13:59 terran Informal survey: Do your libraries use Codabar format for library cards, or something different?
14:05 agoben No, we use Code 39 for our library cards.  We do have some libraries that still have Codabar item barcodes though.
14:08 jihpringle terran: we encourage our libraries to use 14 digit Codabar for library cards and items, but we have lots of older barocodes in all sorts of formats
14:11 terran Thanks!
14:12 kmlussier Massachusetts libraries all use Codabar. I think CW MARS has some libraries that still have materials with an older barcode format, but, in those libraries, they have been using Codabar for all new materials for years.
14:12 mmorgan terran: Our libraries use Codabar.
14:12 terran Thanks! We use Codabar for our cards and all new items, but there are some older items that use various other formats.
14:15 abneiman terran: all (or the vast majority) of MD public libraries still use codabar 14 for cards and item barcodes

14:37 * JBoyer loses hope that the "strict barcode" option is ever going away...
14:39 mmorgan JBoyer: Do you have problems with "strict barcode"?
14:40 JBoyer Since we're not all using the old CODABAR format here, the only time that option ever comes up is when someone accidentally turns it on and then they get a popup for every (or most) item they scan.
14:41 JBoyer I know I could remove it from the templates in the web client if it came to that, but we don't get the question quite often enough for that.
14:41 mmorgan That would be annoying.
14:43 mmorgan Since we're almost all codabar, we find it useful. I hate to think of how many *more* precats we would have if we didn't use strict barcode.
14:44 JBoyer true, since it basically still results in valid scans even if the ends aren't scanned it could be a real mess.
14:44 JBoyer I used to be really into barcode symbologies. I believe my old library is still running an ILL tracker that uses a codabar generator that I built for them.
14:45 JBoyer (It's certainly easier to generate the proper graphics for a non-self checking barcode! :) )
14:46 jeff we modified strict barcode in the xul client to permit our additional barcodes.
14:46 jeff it was very useful when we had an old tattle-tape checkin workstation whose new barcode head resulted in frequent partial-scans.
14:47 jeff ...and we had a library in the shared system that used very short barcodes.
14:47 jeff so we'd end up checking in their items and generating a transit.
14:47 jeff but a modified strict barcode to the rescue there.
14:48 mmorgan For those that don't use codabar, is there a check digit in your barcodes?
