Setting up Hatch on a new workstation with a slightly different-than-usual receipt printer, and I'm getting extra blank space at the end of the receipt. I've tried most of the usual things, but without success. Anyone here have tricks/suggestions from experience? |
09:48 |
jeff |
at this point I suspect it may be my template -- I think I'll pull on that string next. Didn't compare with some other / stock templates. |

You've probably already checked the page size in the printer settings, yes? I assume that's part of the usual things. |
09:52 |
jeff |
Yep. Appears to be correct, matches what we're using with success in the XUL client. Behavior changes when I intentionally set it to something incorrect. I'm going to go isolate / rule out it being the single template (this printer only prints hold slips). |

thanks! |

Stompro: Your folks having issue with Connexion today as well? |
10:09 |
Stompro |
Probably, but I'm dealing with our process to update holdings just stopping for some reason on August 23rd, using the metadata api. |
10:10 |
Stompro |
I cannot get their api explorer site to work either... so I don't know if it is us or them. |
10:11 |
Dyrcona |
Ah. Sounds like a possibly different issue. We had a ticket opened this morning about Connexion not working. I didn't read the details because it is normally not my thing. |

I JUST came across reference to that quote. |
10:41 |
Dyrcona |
If it ain't UNIX, I can't spell it. |
10:41 |

(The Music Man came up in conversation the other day because the Broadway show is ending) |
10:41 |
Dyrcona |
I didn't get csharp_'s reference. |
10:42 |
Dyrcona |
We recently watched The Music Man on TCM, but I always think of that quote whenever Ron Hoard comes up, and sometimes when his brother does, too. |
10:43 |
* Dyrcona |
gives up..... |
10:43 |
Dyrcona |
Apparently, I cannot type in English this morning. |
10:43 |
jeff |
(it's a Music Man poster that's involved in the "looks just like ritchie did at that age" line, and the reference is mentioned in the IMDB page for The Music Man) |
10:45 |
Dyrcona |
Yeah, I remember the scene from Happy Days. Weren't they actually going to see the movie, too? |
10:45 |
jeff |
Dyrcona: csharp_'s reference is to Ron Howard being the "narrator" in Arrested Development. There are lots of third-person remarks made, I believe. |
10:46 |
jeff |
to the point where "Narrator: some observation here" has become a bit of a meme, including some merges with other things, including "Narrator: It was DNS." |
10:47 |
Dyrcona |
OK. I never watched Arrested Development. |
10:48 |
Dyrcona |
I guess I got my quote wrong, but memory is like that. Howard says, "Oh, that's ridiculous." |
10:49 |
Dyrcona |
Forty-two years is a long time to keep a quote about nothing significant in your head, eh? |
10:50 |
jeff |
(especially popular when the narrator directly contradicts the previous statements) |
10:50 |
jeff |
me: I'll remember that, I don't need to write it down! |
10:50 |
jeff |
narrator: he would not, in fact, remember that. |
10:51 |
Dyrcona |
:) |
10:52 |
jeff |
most common example I've seen (and likely what csharp_ was referencing) is the DNS one. "it can't be dns. there's no way it's dns. narrator: it was dns." |

My pop culture awareness, except for children's programming, ends somewhere around 2000. For children's programming, it ends somewhere around 2010. ;) |
10:53 |
jeff |
pretty sure I've not actually seen more than a partial episode of Arrested Development, but I've picked up a few references here and there. |
10:53 |

visits the wrong meme sites, apparently. :) |

Dyrcona: the first couple of seasons of Arrested Development are extremely clever and worth watching if you're ever in the mood for ascerbic ridiculousness |

Drat. It was not the template. |
11:57 |
jeff |
test prints with this printer print okay. multiple templates have "extra space" at the bottom. |

Ah. It was both! |
13:45 |
jeff |
(of course, ugh) |
13:45 |
Dyrcona |
It's always both! |
13:54 |
jeff |
the printer and/or driver have a difficult-to-bypass idea of a "page". there's no "80mm x Receipt" paper size, for example. |
13:54 |
jeff |
some templates that were shorter than the "page" printed fine. |
13:55 |
jeff |
others that were just a bit longer would cause it to think that it was dealing with "two pages" and one of the two would be almost completely blank. |
13:55 |
jeff |
solution was to adjust our div to be just a smidge smaller, so that it was always constrained to a specific width (length, after rotation) |

the unapi.bre db function has suddenly become very slow, but only for one specific bib record (AFAIK) - it takes ~30s for the bad record, but <1s for others that I've tried |
19:38 |
jeffdavis |
can't find anything weird about the bad record, and the sudden slowness wasn't triggered by edits to it or holdings changes or anything AFAICT |
21:03 |
jeff |
do you have data that suggests that this particular record was taking less time before now? |
21:09 |
jeff |
and it sounds like you've narrowed it down to the db function call itself? are you calling it directly from psql as a test? |
