We have a library asking if they can check out a single item and have it count as 15 circulations to the same patron. It's a kit that has 15 items in it. Has anybody dealt with a similar request? |

jvwoolf: I have not heard that one! From a librarian perspective, that sounds like they're trying to artificially inflate their statistics ;) |
10:39 |

jvwoolf: I've been asked that. The answer is it's either one or more than one item. They can either barcode items indvidually in the kit or the kit itself. If the issue is that they're not easily barcoded then barcodes can be affixed to the kit case for easy scanning. |

terran: I had that thought, but if it's a book club kit, I kind of get it. |
10:42 |
jvwoolf |
rhamby: So, they scan each barcode individually |
10:42 |
jvwoolf |
? |
10:42 |
rhamby |
jvwoolf: that's one approach and it works fine |

Good idea |

rhamby: Thanks, I will suggest it. |
10:43 |

jvwoolf: the problem is that it's trying to fit a circle into a square peg, concpetually is it one one item or not..... I usually recomemnded with kits that a checklist be included in the kit box but most librarians know to do that anyway |
10:44 |
rhamby |
jvwoolf: with book club kits its also handy because then they can easily swap in donated copies fast without changing barcodes, something needed with book club kits a lot |

rhamby: Good points |

I got a report that iPhone browsers are changing the apostrophe into %E2%80%99 and this is causing catalog search failures. for example https://fitchburg.cwmars.org/eg/opac/results?query=Harry%E2%80%99s+trees&qtype=keyword&locg=40 |
12:09 |
krvmga_ |
as opposed to skipping over the apostrophe |

i want to know if i should report this as a bug |

my understanding is that %E2%80%99 is the "pretty" apostrophe. Is that something we should be allowing for? |
12:15 |
bshum |
Ugh, is that why my text messages on my phone have been annoying "pretty" lately? |
12:15 |
bshum |
Explains so much... |
12:17 |

Well a cursory google search tells me this is an iOS11+ quirk. And it affects lots of other things like people who use apostrophe in their passwords, etc. |

Thanks a lot Apple. |

If they turn off "smart punctuation" in their settings, it will stop, in theory. |

goes to turn his off... |
12:24 |
rhamby |
bshum: I would definitely turn it off, also Apple's core data serivces don't match it against simple apostraphes so depending on what you have stored in apple services it can cause ... issues |
12:24 |
bshum |
Apple-- # again |
12:24 |
rhamby |
and as much as I use apple, yeah, this was definitely a feature I could have done without |
12:30 |
bshum |
I know I turned it off on my Macbook awhile ago, but I hadn't gotten annoyed enough on my phone to dig into it |
12:31 |
bshum |
I suppose it's a global issue on all Apple devices. |
12:31 |
bshum |
Not just iOS mobile |
12:34 |
rhamby |
bshum: yeah, in macos it's under the keyboard preferences, there's a checkbox for smart quotes (that should be turned off by default) |

I imagine there are people who do like that feature. Those people are a difference audience .... |
