Ubuntu: Making Linux suck as much as Windows! |

Dyrcona, How have they managed that? (Also, the Windows version matters a bit, I could believe they're pulling it in a Win10 direction, but if you're thinking Vista or 8 then shut yo' mouf.) |

JBoyer: I've had issues with wifi with Ubuntu on both of my laptops. Just now, when tsbere was just looking at the access points, I lost my wifi connection and the widget froze. |
09:37 |
tsbere |
I wasn't even changing settings, just looking at the configuration to check what language to use to look something up in the docs. |

Plus, systemd.... |

I do seriously dislike some of the networking changes between 12.04 and 14.04, so that's a real +1 from me. :-/ |
09:38 |
Dyrcona |
If I didn't need Ubuntu or Debian to build tarballs, I'd switch to FreeBSD on the laptops. |
09:38 |
Dyrcona |
It hasn't been much better with 15.10, either. |
09:39 |
Dyrcona |
This laptop is still 14.04 and my other is running 15.10. |
09:40 |
Dyrcona |
Anyway, I got lazy and rather than dig and figure out that I needed to restart unity-panel-sevice, I rebooted, just like Windows. |
09:45 |
Dyrcona |
Of course, if the wifi itself had crashed, restarting the panel would not have helped. |

That's the only way I've found (in my admittedly limited checking) to apply networking changes. Do Not Want. |
09:46 |
Dyrcona |
JBoyer: I've never had to reboot to apply networking changes on Ubuntu. |
09:47 |
Dyrcona |
I could have restarted the wifi services, but like I said, I didn't feel like poking and prodding, so I just restarted. |
09:47 |
Dyrcona |
The wifi has never been all that stable on this laptop, though it got a lot better in the office with the new access points. |
09:48 |
JBoyer |
That's why I qualified my complaint. :) on 12.04 a networking restart would take care of everything, on 14.04 they finally completely disabled that, and I've not had good luck with the ifdown -a ;ifup -a method. I'm sure it's handled automatically when done through the UI, but I don't run Linux on anything but our servers. |
09:49 |
Dyrcona |
JBoyer: I've not had problems with ifdown or ifup. |
09:50 |
Dyrcona |
I usually do only the interface that I'm concerned with, or I use ifconfig to make the changes and it happens immediately. |
09:52 |
JBoyer |
I haven't done anything with it since December, but at the time I was not having a lot of luck. I was also making a lot of changes at the same time and may have been doing something wrong. (I was also automating a lot of it, and only getting involved by hand when things went wrong...) |

Well, since I'm still doing everything in /etc/networking/interfaces, I guess it's time to do some learning'. |

On a more on-topic note, I notice that we have not heard back from our friend who was going to port Evergreen to OpenBSD. |
10:03 |
Dyrcona |
If someone wants to front me some decent hardware, I could do that. :) |
10:08 |
jeff |
what, you were planning on porting to openbsd running on an E25K or something? :-) |
10:09 |
Dyrcona |
Well, I've got a spare box with an Atom D525 and 2GB of RAM..... ;) |
10:09 |
Dyrcona |
But, seriously, I think finishing the FreeBSD port and then working on OpenBSD would be a good way to go. |
10:23 |
Dyrcona |
So, I'm looking at writing a Perl test for a change to abort transit behavior. |
10:23 |
Dyrcona |
I wonder if we want to renumber the names of some of the test in live_t? |
10:23 |
Dyrcona |
kmlussier asked about this before. |
10:24 |
Dyrcona |
We've got 3 tests numbered 10- and 2 that are 12-. |
10:24 |
kmlussier |
+1 to renumbering |
10:39 |
Dyrcona |
Tests are often more complicated than the code changes that they are testing. |
10:49 |
Dyrcona |
Speaking of tests: Bailout called. Further testing stopped: cannot test opt-in unless enabled in opensrf.xml |
10:50 |
Dyrcona |
Maybe that should fail a bit more gracefully, with the remaining tests being optional? |

Dyrcona: ITG's XpressCheck works |

well that's a little silly. a system has the option for multiple queues, with a mandatory default queue. so far, so good. nice and flexible. UI for interacting with the contents of that queue has views for "All", and subviews for any custom queues, but no way to see just the default queue. |
13:36 |
jeff |
You either see it in the All view mixed with the contents of all other queues, or you don't see it at all. |
13:37 |
jeff |
Also, there is no indication in the All interface of which queue each item is in. |
13:37 |
Dyrcona |

kmlussier: re badge weights |
13:47 |
kmlussier |
miker: Thanks. So, basically, the effect would be changing where it might rank in the search results, without actually changing the popularity score? |
13:50 |
miker |
kmlussier: no ... the weight of the badges has a direct effect on the popularity score of the record. the score is search specific and query dependent, remember, because the search org defines which badges are included in the popularity score for the record for that search |
13:50 |
kmlussier |
Ah, ok. |
13:51 |
kmlussier |
This is a very complex piece of development. Every time I think I understand it, I don't. |
13:51 |
miker |
the popularity score is not a static attribute of the record, it's contextual WRT the search location ... and, strictly sepaking, can be told (through a search filter) to consider only some badges |

csharp, do you know if anyone at PINES is running reports that look at the Dewey ranges? We've got a couple simple reports that try to do circ counts by range and they take over 4 hours to run. Not good. :-/ |
16:34 |
kmlussier |
miker: Ah, ok. The on-line one is uris' only, "bib has attributes and copies" is copies only, and then "bib has attributes and copies or URIs" is a combination of the two? |
