09:27 Dyrcona Installed updates for the Intel APU camera on Ubuntu 22.04 this morning, and my camera doesn't work. :(
09:28 redavis Ugh
10:12 * Dyrcona will try a few things.
10:14 Dyrcona It's not working in Zoom, either....
10:16 Dyrcona Everything seems crashy this morning.
10:16 mmorgan Bad technology day :-/
10:18 sandbergja joined #evergreen
10:22 Dyrcona Looks like. I may reboot for a third (or it fourth?) time.
10:22 Dyrcona BRB.
10:25 Dyrcona joined #evergreen
10:26 Dyrcona All right. We'll see if a Power Off and then turning it back on helps. (I've seen a restart not clear things out so well before.)
10:28 Dyrcona Nope. Camera not working in Zoom... Guess I'll file a bug on Lp. (I wouldn't be surprised if upgrading to Ubuntu 24.04 fixes the camera issue. The camera not working was why I reinstalled Ubuntu 22.04 back in October.)
10:29 Bmagic It's tradition, camera's, modem's, and other "Exotic" USB things don't work (in Linux) :)
10:29 Bmagic I blame the controller chip manufacturer
10:30 Bmagic You didn't want it to actually work did you?
10:30 Dyrcona Bmagic: No, they usually do just work in Linux if you don't get the latest and greatest all the time. I have honestly had fewer issues with Linux and hardware than other operating systems. That's also because I do my research.
10:31 Dyrcona The updates for the APU Intel DPMI camera that I installed this morning are probably the problem.
10:31 Bmagic I agree, if you research all of the exact chip hardware that ships with any given computer model, you can come out smelling a bit more rosy
10:31 Dyrcona In this case I blame Dell mostly.
10:32 Bmagic I'm excited for the COSMIC desktop that Pop!_OS is working on
10:33 Dyrcona I do find that most stuff just works, though. It depends on the manufacturers following standards. I avoid a few manufacturers for the reason that I know they always do proprietary mumbo jumbo. Oftentimes, the cheap stuff from some unknown Chinese manufacturer just works. :)
10:34 Dyrcona I dropped System76 because they use Clevo hardware, and I've found Clevo to be hit or miss. I've had to return at least 3 of the 5 or 6 Clevos I've bought over the years. I've had a couple that were just great, though.
10:35 Bmagic the OS is available for free though
10:38 Dyrcona I'll stick with Ubuntu (on work hardware) and Arch thanks. :)
10:43 Dyrcona I sometimes wonder how there's a "market" for so many different Linux distributions. I guess there are plenty of geeks with plenty of free time.
10:47 csharp_ TOO MANY GEEKS... er, SECRETS
10:47 csharp_ deep cut for jeff and other Sneakers fans
10:48 Dyrcona Sneakers is probably the most accurate portrayal of hackers on film, ever.
10:48 csharp_ I have loved that movie since it came out on video
10:49 csharp_ (I don't think it screened near me when it was in the theaters)
10:49 Dyrcona Strike the "probably." It is the most accurate portrayal of hacking on film.
10:49 csharp_ Dyrcona: seen Mr. Robot yet?
10:50 Bmagic Sneakers remains one of my fav's as well. Loved the braille keyboard + hacking
10:50 Dyrcona Yes, I have.
10:50 Dyrcona I put Mr. Robot at #3: 1. Sneakers, 2. War Games, 3. Mr. Robot.
10:50 csharp_ nice
10:50 csharp_ DO YOU WANT TO PLAY A GAME?
10:51 Dyrcona Though, I think WOPR was a bit more capable in the film than it would have been in real life.
10:51 Bmagic That should be in pinesol's rolladex
10:51 Bmagic (It might be already)
10:51 Dyrcona pinesol: DO YOU WANT TO PLAY A GAME?
10:51 pinesol Dyrcona: Yeah, well, you know, that's just like uh, your opinion, man.
10:52 csharp_ Dyrcona: I hadn't seen it when I was a kid, but it appears to be Dr. Strangelove redux
10:52 csharp_ (hadn't seen Dr. Strangelove, that is)
10:52 Dyrcona Well, yes, but no. :)
10:52 Dyrcona Dr. Stragelove is one of my favorite films of all time.
10:52 csharp_ sooo good
10:52 berick +1
10:53 csharp_ @dunno add DO YOU WANT TO PLAY A GAME?
10:53 pinesol csharp_: The operation succeeded.  Dunno #90 added.
10:54 Bmagic Dyrcona++ # Dr. Stranglove, heck yeah. Mandrake! Get over here and feed me this belt.
10:54 Bmagic "Children's ice cream, Mandrake?"
10:54 csharp_ for anyone following this season of "PINES Upgrade", I've decided we're going live with RediSRF and not yet going to use SIP2 Mediator
10:54 csharp_ Bmagic++
10:55 Dyrcona There's a map in Battle for Wesnoth that is Strangelove's name in German: Merkweurdigleibe. The map notes even claim that was what Kubrick said Strangelove's name was in German.
10:55 Bmagic csharp_++
10:55 Dyrcona csharp_++
10:55 Dyrcona That's basically where we're at with our next upgrade.
10:56 csharp_ Col. Bat Guano if that is your name
10:56 Dyrcona Speaking of: I owe Bmagic a reply on that topic.
10:56 csharp_ Dyrcona++
10:56 Dyrcona "Listen, Col. Bat Guano, if that is your name...."
10:57 Dyrcona You'll have to answer to the Coca-Cola company....
10:57 berick Bmagic: whatever happened to your routers?
10:57 berick csharp_++
10:57 Dyrcona That's one of the most surreal dialogs in cinema when you consider the context.
10:57 csharp_ I actually did get to see that for the first time in a crowded theater - UGA's student center played an amazing array of films back in the day
10:57 Bmagic berick: I've checked it daily. It hasn't segfaulted again. (it's not in a container anymore)
10:57 berick csharp_: the Tate!
10:58 csharp_ now it's all digital and jealously guarded by copyright holders :-(
10:58 berick Bmagic: k, gotcha
10:58 csharp_ berick: so many good times there
10:58 Dyrcona Bmagic++
11:01 Dyrcona We had a service crashe with RedisRF on our training server right after we updated, but I won't pin it on Redis because I haven't really looked into it. (I was off the day it happened and Bmagic restarted services.)
11:01 Dyrcona That said, we occasionally had to restart services on the training system before switching from Ejabberd.
11:04 Bmagic I suspect it's not going to fail whilst not in a container. It's a combination of being in a container and* a large volume of action triggers. I also think it's hardware related. So, I'm thinking of making this side-machine a permanant machine just for this set of action triggers
11:05 Bmagic that said, it didn't segfault on ejabberd....
11:06 berick Bmagic: at the risk of muddying the waters, i have a Rust router if you want to try that on your container
11:06 berick we're not running that in prod yet, but all my dev VMs use it
11:07 Dyrcona berick: Is that in your rust repo on GH?
11:07 berick if it crashes, there will be a file + line number + crash message in the kernel logs.  none of this C segfault hunting madness.
11:08 berick Dyrcona: yes
11:08 Dyrcona I'll see about testing it on of my vms. I'll put it on the one that I plan to use with a test Aspen instance. That should give it a work out.
11:09 berick Dyrcona++
11:10 Bmagic berick++ # This is production, albeit a single cronjob forked off to it's own machine for analyzing. I'm willing to use it as a test bed to hunt down this bug. Because, IMO, the only real way to do it is on production
11:13 Dyrcona I think I'll get Aspen hooked up, first, and try the Rust router later. I'm already using Redis on that vm. I still have to figure out how to hook Aspen up to Evergreen and get the indexer going. I'll probably pop into Slack to ask questions.
11:15 * Dyrcona *mumbles* Right. Lp bug about camera not working...
11:17 Dyrcona Wait a minute... Maybe I read that update wrong and it autoremoved the drivers?
11:22 Dyrcona I wonder if apt removed them because it thinks the camera is supported in the kernel? (That's part of the irony, really. The camera is supported since kernel 6.10 or 6.11, and if I had switched to Arch, it would have just worked, but Ubuntu 22.04 and 24.04 need drivers installed separately.)
11:24 Dyrcona dpkg: error processing package intel-ipu6-dkms (--configure):
11:24 Dyrcona Grr....
11:24 Dyrcona Linux feels so much like Windows of the past these days.

11:45 Bmagic time for an external camera while the distro community does their thang
11:46 Bmagic and there's always WSL2, lol. # just razzin' ya
11:48 Dyrcona Y'know, I *might* have a really old logitech camera...in a box...somewhere...that would probably take me a couple of hours to find.
11:49 Bmagic Classic return on investment. In this case, the investment is time.
12:02 jihpringle joined #evergreen
12:04 Dyrcona It might also not be USB, and I might not have it any longer.
12:05 Bmagic I don't remember external camera's having a connection other than USB. Did they make CardBus cameras?
12:05 Dyrcona I also just installed a new TV in the living room and we deliberately did NOT get a smart TV because we didn't want a camera in it, but if ever I could have used a smart TV.....
12:06 Dyrcona It was probably USB. It might not even have been "mine." It's like over 20 years old, and I have no idea where it is.
12:06 Bmagic that old, probably won't work with current' OS's
12:07 berick you can still get dumb TVs?  (I just leave the wifi un-connected)
12:07 Dyrcona Yeah, we found one through Best Buy. It's an outdoor TV, but still looks good on our living room wall. It's small by today's standards, but big enough for the space.
12:10 Bmagic Great smart TV's comes with great responsibility. My favorite is when [Netf-Param-Disn-HBO-Peac-Appl-...] upgrades their TLS encryption and the LG app store doesn't get a coorisponding app.
12:10 Bmagic kinda like Hatch, lol
12:12 Dyrcona Heh.
12:13 Dyrcona We got new phones recently and copied the stuff over. I always have to reinstall a few apps before they work right, like the ADP payroll app
12:13 Dyrcona Doesn't technology make life so much easier? ;)
12:16 Dyrcona Actually, I was thinking about this before work this morning. The Matrix claims that 1999 was the peak of human civilization, and so far, I haven't seen anything that debunks that claim. (It shows up on meme sites alot lately, too.)
12:16 Bmagic haha, totally
12:17 Bmagic But here's the thing: I think we all took the blue pill, so, we wouldn't know
12:18 Dyrcona "There is no [pill]." There's also no escaping the Matrix.
12:26 Bmagic :)
12:33 Dyrcona Back to Evergreen: I'm trying to remember what's the setting to make URIs work more like copies. Is it a global flag or org. unit setting?
12:35 Dyrcona It's a global flag: opac.located_uri.act_as_copy

17:55 jeffdavis 3.13 adds a unique constraint on config.coded_value_map (ctype, code); we have a dozen rows in ccvm that would violate that constraint.
17:56 jeffdavis The constraint was introduced in bug 2006969
17:56 pinesol Launchpad bug 2006969 in Evergreen "wishlist: enhanced MARC editor rewrite" [Wishlist,Fix released] https://launchpad.net/bugs/2006969
17:58 jihpringle joined #evergreen
18:03 jeffdavis For most of the "duplicates" we have one simple and one composite version.
18:03 Bmagic interesting
18:23 jeffdavis I wonder if the purpose of the constraint is just to allow use of "INSERT ... ON CONFLICT DO UPDATE" rather than explicitly checking for existing matching values before inserting MARC tag info into ccvm.
18:44 jeffdavis Our best guess is that we added duplicate entries during our upgrade to 2.4 so that we could have a format dropdown that included both "Books" (user-friendly) and "Language material" (cataloguer jargon) as search options.
