09:06 Dyrcona @decide remmina or vinagre
09:06 pinesol Dyrcona: go with remmina
09:06 jvwoolf joined #evergreen
09:14 Dyrcona pinesol: Good choice! I've used them both, and I think I prefer Remmina. Think I'll just install both, since they have nearly identical dependencies.
09:14 pinesol Dyrcona: If all else fails, try this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rubber_duck_debugging
09:14 Dyrcona pinesol: What do you think I'm doing?
09:14 pinesol Dyrcona: did you finish your beer?
09:14 Dyrcona Actually, no. I have 1 left in the fridge.

10:20 Dyrcona Our fine generator appears to be hung up. It started at 09:00 EDT. The last OpenSRF message (from open-ils.storage) show up in the logs at 9:04 EDT. This machine basically does nothing else at this time of the day.
10:25 Dyrcona All of the database connections from that machine are idle. I assume that something timed out and now the fine generator is taking a dirt nap. It did this on Saturday afternoon, and I "fixed" it this morning. Apparently, we have too many fines for Evergreen to calculate with our current timeout settings.

10:47 Dyrcona We're using the parallel generator, and I suspect some issue with that.
10:50 Dyrcona I get 5 "rolling back transaction" messages in the log, which is 1 less than our parallel setting.
10:50 Dyrcona I think I'm gonna disable the parallel setting and run this thing manually to see what happens.

11:09 csharp @band add Lunch Brake
11:09 pinesol csharp: Band 'Lunch Brake' added to list
11:09 Dyrcona It seems to be working better without the parallel setting for now.
11:10 Dyrcona @blame [band]
11:10 pinesol Dyrcona: It's all How Many Librarians's fault!
11:10 Dyrcona It just may be in this case. :)
11:10 Dyrcona pinesol seems to be in good form today.
11:10 pinesol Dyrcona: Leave me alone, I'm busy right now.
11:11 rfrasur_ Pinesol is so spunky.
11:11 pinesol rfrasur_: Does the abacus count itself?
11:11 rfrasur_ Yes, Pinesol, of course it must.
11:11 * mmorgan pictures evergreen feeding pennies, nickels and dimes into thousands of coin slots.
11:12 rfrasur_ And digging out the ones that didn't sort properly and refeeding them.
11:18 Dyrcona "Does the abacus count itself?" is the debut album from How Many Librarians.
11:20 rfrasur_ Hmm...limited release, special edition pressed into beige vinyl?  With a QR code leading to a website with way too many hyperlinks pushing databases and free audiobook sites?
11:31 Dyrcona :)
11:32 rfrasur_ btw, I love free audiobooks.
11:34 Dyrcona I don't do audiobooks. I don't think I retain as much if I'm listening as opposed to reading. I do like ebooks, because my actual shelves are full.
11:39 mmorgan We have a library that's trying to get all their workstations set up to print scannable barcodes on their hold receipts. A number of them are set up and working fine, but 3 workstations refuse to print the scannable barcode.
11:40 rfrasur_ My brain hasn't been particularly awash with joy of reading recently.  Audiobooks are relaxing (for me) if the narrator isn't annoying and it's fairly mindless drivel.  Listening to some steampunk thing from Jim Butcher right now (not at this exact moment).
11:40 rfrasur_ mmorgan, are they cloning settings or doing each individually?
11:41 mmorgan We have tried swapping receipt printers, reinstalling hatch, different fonts, but it's still the numbers rather than the scannable code that prints on their receipts.
11:41 mmorgan rfrasur_: Which settings are you referring to?
11:42 mmorgan They are using the same print template on all workstations from a flash drive.
11:42 rfrasur_ Not any specific settings.  Just general workstation settings.
11:43 rfrasur_ can you pastebin the code for the template?
11:45 mmorgan They are setting printers and print settings on workstations individually. I will see if I can grab that out of the db. This is the snippet I provided to them to print the scannable code.
11:45 mmorgan <div style= "font-family:'Free 3 of 9 Extended'; font-size: 200%">*{{patron.card.barcode}}*</div>
11:46 rfrasur_ And they've verified that they have the font installed on all of those computers?
11:47 mmorgan rfrasur_: Yes, at least the one workstation we were focusing on.
11:48 mmorgan Odd thing, I had them try another font, I suggested wingdings, and the font on the receipt did look different, but it wasn't wingdings, still numbers.
11:50 rfrasur_ I don't know the answer to your question, but it seems definite that it's a font issue.  Is it displaying the barcode number or different numbers?
11:52 mmorgan It is printing the appropriate barcode, as numbers, for the patron whose slip it is. I think that's what you asked?
11:54 Dyrcona mmorgan: You've tried rebooting the problem workstations?
11:55 rfrasur_ mmorgan, yes.  That's what I meant.
11:57 mmorgan Dyrcona: Yes, rebooted several times
11:58 mmorgan Question, should the scannable barcode show in the preview when configuring the print template?
12:01 Dyrcona Answer: I wouldn't expect it to.
12:02 mmorgan Ok, thanks. I have not seen the scannable code in the preview, but it does print in my testing.
12:07 jvwoolf joined #evergreen
12:07 * mmorgan takes that back. I see the scannable barcode in the preview.
12:09 mmorgan Hmm. pastebin: Service Temporarily Unavailable
12:09 Dyrcona I didn't expect it to show up, but I guess that's a good sign.
12:13 Dyrcona mmorgan: Do other Windows programs see the barcode font? Can you use it in Notepad, for instance?
12:17 mmorgan I asked them to try Word, but I'll need to confirm with them what the findings were. I neglected to make note of them :-(
12:25 Dyrcona My only suggesting is to try removing the font and reinstalling it if that hasn't been done a million times already.
12:25 Dyrcona s/suggesting/suggestion/
12:27 mmorgan Dyrcona: Some of the workstations were new installations of the font, but worth a try. I'll revisit the issue with them.
12:27 mmorgan Dyrcona++
12:27 mmorgan rfrasur_++
12:29 rfrasur_ lol, I helped NOT at all.
12:29 rfrasur_ mmorgan++  rfrasur_--
12:32 mmorgan Ok, in Word scannable barcode printed to the receipt printer. Is there something in Hatch to check? We've checked that it was installed, reinstalled it, tried an older version. Maybe try reinstalling the Evergreen Hatch Extension?
12:32 mmorgan That last is easy, will give that a shot.
12:33 Dyrcona Make sure that Evergreen has the use hatch for printing box checked, also. I know that's obvious, but sometimes we overlook the obvious.
12:36 mmorgan Yes, we have checked that, but it is true that we overlook the obvious. Just last week, troubleshooting a receipt printer, someone had "borrowed" the usb cable.

13:05 jeffdavis We missed last Tuesday's dev meeting, do we want to try to have one tomorroy?
13:17 jonadab mmorgan: We often come in to find cables (most often video cables, but sometimes others) unplugged first thing in the morning.  I generally blame the cleaning people for dusting too vigorously and bumping things loose.
13:19 Dyrcona That reminds me of a place where I used to work. One customer would call in every Friday morning that their system had rebooted over night. Turned out that the cleaning service came in every Thursday night, and they unplugged the computer so that they could plug in the vacuum cleaner.

13:30 mantis1 Hi friends.  Got a brain scratcher; I tried searching Launchpad but cound't find anything relevant but I'll keep looking.
13:31 mantis1 I was on call with a librarian and went into her computer to see that when she logs into Chrome (with any account, profile, etc), Evergreen times out and goes into offline mode.  The connection is very slow but on Firefox it's fine.
13:31 mantis1 We're still on 3.1.16
13:33 mantis1 I cleared cache, disabled extensions (they don't use Hatch), restarted, used new profiles, new logins, etc.
13:33 mantis1 Also cleared cookies
13:57 eby i can't think of much mantis1 but you might look in chrome dev tools network tab. i think there is some timings you could look at to see if chrome is trying some other dns first that is taking awhile to fail, etc. It should also tell you the IP it thinks it should be trying in the header area I think.
13:59 mantis1 eby: thank you very much!
14:54 csharp mantis1: is Firefox an option?  (just thinking of ways to keep the staff member working...)
14:56 csharp mantis1: also, Evergreen will do that if it can't reach the server - if internet is known working otherwise, DNS stuff like eby suggested is a possibility (or wider ISP problems)
