Just curious. Does anyone think it is possible to filter out records without images for automated carousels? Based on what I know about those images, I don't think so, but figured to ask. |
10:17 |
jeff |
we do that, but we have our own pre-existing carousels. |
10:19 |
mantis |
jeff: Were those carousels manually made? |
10:19 |
jeff |
i haven't looked at how carousels are implemented in Evergreen to know how simple it might be. |
10:19 |
mantis |
We have a sql we use to create an automated one |
10:19 |

nods |
10:19 |
jeff |
we have a bunch that are based on lists, and a bunch that are based on canned searches. |
10:20 |
jeff |
they all have their images tested by a recurring task, and the carousels displayed to users omit any without an image. |
10:21 |
jeff |
i'd have to do some looking to see how difficult it would be to adapt the technique to Evergreen. |
10:21 |
jeff |
your issue is that you're creating them automatically, and of course without a human reviewing the items, you don't have the chance to omit (or upload local images for) records that lack images? |
10:22 |
jeff |
and you don't want placeholder images or broken images, and the carousel isn't able to exclude them at display time? |
10:25 |
mantis |
jeff: Yeah that's basically it |
10:26 |
mantis |
We don't want to get rid of the automated carousel implemented just because it works so well, but every now and then you get records without images |
10:26 |
mantis |
I understand the image is tied to the ISBN or UPC so that might make this impossible to filter for automated buckets |

mantis, You could run a script that looks at the generated buckets and removes entries that return a 404 for their covers, but you'd have to run it every time the carousel updater runs. |
11:09 |
JBoyer |
Which I think is only once a day by default |
11:13 |
mantis |
JBoyer: Oh thank you |
11:13 |
mantis |
I'll consider it |
11:13 |
Dyrcona |
It would be better to add it to the back end call that generates the bucket entries. It could look at the filesystem. |
11:14 |
Dyrcona |
Or, you could do what JBoyer said, but check the directory where the images are cached. |
11:14 |
JBoyer |
The only covers on the filesystem are the ones you put there yourself; the rest live in memcache |
11:14 |
Dyrcona |
Of course, bricks might complicate things. |
11:15 |
Dyrcona |
Oh, right.... |
11:15 |
Dyrcona |
I should have checked before saying anything. |

Dyrcona |
Well, at least I'm taking the afternoon off. I think I need it. :) |

keep in mind that with various providers, images come and go. one day you might not have an image, the next day it might be there. unfortunately it also goes the other way, also. sometimes images disappear. |
11:56 |
jeff |
you can also report on missing images and provide them locally, by record id. (Evergreen has support for this, we use it for things that are very local, or things that lack ISBNs or coverage in the various providers) |

puppets, kits, etc. |
