09:59 kmlussier I loaded the sprint 4 branch yesterday and it looks good so far. I'm going to poke at it a little more today before merging it.
09:59 kmlussier miker / gmcharlt : Do you see any reasons why I should hold off on merging it? Do you expect there to be a lot of flux in the branch today?
10:00 miker kmlussier: some, I expect, actually. I think gmcharlt's attacking some things
10:01 kmlussier miker: OK, maybe I'll hold off until next week then.

10:48 Bmagic Anyone else have issues with diacritics in SIP? Or barcodes with plus signs?
10:49 Dyrcona Bmagic: Yes, there are Launchpad bugs assigned to me about the diacritics.
10:49 Bmagic ah, I thought there was something about this
10:50 Dyrcona https://bugs.launchpad.net/evergreen/+bugs?search=Search&field.assignee=jstephenson
10:50 Dyrcona I'm not sure how plus signs cause a problem, but it's obvious how pipe would.
10:56 Christineb joined #evergreen
10:58 csharp hmm - I'm looking at bug 1286340 and it seems like a "deleted" column is what people probably want (for accountability purposes) on all the relevant acq objects (PO, lineitem, lineitem_detail, po_item, etc.) - is there a reason I wouldn't want to do it that way?
10:58 pinesol_green Launchpad bug 1286340 in Evergreen "Please add a feature that will allow end-users to delete Purchase Orders" [Wishlist,Confirmed] https://launchpad.net/bugs/1286340
11:02 kmlussier csharp: Just checked with the NOBLE acq person, and that makes sense to use. It's a nice safeguard in case somebody accidentally deletes a PO.
11:04 csharp kmlussier: thanks!
11:11 Dyrcona Bmagic: I'm using http://git.evergreen-ils.org/?p=working/SIPServer.git;a=shortlog;h=refs/heads/user/dyrcona/lp1463943_encoded_response in the meantime.
11:11 Bmagic interesting
11:12 Dyrcona Well, wait a minute.... That may be the wrong one.
11:13 Dyrcona This ought to do it: http://git.evergreen-ils.org/?p=working/SIPServer.git;a=commitdiff;h=2e2fe894b144862017b9722ca771a167ccf44190
11:13 Dyrcona That whole branch might work.
11:14 Dyrcona But, I'm actually using just the one commit.
11:14 Bmagic Dyrcona: I am on the phone with a customer running a bibliotheca self check machine
11:15 Dyrcona Bmagic: The problem has mainly manifested itself with call numbers(!) and the software used by the delivery company. They use SIP2 to look up destinations for barcoded items.
11:15 Dyrcona At least for me (at MVLC and at C/W MARS).
11:17 Bmagic When the machine asks SIP about an item where the title contains a diacritic. SIPServer simply doesnt respond
11:17 Dyrcona Bmagic: That sounds like another bug....
11:18 Bmagic I cherry-picked 2e2fe894b1448 and then 7810ae0993129e - still having an issue responding with diacritic titles
11:19 Dyrcona Bmagic: lp 1628995
11:19 pinesol_green Launchpad bug 1628995 in SIPServer "SIPServer can incorrectly calculate output message length, which can lead to clients hanging" [Medium,New] https://launchpad.net/bugs/1628995 - Assigned to Jeff Godin (jgodin)
11:24 Bmagic darn, that didnt fix it either
11:25 Bmagic SIP doesnt have a response at all. The query is type "17" and the response should be "18" but I get zilch in the log
11:26 Dyrcona Bmagic: Do you see the request in the log?
11:26 Bmagic yes, the request is there
11:27 Dyrcona OK. And nothing about the response in the SIP log?
11:27 Bmagic right
11:27 Bmagic I am checking the other opensrf logs
11:28 Bmagic I wonder if there is an issue with Encode.pm in 16.04?
11:28 Dyrcona There is.
11:28 Bmagic oh, lol
11:28 Dyrcona That is mentioned in lp 1542495.
11:28 pinesol_green Launchpad bug 1542495 in SIPServer "OpenILS::SIP::clean_text() can crash" [Undecided,Confirmed] https://launchpad.net/bugs/1542495 - Assigned to Jason Stephenson (jstephenson)
11:29 Bmagic Do I have a bigger issue running my DB server on 16.04 ?
11:30 Dyrcona No, I don't think so.
11:31 Dyrcona Pg 9.5 should be OK at this point.

11:52 Bmagic Dyrcona: alright, so, it's just the SIP code then. I cherry-picked those two branches with no luck. Is there some Evergreen code required as well? I get this in oils_sip.log
11:52 Bmagic Cannot decode string with wide characters at /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/perl/5.22/Encode.pm line 241.
11:53 Dyrcona Bmagic: You can try jeff's branch: http://git.evergreen-ils.org/?p=working/SIPServer.git;a=shortlog;h=refs/heads/user/jeff/lp1628995_fix_output_message_length_calculation
11:53 Dyrcona That should work in the iterim.
11:54 Bmagic I cherry-picked that one too :)
11:54 Dyrcona Ah, yeah....
11:54 Bmagic maybe I can't do both?
11:55 Dyrcona Nah. There's no branch to fix the decode issue.
11:55 bmills joined #evergreen
11:56 Dyrcona I don't know if anyone besides you is running 16.04 in production...
11:56 Dyrcona Go through the OpenILS::SIP::* modules and remove the decode calls.
11:57 Bmagic k, ill try that
11:57 Dyrcona It appears that recent versions of Encode don't like calling decode on already decoded strings. Allowing that was considered a bug.
11:57 Bmagic I could always install a vm on 14.04 just for sip
11:57 Dyrcona Yeah, that would work, too.
11:57 Bmagic of course, Evergreen code is running on 16.04 as well....
11:58 Dyrcona Right, but I've exercised much of the rest of Evergreen on 16.04, and haven't found any double decode issues.
11:58 Bmagic that is a relief
11:59 Dyrcona My understanding is the strings are being decoded by Evergreen backend calls and handed to the SIP module, which tries to decode it again.
12:00 Bmagic for example this line? $text = NFD(decode_utf8($text));
12:01 Dyrcona Yeah, that decode_utf8 is part of the problem.
12:02 Bmagic so, blanket the whole thing, removing all calls to decode_utf8. got it
12:05 Dyrcona I'd try that. You might find you need to put some back, but I don't know for sure.
12:05 Dyrcona I've not tested SIP extensively on 16.04, but I suppose that I should.
12:06 Dyrcona Trouble is, my day job has me doing other things, and I'm not that motivated to continue working on Evergreen in all of my free time. :)
12:06 dbs Bmagic: I can tell you where we have clean_text for our many french users and items - although we're on ubuntu 14.04, there were clean_text() calls we had to add, not take away
12:06 Bmagic Dyrcona++
12:06 Dyrcona dbs: Yeah, but that won't help with decode on Perl 5.20+.
12:07 Dyrcona Adding clean_text to the AUTOLOAD functions is a good idea.
12:08 Bmagic I wonder if this Encode.pm issue is part of another problem we are getting reports about. Merging records
12:09 dbs Dyrcona: yeah, I really don't know about Perl 5.20.
12:09 Dyrcona Bmagic: It is worth looking into.
12:09 Dyrcona Merging records is one thing that I know I did not do on 16.04.
12:10 dbs is it clear that the same problem does not impact perl 5.18? https://bugs.launchpad.net/evergreen/+bug/1542495 mentions testing with 16.04 and Jessie, nothing about ubuntu 14.04
12:10 pinesol_green Launchpad bug 1542495 in SIPServer "OpenILS::SIP::clean_text() can crash" [Undecided,Confirmed] - Assigned to Jason Stephenson (jstephenson)
12:11 Bmagic well, I removed that single call to decode in Sip.pm and boom, it's working
12:12 Bmagic All of the other modules have no mention of decode
12:13 dbs well that's good!
12:13 Bmagic yep, on the right track
12:13 Bmagic it would be great if I didnt have to install all of this on 14.04
12:13 Dyrcona Bmagic++
12:14 * Dyrcona gets something to eat.
12:15 Bmagic I am concerned about some issues lurking in Evergreen code though. We are getting reports about errors when merging records. Error in bibs_abreast.js, merge_records(): TypeError:robj is null
12:33 berick 'robj is null' usually translates to 'something died on the server'
12:58 kmlussier 'something died on the server' would be a more useful message.
12:58 Dyrcona kmlussier: The client code isn't that smart. It just knows that robj is null. It has no idea why.
12:59 Dyrcona But yeah...
12:59 Dyrcona Useful error messages are not our strong point.
13:04 afterl joined #evergreen
13:07 Bmagic ok, here we go. The merging issue is a timeout. The database is still working on it asset.merge_record_assets ran for as many as 158 seconds
13:08 Dyrcona Bmagic: Yeah, that can happen with lots of copies and so on.
13:13 Bmagic Dyrcona: Exlain analyze gives me "Index Only Scan using record_entry_pkey on record_entry bre (cost=0.43..8.70 rows=1 width=8) (actual time=135911.461..135911.505 rows=1 loops=1)"
13:14 Bmagic This seems to affect DVDs more....
13:15 Dyrcona Are they trying to merge 158 records into 1?
13:17 Bmagic just two bibs
13:17 Bmagic that is the result of SELECT asset.merge_record_assets("bre".id,'1257328' ) AS "count" FROM biblio.record_entry AS "bre" WHERE "bre".id = '1932036';
13:19 Dyrcona Dunno. I've not looked at that much.
13:20 Bmagic but I merge two other "books" and it finishes in a split second
13:20 Dyrcona I really think it has to do with number of copies and/or parts.
13:24 * Dyrcona isn't finding much useful on Lp.
13:28 Bmagic thanks for your time Dyrcona. It helps to bounce ideas around
13:28 Bmagic Dyrcona++
13:29 Bmagic I am going through each query in the merge sql function to find one that would be slow
13:35 terran joined #evergreen
13:37 Bmagic asset merge - moving the title holds takes 6443.882 ms per hold
13:39 jeff well that's just unfortunate. OpenSRF Router used a source TCP port that Apache then wanted to use.
13:40 dbs jeff: oh that's interesting
13:41 Dyrcona jeff: Sounds like a TCP stack issue...Race condition?
13:41 jeff The port in question is fairly fixed externally, but that terminates at nginx.

13:44 Bmagic Dyrcona: it's the reporter_hold_request_record_trigger that is hogging the time! Which was changed/new in 2.11. I see it in 2.10.7-2.110
13:45 Dyrcona Bmagic++
13:45 Bmagic that table used to be a view
13:45 Bmagic now it's a table with triggered updates
13:47 jeff I can change the port that Apache listens on to a less problematic port.
13:48 jeff And have the nginx<->apache traffic go on that port, while the external<->nginx traffic stays on the "problematic" port.
13:49 jeff "problematic" port is above 50000
13:50 Dyrcona jeff: Guess I misunderstood. Thought this was an automatically allocated outgoing port.
13:51 kmlussier joined #evergreen
13:51 jeff I could play with net.ipv4.ip_local_port_range also, but I think changing the port as bound by Apache is going to be the lower-impact change.
13:53 jeff Dyrcona: This was the OpenSRF Router making an XMPP connection to ejabberd using an ephemeral source TCP port that happened to then conflict with the port that Apache was trying to Listen on for a special-purpose virtualhost.
13:53 Dyrcona I see.
13:54 dbs Bmagic: sounds like that table needs some indexes
13:55 Bmagic maybe.... ah, yeah, probably at the very least an index on id lol
13:57 Bmagic oh, wait, sorry, target
13:58 graced Two minute warning to the EOB meeting

14:34 graced I'll take that as a no.
14:34 rhamby Someone else said it in an unrelated context and several of us in outreach independently thought of it for outreach when we heard it.
14:34 kmlussier Anyway, the other activity we'll need to start working on soon is the annual report. rhamby is looking for photos now that can be used for the report. If anybody has any, please share them with him.
14:34 graced rhamby++
14:34 rhamby I can't remember who said it though the context was explaining to someone that Evergreen wasn't the name of a vendor.
14:35 graced Oh right... I think it was Jason?
14:35 afterl Which?
14:35 graced S?
14:35 afterl We have like 17 of them
14:35 rhamby graced: that seems right
14:35 graced It's true!
14:35 rhamby Dyrcona = this Jason
14:35 rhamby But JBoyer Jason was there too
14:35 graced Well, regardless, Dyrcona will now get the blame
14:36 kmlussier That's all I have for Outreach.
14:36 graced and phasefx: the other Jason was also there. But I do think it was Dyrcona
14:36 graced Any questions/comments for Outreach?

14:37 graced miker? kmlussier?
14:37 kmlussier graced: Who do you want to go first?
14:38 graced kmlussier you go ahead
14:38 kmlussier Not much to say about release 2.12 yet. I do have a proposed schedule
14:38 kmlussier #link http://markmail.org/message/4jmxknraen6k7nqr
14:39 kmlussier I'm putting my thoughts together over the next week about what needs to be done to get the web client ready for some production use in the 2.12 release.
14:40 graced kmlussier++
14:40 tspindler Not that I want to open a can of worms, is it definitely 2.12 just for my own notes, I don't want to argue about version numbers
14:40 tspindler kmlussier++
14:40 terran kmlussier++
14:40 kmlussier tspindler: Yes, it's definitely 2.12. We settled that question at the hack-a-way.
14:40 JBoyer tspindler, fear not, we had that argument at the hackaway. 2.12 it .s
14:40 gmcharlt yesitis212wewantnodebateitisdefintely212
14:40 gmcharlt *cough*
14:40 graced well, that woke some people up ;)
14:41 kmlussier We're looking at a fall 2017 release for 3.0. :)
14:41 terran See what you missed, tspindler? :D
14:41 graced miker: your release mgr update?
14:41 tspindler it sounds good to have missed it
14:41 tspindler like another event that shall remain nameless
14:41 miker for my part, gmcharlt cut the build (as buildmaster) yesterday
14:42 gmcharlt (and dbwells)
14:42 miker a few bugs fixed since .0, so, go us
14:42 terran gmcharlt++ dbwells++ miker++
14:42 miker sorry, yes, I'm crossing streams
14:42 miker dbwells cut my 2.11.1
14:42 miker dbwells++
14:43 graced any questions for miker?
14:43 miker not much else to say... :)
14:44 graced all y'all++
14:44 graced moving on then
14:44 graced #topic New Business
14:45 graced #topic EOB Hack-a-way meetings
14:45 graced I see value in continuing to meet mid-cycle, and at the Hackaway seems convenient for most. I think planning for a 1-day session with better a/v support for those who can’t come due to obligations or distance would be enough. Thoughts?
14:45 miker big +1
14:45 afterl +1
14:45 miker I think it's very useful
14:45 tspindler +1
14:46 collum +1
14:46 terran I'd prefer if it didn't conflict with dedicated Hack-a-way time. Perhaps the day before, or an evening, or Friday afternoon.
14:46 graced terran: yes, I think the day before when most folks are travelling is ideal.
14:47 graced Then those who need to/want to stay for the Hackaway or part of it can do so
14:47 rgagnon Better a/v would be helpful, it was sometimes hard to hear the proceedings.
14:47 collum better_av_than_collums_laptop++
14:48 graced better planning overall :)
14:48 rfrasur agree with terran about not conflicting
14:48 rfrasur and, of course, the AV.
14:48 graced Okay, let's take that idea and plan with it.

14:49 collum The day before sounds perfect.
14:49 graced #agreed Continuing mid-cycle meetings coinciding with the Hackaway is a good thing - just not during the hackaway time.
14:49 rfrasur +1
14:50 graced Which reminds me - does anyone object to the EOB meeting at the Evergreen Conference being held on Wed morning?
14:50 rfrasur what constitutes morning?
14:50 afterl Fine with me
14:50 tspindler None as long as I know in advance.
14:50 graced It's just about the only relatively conflict free time we'll get for a few hours of meeting.
14:50 graced Morning being "before the developers really get going in the Hackfest" so 8-10am?
14:50 rgagnon Advance notice for arrangements, please.
14:50 graced 9-11?
14:51 afterl 9-11
14:51 terran That's fine with me
14:51 rfrasur 9-11
14:51 afterl 8-10, ha!
14:51 rfrasur afterl++
14:51 * graced is an early bird
14:52 graced okay, I'll make a note to the local conference committee that we'll need some space to meet that morning.
14:52 rfrasur well, it's more of a "if one is traveling" thing
14:52 graced #agreed plan for the EOB meeting at the Evergreen conference to be Wed am. exact time TBD
14:53 graced Any other new business?
14:54 graced hearing none...

14:56 rfrasur Hmm, it could be a competition

14:57 rfrasur and a free round of beer for the team with the most representatives in attendance
14:57 terran Can we get opposing team shirts?
14:57 kmlussier Free beer? I wonder how hard it would be to recruit a bunch of Kathys.

14:57 rfrasur kmlussier++
