is the evergreen virtual conference schedule in eastern time? |
| 11:20 |
Dyrcona |
cmalm: Good question. I assumed that they were. |

same here, after I remembered that there's a time difference. have definitely fallen into the "working from home for long enough that time doesn't mean much" bucket, heh. |
| 11:31 |
alynn26 |
yes, the conference is in Eastern Time. |
| 11:32 |
cmalm |
thank you! |
| 11:34 |
Dyrcona |
cmalm: I know what you mean. I woke up thinking it was Saturday already. |
| 11:35 |
alynn26 |
Don't feel bad. I was thinking the Conference was next week, and I'm not finished with one of my presentations at all |
| 11:35 |
alynn26 |
Or anywher near finished |
| 11:39 |
cmalm |
I love the relief of that realization instead of realizing I don't have the extra week I thought I did. /headdesk |

@later tell cmalm confirming all times Eastern for the Online Conference, and I've added a note to the Schedule page indicating this! Thanks for the catch. |

Ha. My sister sent me a meme a while back that says "This is the most Saturdayest Sunday Wednesday ever." I made it my desktop background, lol. |

We have a library wanting to set up a checkin workstation for patrons. Has anybody done that? |
| 13:46 |
csharp |
not a use case I've heard of in PINES libraries |
| 13:46 |
bshum |
So like a self checkin station? |
| 13:47 |
bshum |
I mean, wouldn't the staff end up having to handle all the material anyways? |
| 13:47 |
bshum |
Or figuring out if it needs to go out for holds, etc. |
| 13:47 |
csharp |
plus sticky hands all over the scanner, etc |
| 13:48 |
csharp |
Home Depot went to a hand-held scanner for self checkout right before the pandemic started - hard not to see that as a plus right now :-/ |
| 13:48 |
csharp |
s/hard not to/hard to/ |
| 13:49 |
jvwoolf |
bshum: Staff is planning to not touch the materials for a period of time, but want a way to get them off the patron's record. |
| 13:50 |
bshum |
Hmm, gotcha |
| 13:50 |
bshum |
So this is where something like one of those special checkin modifiers would help |
| 13:51 |
bshum |
The ones that put it into like a transit status or suspended status |
| 13:51 |
csharp |
yeah, that's what our libraries are doing as far as I know - let them sit, then backdate or use amnesty mode |
| 13:52 |
jihpringle |
same, our libraries are letting them sit and letting patrons know the items will remain on their card for several days |
| 13:53 |
alynn26_away |
use a kiosk, set to checkin, with "Capture Local Holds As Transits" Checkin Modifier selected. But to do this I would set a user that only could check in materials. |
| 13:53 |
jihpringle |
jvwoolf: if the library really wants patrons to do the check in, could they set up a scanner with a really long cord so all the patrons have access to is the scanner? |
| 13:53 |
jihpringle |
staff would need to monitor the computer though to see if anything pops up |
| 13:54 |
alynn26_away |
That another option. That would be what I would do for the most part. |
| 13:56 |
jihpringle |
depending on whether the library is filling hold though checking in items that can't go out right away could cause some issues |
| 13:56 |
alynn26_away |
IF you have a staff set to monitor it, while doing other things. I would make sure the Volumne was turned up so that they could catch the beeps |
| 13:58 |
alynn26_away |
That is why I would use the "Capture Local Holds as Transits" that way everything goes intransit until they can be dealt with. |
| 13:59 |
jvwoolf |
Another thing I considered was having offline checkin set up in kiosk mode, and having staff upload that at the end of the day. |
| 13:59 |
bshum |
That's the one, capture local holds as transits. |
| 14:00 |
|
cmalm joined #evergreen |
| 14:00 |
alynn26_away |
That would work depending on how long they wanted to hold the materials. Processing it Offline would still capture the holds |
| 14:00 |
jihpringle |
that's really good to know about the Capture local holds as transits |
| 14:02 |
jvwoolf |
Yeah, that might be the way to go if they decide to do this. |
| 14:02 |
Dyrcona |
Evergreen has a self-check interface wouldn't that work? |
| 14:03 |
jvwoolf |
Dyrcona: Only does check out, as far as I know |
| 14:03 |
Dyrcona |
Oh, I missed that you want them to check things in. |
| 14:03 |
jvwoolf |
Dyrcona: I don't, personally. But they do. :) |
| 14:03 |
Dyrcona |
"checkin workstation" didn't register. |
| 14:04 |
Dyrcona |
Well, "you" can mean different things. :) |
| 14:04 |
jvwoolf |
Understood :-D |
| 14:05 |
Dyrcona |
I don't really have any good ideas that wouldn't require some development. |
| 14:07 |
Dyrcona |
But, yeah, using the capture holds as transits modifier would be a good idea. |
| 14:08 |
Dyrcona |
Or maybe noop checkins...Can you do those from the staff client? I've used it in scripts for mass checkins of items. |
| 14:13 |
Dyrcona |
Be nice to have a suppress all popups and warnings option, I suppose. |
| 14:25 |
bshum |
So we need a new status of "quarantined" ? :) |
| 14:25 |
bshum |
Kidding, kidding... |
| 14:26 |

Dyrcona |
We actually had someone suggest that locally. |
| 14:28 |
csharp |
we thought of the same thing - maybe a "delayed" status |
| 14:50 |
jeffdavis |
Is anyone actually extending their "reshelving" period beyond 24h? |
| 14:51 |
jeffdavis |
(or whatever you normally use) |
| 14:56 |
Dyrcona |
We talked about it. |
| 14:56 |
|
sandbergja joined #evergreen |

Dyrcona |
IIRC, there's an OU setting for that, so other people can change it without me being aware of it. |
| 14:58 |
|
khuckins_ joined #evergreen |
| 15:00 |
Dyrcona |
Looks like we have extended it for 1 library. |
| 15:03 |
Dyrcona |
Our default reshelving interval is 2 hours. We have 1 library with 0 hours and another with 10 hours, and one that was recently set to 73 hours. |
| 15:37 |
mmorgan |
We talked about extending the reshelving interval and changing the label on the Reshelving status to Quarantined, but most libraries' current thinking is to quarantine before checking items in. |
| 15:45 |
|
mantis left #evergreen |
| 15:49 |
jeff |
most of our items will be checked in via sorter/AMH/bookdrop before they are quarantined. |
| 15:50 |
jeff |
so we're extending reshelving interval, mapping that copy status to Checked Out in our discovery index, and will likely prevent Reshelving copies from showing in our holds pull list reports. |
| 15:51 |
jeff |
(haven't determined yet if we'll prevent them from being targeted, or just from being displayed in the pull list. ideally the former.) |
| 15:52 |
jeff |
I think we talked about it here a few weeks ago and miker may have had a suggestion on preventing targeting. Might have been changing a flag on config.copy_status for Reshelving, might have been something with weighting. We want holds to be placed even if the only copies are reshelving, but ideally a reshelving copy would never be the best/current copy for a hold. |
| 16:01 |
Dyrcona |
Isn't there an option to allow the placement of holds even if there are no holdable copies? |
| 16:02 |
jeff |
I know you can prevent holds if there are any available copies at the pickup lib. :-) |
| 16:02 |
jeff |
Not sure about what you just asked offhand, though. |
| 16:03 |
Dyrcona |
I think there's a setting for that, but I could be confused, and I just shut down my tunnels, etc., so I'm not going to look in the database right now. |
| 16:04 |
Dyrcona |
I just thought that such a setting in conjunction with setting reshelving status to not holdable would work to achieve something like what you want. |
| 16:04 |
Dyrcona |
I think there's a place unfillable hold option somehere. Maybe it's a permission? |
| 16:05 |
mmorgan |
We allow placing unfillable holds, I think it is a permission. |
| 16:08 |
mmorgan |
But I'm not seeing it ATM |
