Hmm. So a Checked out item can't be marked Missing without checking it in. But Long overdue, or Lost item can be. |

has found a bunch of items that should be Lost or Long Overdue, but have been marked Missing and deleted. |

someone asked me if it's possible to send XMPP directly to Evergreen, and sent along this Zoom bug that depends on exploitable behavior in ejabberd: https://bugs.chromium.org/p/project-zero/issues/detail?id=2254 |
13:13 |
jeffdavis |
specifically it depends on how ejabberd parses the XML of an XMPP message - but I think external clients could only pass in blobs of JSON via the translator, so not sure if EG would be affected? |
13:16 |
berick |
jeffdavis: it's possible, but you'd generally have to go out of your way to allow public access to the ejabberd server |
14:27 |
gmcharlt |
agreed |
14:44 |
jeffdavis |
excellent, thanks |
14:50 |
gmcharlt |
(and to make a stronger statement, if you're installing Evergreen / OpenSRF as docuemnted, you're not exposing the ejabberd port to the world by default) |
14:51 |
gmcharlt |
(to anticipate a potential line of questionining) |

Dyrcona |
Yeah. It also doesn't listen on any external IP addresses by default on Debian or Ubuntu. |
14:55 |
Dyrcona |
Meaning Ejabberd installed from the apt package and not yet configured. |
15:59 |
Dyrcona |
There are some configurations that will expose ejabberd on the LAN, like a typical brick set up with a head running ejabberd and drones running on other servers that use ejabberd on the brick head. |
16:21 |
jeffdavis |
I think part of the concern was whether EG has an API that accepts actual XMPP stanzas. AFAIK it doesn't - XMPP is just used as a transport layer for JSON, you can't talk XMPP with EG unless ejabberd itself is exposed (and it normally wouldn't be). |
16:22 |
gmcharlt |
right |
16:29 |
jeffdavis |
Thanks again. (The part of my brain that pretends to understand the OpenSRF layer is pretty rusty!) |
