08:42 kmlussier Good morning #evergreen! Happy pre-hack-a-way-week Friday!
08:42 kmlussier How many hyphens can a person put into one word?
08:43 kmlussier @coffee [someone]
08:43 * pinesol brews and pours a cup of Ethiopia Sidamo Guji, and sends it sliding down the bar to eeevil
08:43 kmlussier @tea [someone]
08:43 * pinesol brews and pours a pot of Golden Orchid, and sends it sliding down the bar to eby (http://ratetea.com/tea/whispering-pines/golden-orchid/7244/)
08:44 kmlussier That's two days in a row that eby has gotten tea.
08:46 jeff on Fridays, there is music in the library. (over the PA, before we open)
08:46 jeff but @coffee is also needed
08:47 jeff @coffee [someone]
08:47 * pinesol brews and pours a cup of Panama Esmeralda Especial, and sends it sliding down the bar to jweston

08:47 kmlussier One might argue that dessert is appropriate for a Friday morning.
08:48 kmlussier @dessert [someone]
08:48 * pinesol grabs some chocolate croissants for eglogbot
08:48 mantis1 here here
08:48 mantis1 @dessert kmlussier
08:48 kmlussier Bots can't eat dessert.
08:48 * pinesol grabs some Cookies and Cream Ice Cream for kmlussier
08:48 mantis1 lol snacks the logbot
08:48 mantis1 fantastic
08:48 kmlussier mantis1: Thank you! My IRC life is so much more interesting than my normal life, where I'm not eating dessert at any time of day.
08:49 mantis1 we can always use our imaginationnnn~
08:49 kmlussier Rogan: Good morning! Feeling better?
08:50 Rogan kmlussier: yep. I took some meds and slept deep and long.
08:50 kmlussier Rogan: Glad to hear it!
08:51 Rogan so I'm here with tea and hand and just had a good thought how to handle an issue I'm tackling so it is a good morning
08:51 Rogan s/and hand/in hand/

08:53 kmlussier jeff: Is your Friday music any good?
09:01 mantis1 This season has been terrible
09:02 mantis1 I hope you'll be ok for Hackaway!

09:08 Dyrcona berick: I did `cargo build --release --package evergreen` then copied eg-marc-export to /openils/bin/. I missed the password on of the two lines for eg-marc-export in my script, so I don't know if it is faster, but the binary is certainly smaller without the debugging symbols, etc.

09:18 Dyrcona FWIW, I haven't used --release on my test system. I did that for the production server.
09:40 csharp_ one of the Supy/Limnoria bots in another IRC channel I was in had a @botsnack command and the bot would reply "YUM!"
09:41 csharp_ actually in the Ubuntu channel, it would say "YUM!.. I mean, er, APT!"
09:41 bshum Put that on the wishlist for bot development tasks... got it :)
09:41 csharp_ bshum++
09:42 csharp_ (DNF, the replacement for YUM, doesn't really work with that pun scheme)
09:43 csharp_ terranm++ # core committer!
09:44 kmlussier Wait, what? Did I miss an announcement?
09:44 Dyrcona DNF is motor sports speak for Did Not Finish.
09:44 csharp_ uh... oops, maybe I wasn't supposed to say anything, but yeah, kmlussier, terranm is now ONE OF US
09:44 terranm Thanks, I'll try really hard not to make any of you regret that decision :)
09:45 Dyrcona kmlussier: I don't know if it has been announced, but it was voted this week. AFAIK, someone (gmcharlt or I) still has to set it up in git.
09:45 bshum terranm++ # huzzah!
09:45 Dyrcona terranm++
09:45 kmlussier terranm++ # Well deserved!
09:46 csharp_ Dyrcona: Fedora picked "dnf" because it was a meaningless and not a common typing mistake with the intention that it would eventually become the "yum" command
09:46 csharp_ but like all things like that, dnf is now the way people generally use it
09:46 Dyrcona OK. I like pacman... :)
09:46 csharp_ lrwxrwxrwx. 1 root root 5 Sep 20 20:00 /usr/bin/yum -> dnf-3
09:46 csharp_ so yum *is* now dnf
09:47 csharp_ but for a while, you'd get a warning that yum was deprecated
09:47 Dyrcona Yeah, I haven't used Fedora in a decade or more.
09:47 csharp_ it has been my distro of choice for about that long
09:48 csharp_ I used to bounce between Fedora and Ubuntu

09:52 bshum Took me awhile to get used to "zypper" for SUSE stuff I do now.
09:52 bshum I miss apt :(
09:55 bshum It's okay though, I get to play with it in my spare time
09:55 bshum (whatever that is)
10:01 csharp_ yeah, SUSE is like, huge, in Europe, but I've only ever used it in virtualbox for 15 minutes or so
10:03 berick i started w/ SUSE.  don't remember why.
10:06 berick and happy bday Tom Petty
10:08 * csharp_ lifts a glass
10:08 csharp_ berick: what are we doing for your birthday next week?
10:09 berick merging redis?
10:09 csharp_ YES
10:10 csharp_ @dessert redis
10:10 * pinesol grabs some Mint Chocolate Chip Cookies for redis
10:10 berick that or Resistance where I go on every mission
10:10 csharp_ sounds good too
10:21 Dyrcona Hmm. One of our marc_exports is still running since Tuesday night.
10:21 Dyrcona I wonder if Perl has some kind of issue on virtual machines?
10:22 Dyrcona Well, I can always replace it with eg-marc-export.
10:32 berick Dyrcona: fwiw, the --release build chopped off 1/3 of the runtime for my 150k record+items export.
10:32 berick depends on the data, i'm sure, though
10:34 * JBoyer wonders what Kuma's Korner does for birthdays?
10:38 Dyrcona berick: Yeah, it looks like it will be faster by a couple of hours, maybe as much as 1/3.
10:39 Dyrcona On my long-running Perl export, it has put about 870,044 records in the file, but I didn't think this library had that many, so maybe I'm missing a marc_export patch?

12:08 Dyrcona I thought maybe we were missing the patch for the --descendants option to marc_export, but we have it.
12:08 Dyrcona 'Cause this looks like it is dumping the whole database, not just 1 library's holdings.
12:09 Dyrcona Oh! I think I see why it might not be working..../openils/bin/marc_export -i -e UTF-8 -f XML --descendants=MOUNT WACHUSETT COMMUNITY
12:10 Bmagic does ingest_ctl depricate pingest.pl ?
12:10 Dyrcona Looks like the org. unit is not properly quoted by the wrapper script.
12:10 Dyrcona Bmagic: That remains to be seen, but it probably should.
12:11 Bmagic I'm messing with a 3.11.1 machine, and I ran pingest.pl over the database (while the global flag for queued ingest was turned on) - and it didn't seem to do anything in terms of opac visibility. Then I ran ingest_ctl, and things started happening
12:13 Bmagic bearing in mind that this was a blank DB, bibs were loaded with global flag for queued in gest turned on (for speed), which resulted in nothing being able to turn up in search results
12:13 Bmagic then I figured I'd do what I always do, and pingest.pl the DB. To my surprise, nothing was getting turned up in search. ingest_ctl did the trick
12:15 Bmagic and along those lines: I'm choosing the utility server to run ingest_ctl, but I saw some errors in the primary DB server postgres logs along the lines "failed to ingest, trying ingest_ctl directly", which I can only imagine would attempt to talk to the service if it were running on the database server? Makes me think it needs to be running there instead of util
12:15 Dyrcona Bmagic: I don't recall if pingest.pl directly updates OPAC visibility. It probably doesn't as your experience suggests.
12:17 Bmagic so far, Postgres 15 is kicking butt for me during all of this BTW
12:18 Dyrcona Yeah, Pg 15 is overall much faster than Pg 10 in my experience. IIRC, the boost really kicks in around Pg 13.
12:19 Dyrcona Hmm. My wrapper script quotes the argument, but I guess it is not enough.
12:19 * mmorgan is wondering how we coordinate hackaway transportation. Looks like a few of us indicated a need on the travel sheet.
12:21 Dyrcona Yeah, I wasn't thinking about getting picked up in Indy until mmorgan++ mentioned it. I just assumed someone would be there to pick folks up.
12:42 JBoyer redavis, are you around? ^
12:42 JBoyer FYI, I'll be picking up EOLI employees since I'm already here, so to speak.
12:43 redavis JBoyer, I'm here.
12:44 JBoyer Just making sure you saw the Qs above, sorry if you've already handled it via email / other.
12:45 redavis k, lemme check the spreadsheet.  I know that some are coming in at 10 a.m. and there abouts, but the inn rooms won't be available until around 3.  My plan was to stage people at my house and source sustenance for them as well (not at my house...unless people wanna raid the fridge)
12:46 JBoyer oh, in that case let me know what the plan is too; I'm not sure where our 3 folks are staying and may need to kill some time.
12:47 redavis JBoyer, so I'll pick up Rogan (he's earlier).  It looks like the others (eeevil hasn't expressed their intentions on the travel doc yet - https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1QQgSs2a_XUzwmvD6tR7vfuHK_suznItpk49M2HHelQg/edit?usp=sharing)
12:48 Rogan so long as I'm not hitchhiking I'm cool with it
12:48 Bmagic scottangel and I are driving, so we'll have a car which we can add to the pool if folks need rides!
12:48 JBoyer works for me too, fewer trips.
12:48 redavis Looks like abneiman is coming in at 3, and sleary at 6.  I'll be picking up Rogan, Dyrcona, and mmorgan at 10ish.
12:49 redavis (and no...I've communicated nothing about this in email because it was "next on the list.")
12:50 redavis But I'll send out an email right now as soon as I gather a few more email addresses from hither and yon.  Also Bmagic++
12:50 JBoyer No judgement here, I have so many nexts on my lists that the next thing on the list is to choose what's next on the list.
12:51 redavis We'll likely be doing some type of "go here and eat" thing on Monday and Tuesday evening.  We'll also need to gather times when people are LEAVING to get people back to the airport if applicable.
12:51 redavis JBoyer++
12:52 redavis [next on list - throw list away and start over]
12:52 Dyrcona eeevil's not going in person.
12:52 redavis Hmm, okay.  Well, that is a pretty explicit intention in terms of flights.
12:53 Dyrcona Looks mmorgan and I are on the same flight.
12:54 Dyrcona I will not be paying attention to chat for a bit.

14:07 eeevil redavis++ # thanks for hacker wrangling!  I wish(?) I could be there to make transport even crazier, but alas.
14:08 redavis alas indeed.  It's okay. I think I've been pretty loose on the wrangling.  But, I did openly share my cell phone number for any panicky emergencies.  Also, thanks for reminding me to put the company credit card on something tangential to my person or the like.
14:11 berick "tangential to my person or the like" is my favorite romance novel
14:16 * redavis laughs
14:16 redavis Something for everyone...and no one.  As close as you want...or don't.
14:24 JBoyer "The two stood in front of the store somewhat noncommittally, shuffling from foot to foot occasionally. He glanced in her general direction and said 'Cool, I guess.' Somewhere in the distance a Gen-Xer howled in frustration before bursting into flame."
14:27 redavis It was me.  I was the Gen-Xer.  It was frustration over being both apathetic and wanting answers.  Was it spontaneous combustion?  No, just unnoticed friction.
15:00 berick quality stuff
15:01 redavis lol
15:03 redavis I mean, I think it was Gen-x that was around for the whole mailorder harlequin/silhouette subscription things (like BMG). We got quality stamped on our forehead...(it's washable ink that we know not to remove with magic eraser sponges).
15:18 kmlussier1 I don't know what the harlequin/silhouette subscription thing was, but I was just talking fondly this week about my Columbia House mail order subscription. Those were good times!
15:19 kmlussier1 Oh, my nick is messed up. How sad. Anyway, have a good weekend #evergreen! Safe travels to all who will be going to Indianapolis!

15:21 terranm The true Gen Xer test is the exposure to the Flowers in the Attic books
15:21 terranm Those were passed around like contraband in my junior high
15:22 redavis Oh, full exposure here.  I was just thinking about those the other day and how wrong it all was.
15:23 redavis hmm, I'm not sure how I got ahold of them.  Kinda thing my mom might have accidentally bought them at a garage sale or something like that.  The paperbacks swirled.  Same with Stephen King.
15:24 terranm So much Stephen King!
15:24 terranm Between those and after school specials as latchkey kids, it's no wonder we all have a dark streak
15:26 redavis lol, exactly. The world was exciting and very, very dangerous.  But we also learned to make our own afterschool snacks (if there was food in the kitchen).  So that was good.
15:28 jeffdavis There was a film adaptation of Flowers in the Attic a few years ago, not sure if it was popular enough to create a post-Gen X fanbase though
15:29 jeffdavis My reaction at the time was that some things are better left forgotten
15:29 redavis Yeah...I saw that it was available.  Honestly, those books were super traumatic for me and not entertaining at all.  Your reaction was mine.
15:30 redavis I mean, I read them as a pre-teen and teen...but also my brain wasn't fully developed and I made lots of suspect decisions.
15:33 mantis1 left #evergreen
15:34 terranm I definitely shouldn't have read them at that age (or ever)
15:35 redavis lol, at least we know things to NEVER DO TO CHILDREN.
15:35 terranm I mean... my brother only lit the living room rug on fire ONCE. It was FINE.
15:37 redavis Hmm, that seems...okay. My brothers burned one of their mattresses because they were "camping" under a blanket with an electric lamp.  (how ARE we alive?)
15:41 redavis Thank goodness for Madeleine L'Engle - throwing just a little bit of less crazy and way less harmful into the mix.
15:41 redavis In my case.
15:42 terranm <3
15:45 redavis Alright friendly friends - for all attending the hackaway in person or remotely, see you soon.  If you were listed as an attendee, I've sent my cell phone number.  If you're attending but haven't put your name in the wiki, please do and I'll contact you tomorrow or tonight with some logistical info.  Rogan++ #you're a rockstar.
16:03 terranm Looking forward to it! The PINES folks will get to the lodge around 4pm I think
