09:06 Dyrcona So, fun thing.
09:06 Dyrcona The 2-day courtesy notices blew up Sunday morning.
09:07 Dyrcona There were over 2x the normal number of these notices owing to the long weekend and everything being due today instead of yesterday.
09:10 rlefaive joined #evergreen
09:17 Dyrcona Ran out of cstores, of course.
09:17 eady joined #evergreen
09:20 lsach joined #evergreen
09:21 JBoyer Dyrcona, Out of curiosity, what's your cstore limit vs your trigger limit? I think we've been able to avoid situations like that by having a much higher limit on cstore/pcrud than the services that will be calling them.
09:21 Dyrcona Just a minute, I'm doing something else.
09:21 JBoyer certainly no rush, just a thought I had.
09:24 Dyrcona JBoyer: open-ils.trigger: 20 open-ils.cstore: 60
09:25 JBoyer Huh, that should be pretty comfortable unless there's a lot else happening at the time.
09:25 Dyrcona Well, the fine_generator was also stuck when I checked it Sunday morning.
09:26 JBoyer That's at one jammed, but even using parallel generators wouldn't be too many.
09:27 Dyrcona We had 48,761 total 2day notices, only 149 when to state complete, 5 were invalid, and the rest were collected.
09:28 Dyrcona And for 3 hours in the logs, "unable to spawn child."
09:28 eady joined #evergreen
09:29 JBoyer Oh, unable to spawn child is an interesting message.
09:29 Dyrcona open-ils.cstore, of course.
09:29 kmlussier joined #evergreen
09:30 JBoyer I thought a couple folks have run into issues with huge numbers of events and possible memory issues, maybe the memory pressure caused failures to spawn new cstore drones in such a way that the whole thing wasn't killed by the oom killer?
09:30 JBoyer Kind of hard to test that, really, but it sounds possible.
09:31 JBoyer s/test/verify/
09:33 Dyrcona kern.log doesn't show anything.
09:34 Dyrcona The machine has 32GB of RAM.
09:34 JBoyer That would be hard to clog.
09:34 Dyrcona Of course, I don't know how much RAM it was using or if it had started swapping at the time.
09:35 Dyrcona Right now, it has 147 MB in swap.
09:35 Dyrcona And only 4GB reported as used with 18GB in buff/cache.
09:35 yboston joined #evergreen
09:35 JBoyer I was about to ask, do you have a monitoring system with any historical data in it? (we have icinga with pnp4nagios installed so I have some very rough graphs of things like this)
09:36 Dyrcona We have nagios, but I don't think it is monitoring RAM use.
09:36 JBoyer Having anything in swap on a 32GB machine implies it was getting tight at some point, but its hard to say when that appeared.
09:37 Dyrcona JBoyer: Not really. Things that are not needed can got to swap after a while.
09:38 JBoyer Ah, hadn't thought of that. (could always use that RAM for cache I suppose.)
09:38 csharp Dyrcona: this is a script we have in place for nagios RAM use monitoring: http://git.evergreen-ils.org/?p=contrib/pines/genasys.git;a=blob;f=templates/monitor/check_freemem;h=65f446bab1a850d91c10c22ef721f2977b87bdc9;hb=HEAD
09:38 Dyrcona It probably was tight, though, given the amount in RAM.
09:39 Dyrcona csharp, thanks. I'll have a look.
09:44 dodobrain joined #evergreen
09:47 Dyrcona I suppose if it started swapping, things could be going too slowly for Evergreen.

13:04 robbiecalwls Hi Everyone.  Hope you had a nice holiday weekend.  Really banging my head against the wall with web client.
13:04 robbiecalwls setup a new server as a test, signed SSL cert, can get into software client fine, web client no
13:05 robbiecalwls Edge gives me "login failed" when I know my username/pass is correct and firefox does nothing
13:07 robbiecalwls any thoughts/help/hints are greatly appreciated!  :)
13:07 nfBurton Did you test the login at the end through srfsh?
13:08 nfBurton The end of installation**
13:08 robbiecalwls yes, works fine
13:08 robbiecalwls even created an additional user and tested OK
13:08 nfBurton hmm. I have this if i don't use the websockets tag while installing opensrf
13:09 nfBurton But my server uses Apache2-Websockets
13:09 robbiecalwls I am also using Apache2-Websockets
13:11 nfBurton There is a part in the OpenSRF installation that uses a tag --with-websockets-port=443  on step 5
13:11 nfBurton If you miss that you can't login
13:11 robbiecalwls let me try that.  Can I make that change manually or do I have to reinstall opensrf from scratch?
13:12 nfBurton I just did a reinstall. Doesn't take too long
13:12 robbiecalwls thanks BRB
13:12 jeff kmlussier: regarding bug 1777675, no. i'm not going to be able to accomplish what I had in mind there today. back to you!

13:17 Dyrcona robbiecalwls: If you use that websockets port option, you have to set up a proxy server for the websockets. nginx is recommended.
13:17 Dyrcona If you don
13:18 Dyrcona If you don't use that websockets port option, you need to make sure that your host is accessible on port 7682, and that the apache2-webosckets instance is running.
13:19 Dyrcona If you're using a self-signed cert, and you're connecting with Firefox, you have to accept the self-signed cert for port 7682 also.
13:23 robbiecalwls I previously tried using 7682, no dice and I'm using a signed cert
13:24 bshum Did you alter your SSL cert settings in the apache websockets to point at your installed signed cert too?
13:25 robbiecalwls trying to find instructions on installing the proxy now.  I wish there was a video to follow on how to do this step-by-step
13:25 robbiecalwls I did make those changes, the signed cert is showing when I load the login page
13:26 jeff not to distract from the current troubleshooting, but trying to understand: why would you find a video more useful than a document?
13:26 bshum Right, that's for the main apache instance, I can see that.  But you also changed the SSL cert references in /etc/apache2-websockets/apache2.conf that was copied into that config?
13:27 bshum And confirmed that websockets instance is actually running on your server
13:27 bshum "ps aux | grep websockets" or the like, right?
13:27 bshum Sometimes it doesn't start up right
13:27 bshum Due to config issues or complaints or ports being clogged up

13:28 robbiecalwls Sometimes there are important notes for noobs (like how websockets is going to be used) and the important of options like --with-websockets-port aren't explained well and frankly might over complicate documentation but might be helpful otherwise.

13:33 robbiecalwls fingers crossed.
13:37 nfBurton Some docs could definitely be clearer or exist at all. Especially for Developers/Sys Admins. There are alot of instances where it takes hours or days of digging or asking to find an answer.
13:38 nfBurton Just to add
13:38 Dyrcona nfBurton: Feel free to contribute documentation.
13:40 bshum Or suggest changes, and some of the rest of us can help to modify too
13:40 bshum Personally I think we could tighten up the instructions for websockets
13:41 Dyrcona Yes, definitely.
13:41 bshum Firstly by removing the word "optional" from the step
13:41 Dyrcona :)
13:43 * berick removed OPTIONAL in the websocketd branch, fyi
13:44 * Dyrcona has been meaning to try websocketd without a proxy.

13:55 nfBurton oh okay

13:56 nfBurton But to robbie's point. Docs are one thing but as you don't use the docs anymore, a video would maybe touch on things/show things a doc wouldn't I supppose
13:58 Dyrcona Well, that's assuming that the producer of the video thinks to cover all of those things.
