Is there any way to show lost non-cataloged items in the items out display in the xul staff client? I couldn't find a bug about it? There is a button to show non-cataloged items, but not for the bottom "Other/Special Circulations" pane. |
12:39 |
jeff |
non-cataloged circulations don't have a concept of "lost" or even "overdue" or "long overdue". |
12:39 |
jeff |
since they have no barcode, they are not checked in. |
12:40 |
mmorgan |
Stompro: Or do you mean precataloged items? |
12:40 |
jeff |
the non-cataloged mechanism is for tracking usage, not tracking items. |
12:40 |
Stompro |
jeff, mmorgan I think I am using the wrong term. |
12:41 |
Stompro |
I'll re-search for pre-catalog related bugs |
12:41 |
Stompro |
Thanks |
12:41 |
jeff |
pre-cataloged items should behave the same as normal items in most ways, especially related to lost. one challenge is that you're probably not going to have a price to bill the patron unless you've created pre-cats during a migration, external process, or have a default item price established. |
12:41 |
jeff |
Stompro: what are you investigating? |
12:43 |
Stompro |
A lost Pre-cataloged/uncataloged/not cataloged item isn't showing up for a patron in the items out screen. When I look at the item in item status it does show that it is checked out to the patron. |
12:44 |
jeff |
was the pre-cataloged item created from within the staff client, or as part of a migration / external process? |
12:45 |
Stompro |
jeff, in the staff client, although it does have a strange copy location of migrations. |
12:46 |
jeff |
I can confirm that there does not appear to be a general "pre-cat items don't show properly after being marked lost" issue in 2.10.x |
12:47 |
Stompro |
jeff, thanks, I'll keep looking at it after lunch. |
12:48 |
mmorgan |
Stompro: Have you set the org unit settings for Items Out display of Lost items? |
12:48 |
mmorgan |
ui.circ.items_out.lost |
12:50 |
jeff |
Stompro: if xact_finish has been set on the transaction, it would no longer appear where you're looking. |
12:53 |
mmorgan |
jeff: good point. I wonder if xact_finish would be set if there is no amount to bill the patron? |
12:54 |
jeff |
by default it would not automatically be set, no. |
12:54 |
jeff |
but if the patron was billed and paid, it would be. |

jeff, mmorgan , it looks like the transaction has been finished, It must be because there was no amount, so it went to create a zero bill and then cleared it out so it doesn't show up. Makes sense, why care about something that is worth nothing. The barcode was also scanned incorrectly, so when it came back the item was never checked back in. |

precats-- |
14:51 |
mmorgan |
misscans-- |
14:52 |
Dyrcona |
mmorgan: Indeed. |
14:52 |
jeff |
other than "it's off by default and can be changed by the user", what reasons do people have for not using "strict barcode"? |
14:52 |
Dyrcona |
Poor little copy with barcode of "3" had so many circulations.... |
14:53 |
Dyrcona |
jeff: Checksums or the lack thereof, IIRC. |
14:53 |
Dyrcona |
And, yes, non-cataloged items. |
14:54 |
mmorgan |
Strict barcode enabled still allows accepting the barcode anyway. |
14:54 |
jeff |
mmorgan: right... in its current implementation, at least. ;-) |
14:56 |
jeff |
we have a generation of item barcodes that do not have a check digit, so we modified strict barcode to permit those (X digits starting with one of the following numbers) in addition to the usual luhn check digit on every item since then. |
14:57 |
jeff |
i've considered putting strict barcode checks behind an org unit setting for more uniform enforcement. |
14:58 |
jeff |
but for one thing, we'd need a non-acq temporary barcode method, since right now i think staff are using some pretty ad-hoc methods, none of which would have a check digit. |
14:58 |
mmorgan |
I have often wished I could see if strict barcode was turned on for a transaction, but there's no way to see that. An org unit setting would provide more control. |
