well that's annoying. usually when I come across MARC data that claims one encoding but is actually another encoding it's from a migration. Yesterday and today, it's from OCLC. |
10:48 |
jeff |
(maybe this happens all the time and I'm not normally in a position to notice it) |
11:18 |

jeff: Yes, that happens to us, OCLC records with bad data/encodings. |

our open-ils.actor drones are getting swamped |
11:38 |

planning to be off Friday through Monday - might have to set up a cron to restart opensrf everywhere every 15 mins |
11:41 |
csharp |
or write a script that monitors whether certain catalogers are going to do batch updates today and if so, restart opensrf constantly? |

csharp: there's a recent bugfix to reduce settings calls which might help with open-ils.actor - I don't have the LP# handy but IIRC it's in master, Dan Briem was the author I think |

csharp: regarding open-ils.actor.get_barcodes, do you use barcode completion rules at all? |

barcode completion lookups firing every time even though the system has no rules defined always annoyed me. if there isn't a bug for that yet, I'll make one. |
14:22 |
jeff |
and in general i'm wondering if there's a better way to approach things like that, avoiding extra client->server round trips... though they're not nearly as bad as they were in XUL. |
14:23 |
jeff |
booking had some related issues in that regard, I think. now that we're turning up barcode completion for some locations and likely to start doing some booking, I can't disable and ignore them completely. :-) |

Hi. I am a teacher up in Wisconsin. Can you tell me a bit about the Evergreen Library? |

Guest12115 Do you mean the integrated library system software? This channel is for the software not a specific library. |
16:25 |
rhamby |
Evergreen is an ILS that is open source, free to download and use and runs on Linux servers. There are also some companies that provide hosting and support. |

is it ok (on a test machine) to truncate metabib.title_field_entry? Then run reingest? Like, it's not going to blow up Evergreen or anything? It would just cause title searches to result nothing? |
17:13 |
gmcharlt |
Bmagic: you should probably also truncate metabib.combined_title_field_entry, but what you propose to do should not be full of explodium |

csharp/jeff: re actor calls, as a data point I have an 11am log here for a large system with 10k barcode calls and 35k settings calls. and another one with 7k/21k. the settings could be cached with a short expiry, and we could skip get_barcodes if we can prove there are no completion rules, I guess. but those shouldn't be driving open-ils.actor into the ground at that scale... |
17:50 |
jeff |
yeah, I was making no claim other than I found the get_barcodes calls annoying. :-) |

I'm not sure what csharp's other symptoms are with regard to drones getting "swamped". |
