09:36 Dyrcona Whee! Testing the new brick's OPAC over a ssh tunnel through the load balancer..... Have to adjust the URL to add my local port every time it does a redirect, but otherwise doable.
09:37 Dyrcona The web staff client.... Fuhgeddaboutit.....
09:38 Dyrcona Unless you can get the forwarding working as the root user, which I don't feel like dealing with.
09:42 Dyrcona Kernel update for the laptop. Think I'll install it and reboot. Back in a bit!

10:23 jeff Dyrcona: dynamic port forwarding in your SSH client (-D argument to the OpenSSH client) will set up a SOCKS4/SOCKS5 proxy that you can point your browser at.
10:24 jeff Dyrcona: It does require pointing an entire browser (or browser profile) at the proxy unless you're also doing something with a PAC file or some other plugin/addon, but it avoids the need to make adjustments to ports like you describe, and it should work with websockets/etc.
10:24 alynn26 joined #evergreen
10:25 jeff ("entire browser" as in, you adjust the proxy settings in the browser, it's not "just" a matter of modifying the URL in a single window/tab)
10:33 Dyrcona jeff: No, didn't mess with proxy settings. I'll try dynamic proxy later. Haven't used it before.
10:38 JBoyer I use it now and then, very handy. (I think some of my ~/.ssh/config definitions on some machine automatically turn that on for port 8123 or whatever the default squid port is.)
11:37 Dyrcona My naive attempt at using the -D proxy with a -L tunnel doesn't work.
11:42 Dyrcona Hrm. Do I have to set up a remote port tunnel, first?
11:42 jeff instead of -L 8001:remotehostname:80 and connecting to http://localhost:8001 to get http://remotehostname/ you pass -D 8080 to ssh, configure your browser to use localhost:8080 as a SOCKS4/SOCKS5 proxy, and then browse the web as if you're on the remote machine (though "localhost" will probably point at your local host still) (both the 8080 and the 8001 are semi-arbitrary for this example)
11:43 jeff some browsers you can tweak the proxy bypass / "don't use proxy for:" list to no longer contain localhost.
11:43 jihpringle joined #evergreen
11:48 Dyrcona Oh, great. Chromium gives me an error when I try to set up a proxy. It wants to set the o/s proxy, but an error occurred.
11:49 jeff yeah, I dislike that about Chrome/Chromium on some (all, now?) operating systems.
11:49 Dyrcona Secure connection failed in Firefox....
11:50 Dyrcona I'm using a valid, wildcard cert, too, unless I botched the configuration, which I don't think I did.
11:53 Dyrcona Firefox also isn't allowing me to go ahead despite the risks.
11:56 Dyrcona I obviously need to do more reading about setting up the proxy, and given what's going on here today, I do not have time to do that right now.
12:07 Bmagic yall be crazy
12:07 Bmagic "The internet is a series of pyyhpes"
12:08 Dyrcona Well, I gotta sign out. Had an "emergency" come up at home that I have to deal with.
12:08 Bmagic good luck
12:09 Dyrcona Thanks!
12:09 Dyrcona It's not major, but urgent enough. A tree came down in my yard.
12:09 Bmagic oh boy, I know what that's like. Mine hit my house though :) a bit different
12:09 Dyrcona Fortunately, no one and no bulidings, cars, etc. were damaged.
12:10 Dyrcona My biggest fear is one clobbers one of the neighbor's garages.
12:10 Bmagic couple of tons of wood hits your roof, takes a few months to work out the repairs with the insurance, meanwhile, your heating bill is $400/ month because of the gaping holes
12:10 mmorgan Dyrcona: Glad no major damage! Good luck!
12:11 Dyrcona Bmagic: Yeah. You have my sympathies. I need to have a service come in so I can avoid that, too.
12:11 Bmagic from now on, I'm paying attention to the state of the limbs :)
12:12 Bmagic (in my example though, the "limb" was as big as most mature trees - the tree was over 50 years old)
12:12 Dyrcona Yeah. This might be a "just a limb," too. I've got to go out and have a better look.
12:13 Dyrcona Thanks, everyone.

15:27 sandbergja Just want to double check this before we do so: it's safe to have both edi_pusher and edi_order_pusher cronned up, as we're working on migrating from one to the other?
15:28 berick sandbergja: yes
15:28 sandbergja berick++
15:28 sandbergja thanks!
15:30 * csharp confirms that it's no problem to run both
15:30 sandbergja csharp++
15:35 sandbergja It will be so nice to have these migrated!  The webrick piece has been going down so often lately. :-(
15:35 berick can't wait to get back to that project as well
15:36 csharp yeah - that was annoying to maintain
15:36 csharp berick: you mean the availability codes, etc?
15:36 berick csharp: no i mean using the new edi_order_pusher.  still using the webrick here :\
15:36 csharp oh!
15:37 csharp we're fully migrated and all is well
15:37 berick glad to hear it
15:38 sandbergja I'm so grateful that tlittle documented the process so well!

15:39 berick sandbergja: where is that?

16:06 Dyrcona Bmagic: It is just a limb. I cut some up but I still have a lot of work to do.

16:07 Dyrcona So, when I use the ssh socks proxy https connections all fail.
16:13 Dyrcona OK! I fixed it. I deleted the proxy settings for HTTP, HTTPS, and FTP in Firefox and left only the socks proxy configured.

16:14 Bmagic why can't scripts cut limbs?
16:15 Dyrcona If they could..... :)
16:15 gmcharlt but just the right number and sort of limbs
16:16 * mmorgan was going to say there'd likely be no trees left.
16:16 Dyrcona mmorgan++
16:16 berick mmorgan: so no more printing!

16:18 Bmagic here here!
16:18 csharp If trees could scream, would we be so cavalier about cutting them down?
