07:40 gmcharlt jeff: remingtron: I've converted github.com/evergreen-library-system to a organization
07:40 gmcharlt as far as notifications are concerned, it looks like there are a couple options
07:41 gmcharlt 1. folks can join the organization and watch the repos, optionally using the organization membership to help filter the emails
07:41 gmcharlt 2. we create a robot github account that exists for the purpose of receiving notifications
07:42 gmcharlt and put a mailing list behind it, or use one of the existing ones

10:01 csharp jeff++
10:01 RoganH jeff++
10:01 jeff this has come to mind as i've fielded private emailed questions and thought about responding "i'm not going to respond privately, but will post some information about this later this week"
10:01 RoganH Or, a related problem: you find a fix but it's for an old version of a dependency and now it doesn't work anymore but they didn't mention versions so you don't find that out until you've gotten even more frustrated.
10:01 jeff "thought about responding" because i haven't actually responded in any way yet (sorry, folks)
10:02 tsbere I find that I end up in loops of posts referencing each other with no useful information on a way too frequent basis, though. >_>
10:02 * csharp wonders if he's getting the same privately emailed questions as jeff ;-)
10:02 gmcharlt jeff: and some folks respond to private pings with "please ask your question publicly, as you're likely to get a faster response"
10:03 gmcharlt and I see the value of such a policy
10:03 csharp gmcharlt++
10:03 bottotr "questions"  …nearly 2 decades old, but just as true:  http://perl.plover.com/Questions.html
10:03 * tsbere does that when random people send him private questions
10:03 gmcharlt but to push back a bit -- I think we have to acknowledge that it can take a while to convince folks to take the risk of asking out loud
10:03 csharp I tend to push people toward the lists when they email me questions
10:03 tsbere non-random people I vary. A lot of those I answer directly. ;)

10:15 csharp ah - yeah - might look like a DoS attack
10:23 jeff quite a few folk on irc from the conference / hotel wifi. I've contacted Freenode via e-mail after in quiring in #freenode, hopefully we can get an exception to usual limits and people won't be turned away if they try to connect. :-)
10:24 * csharp creates an "Awesome" checkin modifier
10:25 Dyrcona Some of our members have talked about doing the awesome box.
10:25 Dyrcona I should find out if any have.
10:25 csharp I know our libraries' patrons would love it
10:25 eeevil awesome box is awesome ... he said without irony
10:25 RoganH Actually, I could really see the value of doing that and then having the catalog able to flag "awesome" items in opac searches.
10:26 csharp seems like a simple change from my naive perspective
10:26 eeevil RoganH: optional relevance component. that'd be easy-peasy
10:26 RoganH especially if they could choose to do that for "locally awesome" items.
10:26 RoganH I would think so too.
10:26 eeevil (relatively speaking, obv ... it's still search)
10:26 RoganH right
10:26 rfrasur We're going to do it.  We just need a box.  Or...some place with a sign...or yeah.
10:26 rfrasur But we're going to do it.
10:26 kbutler ditto rfrasur
10:27 kbutler we were stymied by the awesomeness of Somerville PL's awesome box.

10:27 csharp kbutler: whoa!
10:27 alynn26 We talked about doing the Awesome Box.  Need to check on it.

10:27 rfrasur linked data leads to clouds....and then you get sheep...and then you can spin yarn, and then you can knit.  Librarians full circle
10:28 gmcharlt kbutler: how does their circ desk support that degree of awesomeness without collapsing?
10:28 dagreen North Carolina wants Awesome Box.
10:28 csharp gmcharlt++
10:29 rfrasur kbutler: seems that I've seen that awesome box
10:29 kbutler gmcharlt: we could not figure it out ourselves. It certainly collapsed us.
10:29 kbutler rfrasur: it was in library hotline a while back
10:29 Dyrcona At least one of our members is doing the awesome box already.
10:31 collum A TARDIS box.  http://bit.ly/1hGZQoj
10:32 Dyrcona I think jeff is hammering at some experimental awesome code. :)
10:32 jeff heh
10:32 rfrasur collum: that's where I saw it.
10:33 collum Looks great.  I may have to get to my workbench this weekend.
10:33 jeff i've registered for an awesome box (the web page), now i'm just thinking about ways to do the patron "this is awesome" both in-library and in-catalog.
10:33 jeff as well as treat awesomebox as a form of added content in the catalog.
10:33 kbutler Oh, my apologies to Brookline. I knew it was somewhere in MA.
10:34 mllewellyn joined #evergreen
10:34 jeff having a second dropbox that gets "this is awesome" treatment automatically is interesting.
10:34 jeffdavis RFID would make it pretty easy.
10:34 kbutler Yeah. We weren't sure whether awesomeness should be ephemeral/temporary or recorded forever.
10:35 jeff and this dovetails a little bit with some conversations i've been having with regard to sharing statistical information between (to start) Evergreen libraries
10:35 tsbere From the "in Evergreen tracking" point of view, add a column to action.circulation that gets set when a checkin happened with the right modifier, perhaps?
10:36 tsbere with the circulation column we could then also indicate in circ history "you found this awesome!"
10:36 kbutler ooh
10:36 kbutler that sounds like the seed for an amazon-esque recommended titles thing :)
10:37 tsbere heh, "only keep awesom circ history"
10:38 tsbere er, awesome
10:38 jeff anything along those lines, though i was thinking more along the lines of action.circ_stat_cat_entry or the like, or metadata on a list item. :-)
10:38 jeff mllewellyn: hello!
10:39 Dyrcona I think it would be nice to have the awesome checkin modifier so you don't have to scan again on the awesome.io site.
10:39 Dyrcona Then, some kind of "awesome" page or search in the catalog.
10:40 * jeff nods
10:41 mllewellyn jeff:hello!
10:41 jeff while still allowing for integration back into example.asesomebox.io, because there's some value to be had in seeing your library on the map, etc.
10:41 tsbere A button in checkouts or circ history to report something was awesome might be good too. At least one of our libraries has most of their checkins go through an AMH, removing the "box" aspect that is needed right now...
10:41 rfrasur Um, I think makerspaces are fairly irrelevent to the future of libraries.  Just saying.
10:42 Dyrcona rfrasur: I don't know, but I don't work in a library.
10:42 jeff rfrasur: old thinking: "we have a contract with an ebook vendor! we're relevant again!" -- new thinking: "we bought a 3D printer and hung a sign saying 'maker space', we're relevant again!" :-)
10:42 rfrasur Jeff: yes.

10:42 rfrasur jeff++
10:43 kbutler jeff++
10:43 rfrasur I've got nothing against them, per se...but to think that's going to "fix libraries" is kinda silly from my perspective.
10:43 * bottotr has managed to stay out of trouble by suppressing his comments about makerspaces
10:43 rfrasur bottotr: I've said the things...it's not much trouble.  Of course, I pick my audience.
10:43 Dyrcona :)
10:44 * jeff wonders is dweinberger is aware of the work dbs has been doing on linked data in Evergreen catalogs
10:44 rfrasur Keeping in mind that I WANT a 3D printer.
10:44 bottotr rfrasur: unfortunately, they tend to be popular with donors
10:44 Dyrcona Is dbs here, yet? I haven't seen him.
10:44 bottotr very buzz-word'ish
10:44 collum Haven't libraries always done makerspaces.  Is this just a trendy name.
10:45 rfrasur bottotr: yeah, that's true.
10:45 alynn26 rfrasur: I do to, but not for public use.
10:45 mllewellyn I'mwaitignfor a Star Trk replicator
10:45 * collum may misunderstand makerspaces.
10:45 jeff Dyrcona: bshum said something about dbs arriving Friday
10:45 csharp a lot of this talk fits with dbs's efforts with schema.org methinks
10:45 rfrasur collum: you're not misunderstanding the concept.
10:45 jeffdavis collum: similar principles, different domains, IMO.

13:40 hbrennan The mailing list is wonderful, but spontaneous learning happens in IRC
13:42 dweinberger What happens on the mailing list?
13:42 kmlussier dweinberger: Also, welcome to our humble channel.

13:45 hbrennan The mailing list is mainly used for non-tech questions, also great for surveying a large group on their thoughts
13:45 hbrennan Seems to have the most non-Evergreen people on the mailing list, often asking questions when they are considering switching
13:46 montgoc1 joined #evergreen
13:46 hbrennan also for non-Evergreen questions, one yesterday was asking about PC reservation software... Guess they just wanted to ask Evergreeners because we're trustworthy? :)
13:47 dweinberger It's a great way to see what the community is like. I hope you send prospects to the IRC as well.
13:47 collum The mailing lists seem to also be used by those intimidated or unfamiliar with IRC.
13:47 bottotr the mailing list also gets a lot of newcomers, that haven't yet learned our IRC ways

13:48 dweinberger Note that I realize that I have violated the first rule of IRC: Lurk before speaking. But I really did intend to just ask a couple of questions.

13:55 rfrasur oh, it's important to note that typing [off] turns off the logging for an individual comment.
13:58 jeff lots of irc activity. :-)
13:58 csharp hopefully there will be fewere kpac/craftsman comparisons after bshum, afterl, and terran's presentation

14:05 bottotr it was such a neglected child
14:06 mrpeters is there some new magic to make newly loaded item records opac visible?  I tried SELECT asset.refresh_opac_visible_copies_mat_view(); but still getting no results for the items on records I know they are attached to.  Org/Copy Loc are both opac_visible as well.

14:20 bottotr jeff:  phasefx says you should style your receipts with comic sans
14:21 jeff we found the secret to removing MS Comic Sans from our 3M SelfCheck interfaces.
14:22 * bottotr had never considered an <img> in a receipt template.
14:22 hbrennan I need to ask Jason for his slides... full of html and css, perfect examples
14:23 bottotr much easier than the printer's stored bitmap
14:24 hbrennan I think I saw him type in a url to get to his presentation, that will be a must
14:25 jeff bottotr: you can also: -moz-transform: rotate(90deg);-moz-transform-origin: bottom left;

14:26 hbrennan Oh goodness, you can get rid of the 11:59pm due date time
14:26 jeff yep!
14:27 mmorgan1 Does that work for the patron birth date, too?
14:28 jeff like %DATE_FORMAT(%shelf_expire_time%,%F)% to have your hold slips have a shelf expire time that looks like 2014-03-27
14:28 hbrennan I've never see a time for DOB
14:28 mrpeters jboyer-isl does some bad ass things with reciept templates
14:28 jeff we don't have receipts that include DOB, so i've never used it.
14:29 jeff rather, i've never had a need to format a DOB on a receipt.
14:29 bottotr we substr our shelf_expire_time, so staff just see a MM/DD  as a "pull" time
14:29 jeff we use Pull after: %DATE_FORMAT(%shelf_expire_time%,%F)%
14:29 jeff so it's: Pull after: 2014-03-27
14:30 mrpeters http://loquaciousthesis.blogspot.com/ -- jboyer-isl's reciept stuff
14:30 hbrennan conversation in the room about putting advertisement on receipts - interesting idea
14:30 jeff though at main branch, they just pull all of the holds of a certain color

14:38 jeff additional information for some of those new or new-again to irc and #evergreen -- some quick tips on IRC itself: http://wiki.evergreen-ils.org/doku.php?id=community:irc-quick-start
14:38 hbrennan jeff: I need to learn more about simple ways to do self-checkout.. We don't have funds for a fancy system, but we think we can pull it off with just a PC
14:39 jeff and a not-complete list of people on #evergreen and their names and affiliations: http://wiki.evergreen-ils.org/doku.php?id=community:irc_channel
14:39 hbrennan The part I can't figure out is the desensitizing
14:40 jeff hbrennan: if you have a need for desensitizing, your challenge is greater.
14:40 hbrennan jeff: Darn. That's what I thought
14:41 lfloyd joined #evergreen
14:41 hbrennan Do magic mats exist so if patrons are near the self-checkout the items automatically desensitize because of proximity
14:43 jeff if you're using EM style "thunk!" sensitization / desensitization, the book needs to be quite close, and other non-book things need to be quite far away.
14:44 jeff one of my favorite check-in tricks on our old 3M EM "thunkers" was to place some paper clips on the surface of the unit and then scan a barcode.
14:44 jeff (the paperclips would go flying)
14:44 hbrennan We have one of those thunks, and a few small portable bars
14:44 hbrennan But they are super magnetic and have already collided with other things just from staff use... one even chipped the metal
14:44 * jeff nods
14:44 jeff one option is to stop using the security entirely.
14:45 hbrennan And de-strip 50,000 items? :)
14:45 jeff most of the "thunkers" have the ability to check items "in" our "out". you could leave the strips in the materials but just check them all "out" (unsecured, ok to go out the door)
14:45 jeff OR turn off the gates.
14:46 hbrennan jeff: Duh. Jeez. :)
14:46 jeff which is more along the lines of what i would recommend because it's easier to "reverse" the decision by turning the gates back on, and no need to touch every item.
14:46 hbrennan Good thinking
14:46 hbrennan There's still a way to get around our gates anyway, and any time it does beep it's always staff fault
14:47 jeff however!: know that your patrons may trip OTHER gates elsewhere if your items are still "armed"
14:47 hbrennan That happens all the time with incoming patrons
14:47 collum That's possible even if they are not armed.
14:47 jeff heh
14:48 collum The gates themselves are usually a deterrent.
14:48 tsbere I have bought things at a local store and tripped the gates in the library (before said library turned off their gates, anyway)
14:50 jeff i don't have direct experience with hacking on the EM-style security units since we no longer use them (moved to RFID), but I know some people on either the code4lib and/or koha lists have at least TALKED about ideas in terms of hardware.
14:50 jeff one approach: self check unit "thunks" the item if it's the right SIP material/item type and if it successfully checked out.
14:51 jeff another option: patrons check items out, then scan them again on a different unit, where the item status and type is polled and checked out items are "thunked"
14:51 jeff the second approach is used by low-volume single item things like libraries that offer checkout via a mobile app.
14:52 jeff you check the item out on your phone, then you pass it over the security pillar and it gets cleared to leave (because it polls to ensure that the item is checked out in the ILS)
14:54 jeff how in the world did i walk into an interest group and walk out with an action item?
