.

14:40 rfrasur well played Amazon/Disney, well played.  Only putting up listings for Blu-Ray/DVD/Digital pack for early preorders...then sneaking the DVD only version later.
14:41 * rfrasur accepts this minor defeat.
14:41 jcamins rfrasur: you don't have a blu-ray collection?
14:41 rfrasur nope.  We don't.
14:42 jcamins (full disclosure: I have never even seen a blue-ray player)
14:42 rfrasur for real?
14:42 RoganH We only have a few libraries in SCLENDS with blu ray collections.
14:42 rfrasur I think it's an inbetween technology and only a small proportion of our users own the players.
14:42 RoganH I never bought a blue ray player.  I went from DVDs to streaming.
14:43 jcamins Well, at the very least, I am unaware of ever having seen a blu-ray player.
14:43 rfrasur RoganH: exactly...and that's kinda what I'm banking on.
14:43 jcamins Unless, I suppose, they come standard on computers and I just thought I had a DVD drive.

14:43 RoganH Problem solved.
14:43 jcamins lol
14:43 rfrasur jcamins, there's that...but they don't come on the walmart laptops that most of our people are buying...not the cheap ones.
14:44 rfrasur hah, we have TWO blu-ray players and haven't played a blu-ray disc in at least a year if not longer.  We just stream through them...although the one is junk and only has netflix and pandora.
14:44 * rfrasur curses it.
14:44 jcamins rfrasur: they don't come standard on my optical drive-free laptop.
14:44 rfrasur lol, no...they don't.
