csharp_ whenever I hear of a location having an outage I remember days in county government when we once had an outage caused by possums. as disrupting as it was at least people got a laugh out of it. |

for those wondering they apparently got into a networking closet with switches |

Rogan: that's a new one on me |

building from the early 70s and funny thing was they had possum problems before but just considered them a minor nuisance ... until then |

I'll add one more: Place: University, time-period: 90's, They remodeled a building and walled off a server. Through a seriews of oversights, the server enced up being inaccessible. IT didn't notice because it was very self-sufficient. A clever engineer had rigged up a method/code to eject the CD-Rom to enguage the reset button on the server whenever it crashed or was going to crash |

years went by, and someone finally tracked it down by an ethernet cable going to nowhere |

there was a story similar to that at my library school though I never met anyone who actually knew the facts, it was a story passed down and I never knew how true it was |
09:43 |

you got me curious, I googled it. It does seem like an urban legend and (probably) untrue. It's like listening to my kids come home from school singing the same* recess songs we sang on the playground. Passed down from generation to generation, it's new to them. This server-in-the-wall seems similar. If you've heard the same basic story too, it's probably urban legend! Ha! There might* be some truth to it but changed/embellished over |

I had been told that story around 2005/2006, and I just tucked it away in my drawer of funny computer stories to tell :), makes me sad to know it's probably not true |

I heard a similar story at Texas A&M in the early 2000s. It was very plausible at the time; they were remodeling a lot of buildings and there was no central IT management. |

using SFTP with ingram is going OK so far. We've had 3 fetcher and 3 pusher runs without incident. |

mmorgan: You have to switch all of the accounts at the same time. If you two accounts with the same username and password and one uses sftp and another uses ftp, it will download duplicate files. I may write that up for a Lp bug. I don't have a technical fix, though we could remove the scheme from the host in the duplicate file checking code. I think that would resolve it. |
10:45 |
Dyrcona |
I still don't know if SFTP works with Baker and Taylor or any other vendors. |
10:46 |
Dyrcona |
Also, the patch for Lp 2060153 helps. |

Launchpad bug 2060153 in Evergreen 3.11 "EDI SFTP Records wrong remote file when sending purchase order " [Medium,Confirmed] https://launchpad.net/bugs/2060153 |
10:47 |
mmorgan |
Dyrcona: Interesting. Is that all accounts for a give library for a given vendor have to be switched at the same time? |
10:54 |
Dyrcona |
mmorgan: Yes, specifically, Ingram in this case. The duplicate file check uses host, username, password, and ind_dir when looking up accounts to check for duplicate files retrieved. It grabs the remote_file from acq.edi_message for all matching accounts. So, to avoid duplicate file retrieval, you have to change the host on all of the matching accounts at the same time. |
10:55 |
Dyrcona |
For reasons we have as many as 5 of these at some libraries for some vendors. |
10:56 |
Dyrcona |
We also switched all ftp1.ingrambook.com to ftp.ingramcontent.com. They're the same server. I may have mentioned that on Friday, too. |
10:57 |
mmorgan |
Dyrcona: Thanks! That's helpful. |
10:58 |
Dyrcona |
You might also encounter problems with defunct accounts that are still active. FTP will keep going with some errors that crash SFTP and in turn crash the fether. |
10:58 |
Dyrcona |
fetcher that is. |
10:59 |
Dyrcona |
If you have any redirects on the crontab line for the fetcher, I suggest removing them for the first couple of runs and making sure that you'll get the emailed output. If you can't get email, then '>&' to a file. You may have to '> file 2>&1' in crontab. |
11:03 |
Dyrcona |
If you do have such accounts, you can verify by connecting with sftp manually and seeing what happens. Just set the provider to active='f'. We had 5 or 6 of these. |
11:06 |
Dyrcona |
I've seen two issues with defunct accounts: 1) the credentials work, but he home directory doesn't exist. This one crashes SFTP and the fetcher both. |
11:07 |
Dyrcona |
2) The credentials don't work and sftp hangs or goes into a loop resending the password. The fetcher appears to hang. You'll have to kill it, deactivate the provider of the offending account, and try again. |
11:08 |
Dyrcona |
The bad accounts don't affect the pusher because libraries aren't using them to send purchase orders, at least not in our case. |
11:09 |
Dyrcona |
We could probably catch the login failure and do something about it, like spit out a warning/error and move on to the next account. |
11:09 |
* Dyrcona |
makes a note to add another bug on Lp. |
11:09 |
Dyrcona |
This should probably be written up somewhere (the wiki?) and shared on the lists. |
11:19 |
Dyrcona |
Hey! I thought I had dokuwiki mode set up on this laptop's Emacs. |
11:21 |
Dyrcona |
"dokuwiki-mode installed" |
11:25 |
Dyrcona |
Ok. Nothing in auto-mode-alist for dokuwiki, so I have to activate the mode manually. |
11:26 |
Dyrcona |
I guess you're also expected to open a url to edit or to create rather than a local file. |
11:37 |
Dyrcona |
Nope. I also need dokuwiki.el for that. I was thinking of mediawiki-mode. |

Looks like a beautiful day for eclipse viewing. My daughter went up to Lancaster, NH to view it. I'm stuck at home where it might get a bit darker. |
11:45 |

Should be about 93% here. |
11:47 |
Dyrcona |
Not sure how dark it will get here. |
11:48 |

I'm not too fussed. I saw a total eclipse when I was a kid. |
11:51 |

The eclipse just happened in 2017 in Missouri, it was total. It's funny, everyone is acting like we didn't just have one |

11:57 |

OK. Well dokuwiki.el won't do me any good because xml-rpc is not enabled on our dokuwiki instance. I'll just write it up locally and paste it then. |

I set up a test vm with sftp and copied files from production, but some things didn't show up until we used the production server. |
