dbs: Yesterday, I started setting up an Evergreen YouTube account, which is linked to the Google Evergreen brand account you created. |
09:32 |
kmlussier |
dbs: It looks like the account owner is the only person who can add other managers to the YouTube account. Would you be able to add rhamby_ as an manager? |

Is this the correct channel to get help installing a new Evergreen server? |
09:34 |

09:36 |

thanks kmlussier! I'm installing EG 2.12.5, following the instructions from https://evergreen-ils.org/documentation/install/README_2_12.html#_configuration_and_compilation_instructions |

09:42 |
rkw |
ubuntu trusty |
09:42 |
cesardv |
rkw: yep I've seen that being caused by perl and related dependencies being slightly older than required by Evergreen (on wheeze at least) check you perl versions |
09:43 |
rkw |
cesardv: ok, will do. thanks |
09:43 |
dbwells |
rkw: Any chance you are running 32-bit? We need to tweak the configure line on our one lonely 32-bit install. |
09:44 |
Dyrcona |
rkw: IIRC, that is not Perl. It's not finding the C libdbdpgsql libraries, and on 14.04, that's not usually an issue, except possibly as csharp says, on 32-bit. |
09:44 |

dbwells: I am running 32 bit .... I could do 64, but chose 32 for some unknown reason |
09:46 |
rkw |
dbwells: is it better to choose 'server' over 'desktop' iso? |
09:48 |
dbwells |
rkw: 32-bit is okay, you just need to find libdbdpgsql.so. On my 32-bit system it is in /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/dbd/ |
09:48 |
Dyrcona |
rkw: Use the 64-bit server ISO, always. |
09:48 |
rkw |
dyrcona: ok, downloading it now....will be awhile |
09:49 |
dbwells |
rkw: I agree with Dyrcona's advice as the long-term solution, but if you just want to get it running ASAP, 32-bit isn't a big obstacle. |
09:49 |
rkw |
dbwells: I'd like to continue installing on my 32 bit server OS .... if only for the experience, so I will continue to try to resolve this on 32bit |
09:50 |
rkw |
dbwells: I have the libdbdpgsql.so in the same dir on my system |
09:51 |
dbwells |
rkw: Alright, you are probably close. Try adding --with-dbi=/usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/dbd/ to your configure command, then see if make is more happy. |
09:51 |
rkw |
dbwells: will do, thank you |
09:51 |
Dyrcona |
yeah, that looks right. |
09:52 |
Dyrcona |
Been a long time since I tried 32-bit and that was just to see if it would install. |
09:53 |
rkw |
Dyrcona: I'm new enough that the install experience will help, so like you, I just want to see if I can do 32-bit while the 64-bit downloads |
09:55 |
Dyrcona |
Last time I had a library issue, I just munged the makefiles. |
09:55 |
dbwells |
In my case, I fired up an older server a few months ago in laziness to do a test install, had no recollection it was 32-bit, then was majorly confused for longer than I care to admit :) |
09:57 |

I haven't installed on 14.04 for a while, either, for that matter. I'm mostly using Ubuntu 16.04 and Debian 8. |

Does bug 1703411 really affect Evergreen, too? I would think it pretty much only affects OpenSRF since that handles the XMPP layer. |

I strongly dislike having usernames and passwords being sent in plain text. I don't think that's a warm and fuzzy concern. |

Authentication should be encrypted, and in Evergreen it is. |
11:37 |

HTTP specification headers need to be changed to include a "dial-up" flag T/F |
11:42 |
dbs |
nginx + http2 makes TLS negotiation even less of an issue |
11:42 |
* Dyrcona |
has considered creating a browser called Paranoia that doesn't have any trusted authorities, remembers certs per domain, and tracks them. |
11:43 |
dbs |
(well, http2 really, nginx just does a nice job of making it easy) |
11:43 |
Bmagic |
Dyrcona: Just use IE if you want everything to be broken |
11:43 |
Dyrcona |
Bmagic: Have a look at the authorities that your browser trusts some time. You might be a little surprised. |
11:43 |
jonadab |
Dyrcona: You mean like the way ssh uses certs? Assume that in practice, attacks are very unlikely to happen the _first_ time you visit a site? |
11:44 |
Bmagic |
I've looked and I have been surprised! |
11:44 |
jonadab |
But if the cert changes, that's a cause for alarm no matter who signed it? |
11:44 |
jonadab |
And yes, the list of what authorities the major browsers trust is ridiculous. |
11:46 |
Dyrcona |
jonadab: It depends on the sites you're visiting and why. |
11:46 |
dbs |
dwgreen: We're using LetsEncrypt on almost everything except our EG instance, which has a wildcard from 2015 that expires next year... just in time for LE to start issuing wildcard certs |
11:46 |
Dyrcona |
There have been cases of spoofed Microsoft certs in the wild being used in attacks. |
11:47 |
* dbs |
heads off to a meeting |
11:47 |
dwgreen |
dbs: I have been keeping an eye on LE's wildcard certificates. We have close to 50 EZproxy instances we manage, and they would be perfect for the job... except I think LE plans to only make them for the apex domain, which won't work for us. |
11:48 |
dbs |
dwgreen: oh yeah, EZproxy is our other one! |
11:48 |
* dbs |
really out now |
11:48 |
Bmagic |
We switched to letsencrypt for EG, but we recently hit the ceiling for number of domains allowed to have letsencrypt (30). And instead of jumping through more hoops to get around that limit, we bought a wildcard |
11:49 |
* Dyrcona |
has experimented with creating an authority and signing his own certs. I trust myself more than anyone else. :) |
11:51 |
Dyrcona |
Fun thing about running your own authority, is you can sign user certs and allow access only to holders of those specific certs or certs signed by your authority. |
11:52 |
dwgreen |
Bmagic: Was that with using SAN certificates or just 30 different subdomain/certs? |
11:55 |
Bmagic |
I believe it was 30 different certs associated with one email |
11:55 |
Bmagic |
but SAN was a way around that |

ohiojoe |
yeah, even if there's some messiness, a major release is a good time to introduce such a change in the docs.. |
14:23 |
sandbergja |
kmlussier: I think just doing 3.0 docs sounds safer |
14:23 |
kmlussier |
+1 |
14:24 |
ohiojoe |
so, are we agreeing to change the structure starting with the 3.0 docs? |
14:24 |
jihpringle |
+1 |
14:25 |
kmlussier |
I don't think the 3.0 docs are added until the major release day, which is October 3. Maybe we could look at updating master now so that we have time to troubleshoot any issues that arise? |
14:25 |
sandbergja |
That makes sense. Switching it over would be a 3-step process: |
14:26 |
sandbergja |
1) Getting the new root_*.adoc files into master (these determine which content is in which books) |
14:27 |
sandbergja |
2) Updating the script on the production docs server to generate the new, reorganized manuals based on the root_*.adoc files |
14:27 |
sandbergja |
3) Lots and lots of cleanup :-) |
14:28 |
kmlussier |
sandbergja: I assume Robert hast to take care of #2? |
14:29 |
sandbergja |
kmlussier: I think so. There's a reorganized-documentation-generator script on the docs testing server that would just need a few modifications. |
14:31 |
kmlussier |
OK, so I guess we need to coordinate a bit to make sure he can update the script right after the new root file is added. |
14:32 |
sandbergja |
I believe that the current script would just ignore the new files, so it wouldn't be terrible if there were a lag between 1 and 2. |
14:32 |
sandbergja |
But doing 2 before 1 would cause problems. :-) |
14:32 |
sandbergja |
I'm wondering if 1) and 2) should be action items for me? |
14:33 |
ohiojoe |
that sounds good to me |
14:33 |
kmlussier |
And 3 should be an action item for the rest of us. :) |
14:33 |
ohiojoe |
I was thinking it sounds like an action item, and like something that only a few of y'all know what to do/how to do it |
14:34 |
sandbergja |
Maybe #3 could be coordinated in the wiki? |
14:34 |
ohiojoe |
#action sandbergja will coordnate getting the new root_*.adoc files into master |
14:34 |
dluch |
That's a good idea |
14:34 |
sandbergja |
The cleanup that I mean is stuff like "There is random administrator stuff in the middle of the circ manual; please move it to the admin manual" |
14:34 |
ohiojoe |
#action sandbergja will coordnate updating the script on the production doc server to generate the new, reorganized manuals based on the root_*.adoc files |
14:35 |
ohiojoe |
#action everyone will work on cleaning up the reorganized documentation |
14:36 |
kmlussier |
Should somebody take an action item to get that wiki page started? |
14:36 |

Yes, I think we covered that above when we talked about the web client documentation days. |

14:45 |
sandbergja |
I had a quick question about it |
14:45 |
ohiojoe |
please |
14:45 |
sandbergja |
I saw a Cataloging doc staff client rewrite mentioned in the 2.12 doc needs wiki page |
14:45 |
sandbergja |
Does anybody have details to share about this? |
14:46 |
sandbergja |
Especially, should others hold off on contributing cataloging-related documentation until this re-write is done? |
14:46 |
sandbergja |
akilsdonk: is this a project you are working on? |
14:46 |
kmlussier |
sandbergja: Remind me. What's the link for that page? |

14:48 |
kmlussier |
abneiman: Do you know anything about it? |
14:49 |
abneiman |
kmlussier: sorry, I don't -- akilsdonk would be the one to ask, but I don't think she's available right now |
14:50 |

hopes it means akilsdonk is doing all the cataloging docs for the web client. :D |
14:50 |
sandbergja |
abneiman: would you mind checking in with her? |

looking at them, with Christineb not here, that leaves just 4 and 5.. |

14:57 |

But I will take an action item to see if I can get ChristineB linked up to that channel. |
14:57 |

kmlussier: I think that your 3.0 video would be a good fit for Christineb's playlist too! |
14:58 |
sandbergja |
In the spirit of action item #4 |
14:58 |
ohiojoe |
Does that mean that 1 and 2 are complete, or just #2? |
14:58 |
kmlussier |
#1 hasn't been done. I think we should probably move the videos to the Evergreen channel before adding the link. |
14:58 |
kmlussier |
Also, please subscribe to the channel. We need 100 subscribers to get a custom URL. |

sandbergja kmlussier: we're getting ready to switch from docbook to asciidoc for our local docs and wondering if it's possible to get a copy of CSS style sheets used for the community docs and if so who I should be asking? |

Documenting for posterity... I just chased my tail for a bit trying to figure out why my Web client would only return a Forbidden. I had enabled Indexes for /openils/var/web, and that seems to have been the issue. By adding/removing that Option I can easily recreate/correct the problem. |
