so in the name of fairness in the logs, pingest.pl was not the cause of my woes, but a poor choice in leaving pg_receivexlog running throughout the full upgrade, auth reingest, then pingest.pl |

it ran out of space which meant the master DB held onto the xlogs it was keeping for the backup process until its own disk was full |
