Hello! My organization is setting up an instance of Evergreen to catalog our small library and we're having some server connection issues. I'm a librarian and not a tech so I'm a little lost, but the people who installed our server said it was probably an issue with the local network security. Is there anyone here who's had a similar issue or has suggestions for how I can fix it? Thanks! |
09:51 |
hbain |
Further details: I can login to the online portal but get a "Failed to load resource: the server responded with a status of 404 (Not Found)" error message and an endless loading bar when I attempt to search or register other users. The staff client requires an SSL exception but can access the servers. However, it consistently tells me that I don't have permission to create a workstation even when I attempt to login with the admin |
09:51 |
hbain |
We were able to override this once using "run as administrator" but don't seem to be able to duplicate it on other machines |

hbain: Are you able to connect to and search the catalog as a patron rather than a staff user? |
09:54 |
mmorgan |
That is, are your connection issues only related to staff use? |
09:57 |
hbain |
We don't have anything in the catalog yet--this project is starting entirely from scratch |
09:59 |
jonadab |
Yes, but the point of mmorgan's question was to disambiguate the cause of the problem. |
10:00 |
mmorgan |
Ok, can you get to the main page of the catalog, even if there's nothing to search? |
10:00 |
hbain |
Yes, I can |
10:02 |
mmorgan |
Ok. When you mentioned the "portal" before, was that the web based client at https://<servername>/eg/staff ? |
10:02 |
mmorgan |
Also, do you have the client installed on your workstation? |

Yes, I meant the web based client. I have also installed the staff client, but that's where I'm running into the issue of it insisting I don't have permission to register workstations |
10:12 |
kmlussier |
hbain: You said you received the permission message when you were trying to register the workstation as the admin user? |
10:17 |
hbain |
correct. I was able to eventually register one workstation by right-clicking the staff client and choosing "run as admin," but I haven't been able to duplicate that on any other computers |
10:19 |
kmlussier |
Also, if you had to add an SSL exception for the installed client because the server doesn't have an SSL certificate, I think that could be a problem for using the web client. I think you need to have a valid SSL certificate for websockets. But others here can speak more knowledgeably about that. |

hbain: I've never encountered permission issues when using the admin account, meaning the account that has the 'admin' user name. It's a superuser account and should automatically have permission to do everything. |
10:22 |
kmlussier |
I'm not sure what could be causing the problem. |
10:23 |
Freddy_Enrique |
could it be something relating to the instalation proccess? he said they began from scratch |
10:31 |
hbain |
We are in the process of getting our security certificate installed, so I know that's responsible for at least some of the problems. However, the organization that installed our Evergreen instance seems to think that it isn't responsible for all of them. I'm hoping to get the certificate installed asap, but I'm waiting on a different third-part tech group for that |

hbain: Is this the failure messge you receive when attempting to login: https://www.screencast.com/t/8tQw1MYo ? |
10:52 |
hbain |
Yes! |
10:55 |
mmorgan |
That was an attempt to login as a staff user that has permission to REGISTER_WORKSTATION, but no assigned Working Location(s). |
10:56 |
kmlussier |
mmorgan: Is there a different message if you just don't have the permission? |
10:56 |
mmorgan |
kmlussier is too quick! I was just about to say other situations could case the same message. |
10:57 |

If you mean the "organization" menu under the "Workstation" section of the staff client login screen, I don't see anything. The menu appears at the same time that the popup telling me I don't have permission to register a workstation does |
11:16 |
kmlussier |
hbain: OK, it should show earlier than that. After you enter your user name and password for the first time, you should get a red box around that Workstation area and the WS Name and Organization dropdown should appear. |
11:17 |
kmlussier |
If it's not showing at that step, there's a problem. It could be that your server admin made changes to the org tree without running autogen.sh. The org tree is where you identify the consortium, system, branch names for your system. |
11:18 |
kmlussier |
It could also be a problem with the way the server admin set up the org tree. We've seen problems, for example, where people made an org unit a child of itself. |
11:18 |
mmorgan |
kmlussier: hbain: My login attempt that produced the earlier screenshot behaved the way hbain described. |

hbain: You previously mentioned you were able to successfully login on one workstation. Are you still able to login on that workstation? |
11:26 |
hbain |
Yes. It seems to work for the most part . . . some things are still strange. It won't let me register other patrons, for example. I can navigate to the screen but it doesn't show all the fields and the ones it does show don't have text boxes |
11:27 |
hbain |
we just have a plethora of fun and interesting problems |
11:29 |
kmlussier |
hbain: Could you check with your server admin to see if they have run autogen.sh? The patron registration problem is another symptom of that problem. If they have, I would also be interested in seeing what the org tree looks like. |
11:30 |
hbain |
I will when I can--he's out of the office until mid-afternoon. But I'm glad to have a specific thing I can ask him about! Thank you! |
11:31 |
kmlussier |
hbain: Even if he ran it when he did the initial installation, it needs to be run again whenever he adds/removes a library, changes the name of a library, etc. So it get runs a lot in the early days of configuration. |

!.... is it too expensive? |
12:29 |
jonadab |
Freddy_Enrique: Panera's a somewhat upscale restaurant that caters to upper middle class, and yes, $3 for a cup of hot chocolate is pretty much highway robbery. |
12:30 |
jonadab |
Especially if it's made from powder-mix and hot water, which at a restaurant it probably is. |
12:33 |
Freddy_Enrique |
ooohh.... I see. |
12:35 |
jonadab |
(Good hot chocolate is made from hot milk, baking cocoa, sugar, marshmallows, and maybe one flavoring, such as mint or cinnamon.) |
12:36 |
jonadab |
(If you make it at home, the milk is the expensive part, and $3 will buy a whole gallon of that.) |

Freddy_Enrique |
OMG, you are one of mine |
12:36 |

12:36 |

Starbucks is another place that would probably charge you $3 for a cup of hot chocolate. |
12:38 |
kmlussier |
jonadab: I've never done well with the baking cocoa method of making hot chocolate. I tried it last winter, and my kids told me to never do it again. |
12:38 |
jonadab |
Huh. |
12:38 |
jonadab |
It works well for me. |
12:39 |
jonadab |
You do have to get the chocolate-to-sugar ratio in the right general ballpark, of course. |
12:39 |
hbain |
Bittersweet chocolate makes a better base than cocoa powder. Not as chalky |
12:39 |
* jonadab |
now wonders if it matters whether the baking cocoa is dutch process or, umm, whatever the other one is. |
12:40 |
hbain |
natural process is the other one |
12:40 |
jonadab |
(Ours is never labeled one way or the other here, because Ohio. It's just baking cocoa.) |
12:40 |

it shouldn't matter much for cocoa--most of the difference is when you bake with it |

Given all of the great work that's gone into tagging this week, I sure hope our eventual replacement for Launchpad has a way to import those tags. |
12:55 |
jonadab |
Are they roughly equivalent to Bugzilla keywords? |
12:55 |
* jonadab |
thinks of all bug tracking systems in terms of how they differ from Bugzilla. |
12:56 |
kmlussier |
jonadab: I'm not too familiar with Bugzilla. But they work like most tags do. You apply free-form tags to a bug to help categorize the bug and make it more findable. |
12:57 |
jonadab |
Hmm. I think Bugzilla tags are technically freeform, but installations usually maintain a list of tags that they use and what they mean. |
12:59 |
kmlussier |
jonadab: Yes, we have some tags that become 'official' meaning they will be suggested to users as you start to type the tag. |
12:59 |
kmlussier |
We don't have any documentation on what the different tags mean. I was thinking of creating some a couple of weeks ago, but then decided to wait to see if we make a switch. |

Hi! Can somebody help me refresh my catalog display to display the correct book cover? |
16:45 |
Ryan_M |
Accidentally typed in the wrong ISBN, and the automated process found a matching item, for the wrong ISBN, and pulled that cover into the system! |
16:47 |
kmlussier |
Ryan_M: If you're logged into the staff client, there's a link to clear your added content cache. |
16:47 |
Ryan_M |
I am in the Staff client, where is that link, and will that fix it both in my machine AND on the web catalog? |
16:48 |
kmlussier |
Ryan_M: Retrieve the record in the staff client. It's in the upper right, under the options to print, email, etc. |
16:49 |
Ryan_M |
in the "Admin" stuff? |
16:49 |
