Installed updates for the Intel APU camera on Ubuntu 22.04 this morning, and my camera doesn't work. :( |

All right. We'll see if a Power Off and then turning it back on helps. (I've seen a restart not clear things out so well before.) |
10:28 |
Dyrcona |
Nope. Camera not working in Zoom... Guess I'll file a bug on Lp. (I wouldn't be surprised if upgrading to Ubuntu 24.04 fixes the camera issue. The camera not working was why I reinstalled Ubuntu 22.04 back in October.) |

It's tradition, camera's, modem's, and other "Exotic" USB things don't work (in Linux) :) |
10:29 |
Bmagic |
I blame the controller chip manufacturer |
10:30 |
Bmagic |
You didn't want it to actually work did you? |
10:30 |
Dyrcona |
Bmagic: No, they usually do just work in Linux if you don't get the latest and greatest all the time. I have honestly had fewer issues with Linux and hardware than other operating systems. That's also because I do my research. |
10:31 |
Dyrcona |
The updates for the APU Intel DPMI camera that I installed this morning are probably the problem. |
10:31 |
Bmagic |
I agree, if you research all of the exact chip hardware that ships with any given computer model, you can come out smelling a bit more rosy |
10:31 |
Dyrcona |
In this case I blame Dell mostly. |
10:32 |
Bmagic |
I'm excited for the COSMIC desktop that Pop!_OS is working on |
10:33 |
Dyrcona |
I do find that most stuff just works, though. It depends on the manufacturers following standards. I avoid a few manufacturers for the reason that I know they always do proprietary mumbo jumbo. Oftentimes, the cheap stuff from some unknown Chinese manufacturer just works. :) |
10:34 |
Dyrcona |
I dropped System76 because they use Clevo hardware, and I've found Clevo to be hit or miss. I've had to return at least 3 of the 5 or 6 Clevos I've bought over the years. I've had a couple that were just great, though. |
10:35 |

the OS is available for free though |

I'll stick with Ubuntu (on work hardware) and Arch thanks. :) |

We had a service crashe with RedisRF on our training server right after we updated, but I won't pin it on Redis because I haven't really looked into it. (I was off the day it happened and Bmagic restarted services.) |
11:01 |
Dyrcona |
That said, we occasionally had to restart services on the training system before switching from Ejabberd. |
11:04 |
Bmagic |
I suspect it's not going to fail whilst not in a container. It's a combination of being in a container and* a large volume of action triggers. I also think it's hardware related. So, I'm thinking of making this side-machine a permanant machine just for this set of action triggers |
11:05 |
Bmagic |
that said, it didn't segfault on ejabberd.... |
11:06 |
berick |
Bmagic: at the risk of muddying the waters, i have a Rust router if you want to try that on your container |
11:06 |
berick |
we're not running that in prod yet, but all my dev VMs use it |
11:07 |
Dyrcona |
berick: Is that in your rust repo on GH? |
11:07 |

if it crashes, there will be a file + line number + crash message in the kernel logs. none of this C segfault hunting madness. |
11:08 |
berick |
Dyrcona: yes |
11:08 |
Dyrcona |
I'll see about testing it on of my vms. I'll put it on the one that I plan to use with a test Aspen instance. That should give it a work out. |

Dyrcona |
I think I'll get Aspen hooked up, first, and try the Rust router later. I'm already using Redis on that vm. I still have to figure out how to hook Aspen up to Evergreen and get the indexer going. I'll probably pop into Slack to ask questions. |

11:17 |
Dyrcona |
Wait a minute... Maybe I read that update wrong and it autoremoved the drivers? |
11:22 |
Dyrcona |
I wonder if apt removed them because it thinks the camera is supported in the kernel? (That's part of the irony, really. The camera is supported since kernel 6.10 or 6.11, and if I had switched to Arch, it would have just worked, but Ubuntu 22.04 and 24.04 need drivers installed separately.) |

3.13 adds a unique constraint on config.coded_value_map (ctype, code); we have a dozen rows in ccvm that would violate that constraint. |

interesting |
18:23 |

I wonder if the purpose of the constraint is just to allow use of "INSERT ... ON CONFLICT DO UPDATE" rather than explicitly checking for existing matching values before inserting MARC tag info into ccvm. |
18:44 |
jeffdavis |
Our best guess is that we added duplicate entries during our upgrade to 2.4 so that we could have a format dropdown that included both "Books" (user-friendly) and "Language material" (cataloguer jargon) as search options. |
