08:59 miker kmlussier: here's the metarecord lightning talk I've been looking for: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pSlJr8L8dpA&t=46m39s
09:09 rhamby miker: do you think metarecord displays should be the default in the catalog?
09:10 miker rhamby: I think it could be, yes. or at least more useful than it is today
09:10 Dyrcona joined #evergreen
09:10 miker I'd like to see the reverse, too, where you can go from a record to a useful MR display
09:11 miker that could come first as a POC, and have that display logic used to inform a rewrite of the MR result list
09:15 rhamby I like the idea of a metarecord display being default search response.  That brings a lot of issues up but I think it would be interesting to explore.
09:16 kmlussier miker: Thanks! I'll take a look.
09:17 kmlussier I would love to see MRs get to a point where it could be the default search.
09:18 kmlussier @eightball will gmcharlt give the community a shiny new release as a St. Patrick's Day gift?
09:18 pinesol_green kmlussier: It shall be.
09:19 rhamby last thought before focusing on other things: if results are presented well I think it has the potential to address speed, not system speed but getting results they want to them faster speed because scrolling through results and opening multiple records can be a big slow down in user experience
09:20 maryj joined #evergreen
09:26 kmlussier For those following along, the catalog higlighted in that presentation is at http://catalog.library.nashville.org/
09:29 dbs fwiw, the "group by link to external ID (such as oclc work entities)" suggestion I made for search yesterday was effectively meant as a more intentional metarecord approach
09:30 yboston joined #evergreen
09:35 mllewellyn joined #evergreen
09:36 kmlussier dbs: Do you think we would see more accuracy in our grouping of records if we used the work entities?
09:38 jeff they would be differently inaccurate. ;-)
09:45 rhamby dbs: I assumed so.  I don't think I said so but I like that idea as well.  I think libraries will want options to use methods to controlled sets for matching as well as others that would be happy with the low effort approach of let the system guess based on bib data.
10:00 jeff Occasionally I think to ask this, and I should probably ask it on the list: Does anyone have any SIP2 clients that require error correction be enabled?
10:06 miker jeff: we've many that require the opposite... :)
10:07 jeff This is good!
10:07 jeff :-)
10:10 jeff SIP3 drafts remove error checking completely. Looking at bug 1542495 had me thinking "wouldn't it be nice to rip that out now?" again. :-)
10:10 pinesol_green Launchpad bug 1542495 in Evergreen "OpenILS::SIP::clean_text() can crash" [Undecided,Confirmed] https://launchpad.net/bugs/1542495
10:36 Dyrcona My understanding is that SIPServer only turns on error checking if the client requests it.
10:36 Dyrcona Not that that helps much.
10:39 jeff Dyrcona: well, not exactly... but that's another bug. :-)
10:40 jeff But whenever touching something that has potential to impact error checking, I'm increasingly tempted to just rip it out, rather than test it.
10:49 Dyrcona I'm pretty sure that we have clients that do error checking. Whether or not that can be turned off is a different question.
10:50 gmcharlt ditto
10:51 * Dyrcona just wishes there was a decent standard for this stuff, and no NCIP2 does not count!

11:15 Dyrcona rhamby: Congrats!
11:15 jeff Dyrcona: the standard is not the implementation. ;-)

11:20 rhamby jeff: that was my first day with ESI.  :)  It's been a good fit.  I have plenty to learn but looking forward to it.
11:20 Dyrcona jeff: A standard can go a long way to clarifying things so that different implementations are compatible.
11:20 jwoodard You know it was 80F yesterday....
11:21 rhamby Dyrcona: I still believe happiness comes from blocking all SIP ports.  I refuse to call it a standard.

11:24 kmlussier My karma was for the new position. I'm a little late

11:34 csharp Bug 1526547
11:34 pinesol_green Launchpad bug 1526547 in Evergreen 2.8 "Overdues adjusted via lost (or long overdue) processing get an incorrect note ("VOIDED FOR BACKDATE")" [Undecided,Confirmed] https://launchpad.net/bugs/1526547
11:41 Dyrcona Speaking of SIP/SIP2 being different, we have to rename a server because of changes we're making to email and other services.
11:41 Dyrcona They expect sip.domain.tld to be the telephony end point, so we're changing it to 3msip2.domain.tld.
11:42 bmills joined #evergreen
11:42 Dyrcona It's fun contacting all of the vendors, particularly when you are not their customer.
11:42 * csharp saw another "SIP" mentioned during a Code4Lib presentation last week - I nearly  choked
11:43 csharp "another" =
11:43 csharp not SIP2 and not telephony :-/
11:43 tsbere TLA Overload.
11:45 jeff TLAOMUJN will solve everything.
11:45 jeff Three Letter Acronym Overload Mitigation Using Java-like Namespaces
11:45 jeff org.ietf.standards.sip
11:46 jeff com.mmm.standards.sip
11:50 jeff those are just convenience aliases, though. the actual underlying namespaces are much larger, and typically require that you enable jumbo frames to avoid fragmentation across the wire.
11:51 jeff csharp: i seem to recall recently having the "oh no, another 'SIP'" conversation recently, but I don't remember what it was regarding. Do you?
11:53 tsbere Off the top of my head I know about telephony SIP, 3M SIP, and "Sustainable in Practice" I think...and I seem to recall that there is something about physical connectors too.
11:53 tsbere The last one though may have the P doubled

13:03 JBoyer A quick sanity check: if I set the internal flag ingest.skip_search_indexing and the like, will all of that processing be completed by a later reingest of the bib (by using pingest.pl, for instance), or do more specific steps need to be taken?
13:03 JBoyer We're running into additional parallel load collisions.
13:05 JBoyer Set them to true, that is. Then set them back to false after the load.
13:06 miker JBoyer: a subsequent reingest will catch them
13:06 Dyrcona JBoyer: Most likely. Are you running into collision with browse indexes, or do you know?
13:07 JBoyer Certainly with the browse index, I'm just assuming that disabling them all is just a good idea if I have to disable one.
13:07 Dyrcona JBoyer: Yes, it won't hurt, and it will speed things up during the load.
13:07 JBoyer I know we've talked about this because you do something similar, but that's not one of the three flags we're switching off. I may have miscommunicated something at some point. (it's been a bit.)
13:07 miker JBoyer: browse and attributes have unique constrains that can block others ... search and facet don't, so you shouldn't have to disable those
13:08 miker constraints, even
13:08 Dyrcona JBoyer: The browse index didn't exist the last time that I did a parallel record load.
13:08 * Dyrcona makes note of that for future reference.
13:09 jeff bug 1066326 is probably useful background
13:09 pinesol_green Launchpad bug 1066326 in Evergreen "Allow (in practice) parallel ingest again, post-browse-indexing" [Low,Fix released] https://launchpad.net/bugs/1066326
13:09 Dyrcona The parallel ingest script, does the browse in one process, but parallelizes the others.
13:09 csharp jeff: I'll have to look back at the c4l presentations to remember what it was
13:09 JBoyer Dyrcona: Oh, I think it was the metarecord mapping that we discussed last.
13:09 jeff csharp: at your earliest convenience, please!
13:09 jeff csharp: *kidding*
13:09 miker JBoyer: that's good to do after, with the separate sql script, indeed
13:10 Dyrcona JBoyer: Yeah, I turn that flag off do the quick metarecord map script after, but like I said, it has been a while.
13:10 JBoyer miker: Thanks for that about which index catches what, I might leave those on and then tell pingest to ignore them.
13:11 Dyrcona miker seems to suggest that attr ingest shouldn't be parallelized, but I've not encountered a problem with that.
13:11 Dyrcona I could be misunderstanding, too.
13:11 miker well, if you have a lot of records, you may be safe
13:11 Dyrcona heh
13:12 JBoyer several million :). But I assume the danger comes from needing to insert a "new" attribute value that could in theory collide?
13:12 miker also, are you doing these inside a single transaction (or several large ones)?
13:12 miker JBoyer: zackly
13:12 JBoyer I'm not too up to speed on the attribute tables.
13:12 Lertze joined #evergreen
13:12 miker it's only the uncontrolled attr table
13:12 miker but with lots of records, you probably have all the strings you need already
13:12 JBoyer miker: multiple concurrent transactions. That's why we're hitting it. This xact commits a new value, the next one blows up trying to do the same.
13:13 JBoyer (to the browse index, that is)
13:13 miker right
13:13 miker that's often good to do in a separate pass later
13:13 miker as you know ;)
13:14 JBoyer Maybe I'll look at cleaning up and genericizing our approach for the 2017 conf, if I can keep all of the details straight. :)
13:14 JBoyer By then I'll have likely asked in here enough that a cleanroom implementation wouldn't be that hard to throw together in a couple hours, heh.
13:16 abneiman joined #evergreen
13:22 csharp jeff: I can't find it, but I know it was during a presentation where a woman referred to something in their finding aid (or whatever it was) saying "we call these 'SIPs'" and I died a little inside :-)

13:28 montgoc1 joined #evergreen
13:29 JBoyer miker: Out of curiosity, is the internal flag to disable uncontrolled attrs ingest.disable_metabib_rec_descriptor? I don't see anything that looks like it would apply.
13:30 miker JBoyer: not specifically uncontrolled attrs.  I /think/ you can disable all attrs?  Maybe not, though.
13:30 miker you can definitely reindex only attr data, though... so it's half way there if nothing else ;)
13:31 terran joined #evergreen
13:32 JBoyer attributes aren't referenced in any of the flags, I just thought I'd check before digging around in the stored procedures. :)
13:41 JBoyer For those logging along at home: yes. The flag ingest.disable_metabib_rec_descriptor controls record attribute ingest. Minor drift in terminology over the years. :)

14:33 kmlussier Yes, thank you graced for sharing my bday news with the Board. I'm forever grateful.
14:34 graced We like celebrations.
14:34 kmlussier The Outreach Committee has submitted an application for meeting space at ALA. I requested Saturday afternoon. I'll post more information once we have a confirmed time slot.
14:34 kmlussier We talked about our activities for other conferences, particularly with the idea that we still may want to consider exhibiting at a conference at some point. rfrasur and rhamby volunteered to work on a conference kit with printables that can be used by Evergreeners who are attending conferences and want to promote Evergreen at those conferences.
14:34 kmlussier However, this doesn't help with the funding question.
14:35 kmlussier We're not sure a direct fundraiser, like the one we tried last year, is the most effective means for raising money for exhibits if we want to continue to show a presence at conferences.
14:35 kmlussier During the Board meeting at last year's conference, there was some talk of possibly looking at membership fees for Evergreen to help support community activities. I don't think it needs to be talked about today, but it is an idea raised among the Outreach Committee members as one way to support promoting Evergreen at conferences.
14:35 kmlussier We also talked about pulling together an annual report to be completed before this year's conference. We may have a survey going out to help us gather some statistics for that report.
14:35 kmlussier lso, I plan to write up a press release this week (tomorrow?) on the 2.10 release. I'll share it with gmcharlt and the Board before sending it out.
14:36 kmlussier Sorry, that last sentence was supposed to start with 'Also.'
14:36 kmlussier That's our report.

14:37 kmlussier Well, there are one or two people in this channel who aren't connected to me on FB or Google+. I think
14:37 graced Okay, if there are no questions for kmlussier?
14:38 kmlussier I would love it if the Board could take up a larger discussion on the funding questions at some point.
14:38 graced #action kmlussier will write up a press release this week (tomorrow?) on the 2.10 release and share it with gmcharlt and the Board before sending it out.
14:39 graced #action Board to add Outreach funding to possible EG conference meeting agenda

14:40 graced #info Update from the Site Selection Committee for 2017
14:40 graced #link  http://georgialibraries.markmail.org/thread/pi6y4qpxm4x7wf7g
14:40 graced The site selection committee has closed the proposal period.  We are evaluating the proposal and will be prepared to make a recommendation very soon!
14:40 graced Are there any strong feelings on how site announcements should work? Should it be kept a big secret and announced at the current conference?  Or just announced via email when the decision is made?
14:41 abneiman I'd say email
14:41 afterl I think email too
14:42 montgoc1 I'm indifferent, although it could be a perk of being a conference attendee...you get to hear it first.
14:42 afterl You know how secrets go though ....
14:42 graced true
14:42 abneiman But there could also be an announcement (by EOB or Conference Committee or whomever) at the conference.
14:42 graced Yes we generally do announce it (again) at the conference during the EOB update
14:42 afterl Yes, yes
14:43 graced Okay, I think we should stick with the status quo then.  I'll write it up in our best practices doc that will soon exist.
14:43 yboston graced++
14:44 graced #action graced to write up best practices doc for site selection and include direction to ensure email and conference announcements.
14:44 graced thanks to sherbertbc, afterl, and rfrasur for doing all the heavy lifting on site selection
14:45 graced Okay, moving on
14:45 graced #info EOB nominations & OpaVote
14:45 graced As we did last year, we plan to use OpaVote for the EOB voting.  I don’t believe we received any complaints about the service or about the “approval style” voting we used (as opposed to the STV we had used previously).
14:45 sherbertbc I wasn't involved
14:45 graced sherbertbc, sorry... I was thinking of the next agenda item
14:45 graced my brain is getting ahead of me!
14:45 sherbertbc graced: ;)
14:46 graced So, EOB nominations and OpaVote.
14:46 csharp last year was fine as I recall - I didn't have or hear any complaints
14:46 abneiman likewise
14:47 graced (thanks to the people named above for the work I credited them with for site selection when it was really for EOB nominations)
14:47 graced Are there any questions about the voting process?
14:47 graced jump in if you think of one...
14:47 yboston none from me
14:47 sherbertbc what is the closing date for folks to sign up to vote via the survey?
14:48 montgoc1 None here.
14:48 graced 3/24 I think
14:48 * graced checks
14:48 kmlussier It's a standard vote this time, right? Where all of a person's votes get counted?
14:48 graced kmlussier - yes, approval voting like last year
14:49 kmlussier graced: Thanks for confirming. I couldn't remember which one was used last year.
14:49 sherbertbc I ask because we have only 30 ppl signed up so, compared to 64 by closing last year
14:49 graced sherbertbc: 3/25 5pm PT
14:49 graced There will be a rush next week I bet.
14:49 sherbertbc shall we send a wee reminder?
14:50 afterl Yes, I would
14:50 graced indeed
14:50 graced sherbertbc: are you volunteering?

14:51 graced #action sherbertbc will send a reminder for voting registration and nominations for EOB on Monday
14:51 graced #link https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Approval_voting
14:51 graced For the record ^^
14:51 afterl thanks for that
14:51 graced So, for OpaVote based on their pricing structure and we may incur up to $10.00 in costs.
14:51 graced https://www.opavote.com/pricing
14:52 graced If we don’t think $10 is too steep, I’d like to move that we vote to approve up to $10, if necessary, for the EOB elections to be held on the OpaVote platform.
14:52 abneiman second
14:52 graced Discussion? Questions?
14:53 yboston none from me
