16:35 jcamins Anyone here have any resources for learning how to use Linux that they particularly recommend?
16:38 jonadab Dunno.  I started out by multi-booting on my home computer, after a while found that I spent more time in Linux than DOS much less Windows 95, and eventually stopped multibooting and just ran Linux.
16:38 jonadab But that took a couple of years.  So I don't really know how to learn it all at once.
16:40 jonadab Also, there are probably much better resources now than then.  But I don't know what they are really.
16:50 jcamins jonadab: yeah, I'm trying to come up with resources for a developer who doesn't know anything about *nix or system administration and would like to learn.
16:51 jcamins I thought about saying "it's very similar to *BSD, once you get past the lack of a ports system and the weird init infrastructure," but decided that would be less helpful than not saying anything.
17:45 jonadab Yeah.  Actually, if you want Linux with a ports system, there's Gentoo.
17:52 jcamins On the other hand, if you want to compile everything, you might as well just download FreeBSD.
17:54 jonadab Yeah.  I used FreeBSD on my home computer for a couple of years.
17:54 jonadab Switched back when sarge came out.
17:54 jonadab Because I was tired of recompiling Every Single Thing Ever every time I wanted to upgrade anything.
17:55 jonadab That would probably be less of a problem on a server.
17:55 jcamins Yeah, that's why I stuck with Ubuntu after my wife started using it and I borrowed her computer.
17:55 jonadab Also, I've heard they've done good things with the pre-compiled packages system these days.  It was in its infancy back then.
