csharp: Did you ever upgrade your production DB to Pg 10? |
09:30 |
Dyrcona |
is anyone using Pg 10 in production for that matter? |
09:39 |
Dyrcona |
I'm going to upgrade our training server to Pg 10. |
09:53 |
csharp |
Dyrcona: nope - I got stymied by family issues - we'll probably do that over Labor Day weekend |

we try not to interfere with libraries over the summer |

@decide check the random number generators or check the raptor fences |

We don't usually do much over the summer, either. I'm planning to upgrade the production db in the fall, too. |

Dyrcona: we have PG 10 on the training server as well. No problems so far, but I don't think it's used much :) |

magazines as serials vs magazines as copies vs magazines as copies with parts... as I understand it, there's little/no point in doing magazines as copies with parts for libraries with a single copy of eash issue ("part"). |
13:57 |
|
mmorgan1 joined #evergreen |
14:14 |
jeff |
and no current advantage to issuance holds vs copy holds when you have a single copy of each issue at each library, because just as there's no "parts equivalence" across libraries, there's no "issuance equivalience" across libraries. |
14:14 |
jeff |
but if anyone here has information to the contrary, I'm all ears. :-) |
14:14 |
jeff |
we're considering moving from magazines as serials to magazines as copies for some libraries. |
14:19 |
Dyrcona |
Magazines as parts is a mess, imho. Some disagree, namely our members who do it. |
14:22 |
jeff |
Is their primary reason for doing magazines as parts to allow part holds to fill with branch1's copyA or copyB of the January 2021 (for example) issue of a given magazine? |
14:22 |
jeff |
(I can't think of another reason to do them as parts, but I've forgotten portions of the last conversation I had with someone about this subject.) |
14:26 |
Dyrcona |
I think that's why they're done as parts. |
14:27 |
Dyrcona |
I'd rather use serials, but copies might work, too, if you allow patrons to place copy holds, which we don't. |
14:28 |
jeff |
we don't at this time. the only useful holds on magazines at present are placed by staff as copy level holds for patrons. |
14:28 |
* Dyrcona |
is actually in a meeting at the moment. |
14:29 |
jeff |
i don't recall if issuance holds are exposed to patrons in Evergreen. |
14:29 |
Dyrcona |
I'm pretty sure parts are used because of holds, but it has caused issues in the past. |
14:30 |
Dyrcona |
I'm a bit fuzzy on details, maybe mislabeled parts and sometimes things didn't load or sort correctly. |
14:30 |

folks use a feature called monographic parts for serials? :-) |

Yes. |

I can absolutely confirm that serials as parts is all about allowing patrons to place holds with a reasonable expectation that they'll get the specific issue they want to read. |

Not sure why they're chosen over issuances, but the last time I saw* issuances in the opac they were basically hidden down in an accordion thing that no patron would ever find without a librarian over their shoulder. *This was a very long time ago. |
15:05 |
mmorgan |
Also, many libraries find the serials module to be too much overhead |

JBoyer: Pretty sure the accessibility of issuances in the catalog has not changed ;-) |
15:07 |
mmorgan |
Though haven't explored that in the bootstrap opac |
15:09 |
jeff |
and does my understanding match yours that both parts and issuance holds will only pull from copies at a given library, no way to say "fill this hold with a {copy/part/serial_unit} Jan 1 2021 Time Magazine from this library or another library"? |
15:10 |
mmorgan |
jeff: Part holds should pull from any library whose items have the same part assigned. |
15:11 |
Dyrcona |
Well, I'm taking off for bit. Catch you all tomorrow. |
15:13 |
jeff |
mmorgan: hrm. not sure why I thought that parts were lib-specific. |

mmorgan: perhaps I was misremembering another parts limitation: no way to say "this part is a subset of this other part" |

(for libraries that do disc1-3 disc4-6 vs libraries that do disc1-2, disc3-4, disc5-6. |

They're not lib specific, but naming of parts needs to be consistent. If one library uses Jan 1 2021 and another uses January 1 2021, it won't work. |
15:16 |
jeff |
(of course, bad example because how do you tell which disc the patron wants) |
15:16 |
jeff |
got it. |
15:17 |

now I'm going to re-check to see if issuance holds are indeed limited to a single library. |
