10:19 sovello hello!
10:20 phasefx sovello: hi :)
10:20 sovello anyone out there to share their experience on evergreen for colleges and universities!
10:20 rfrasur sovello: hey there :-)
10:20 * rfrasur is a public librarian...sorry.
10:20 sovello phasefx: hi!
10:21 phasefx sovello: in addition to asking here, I would definitely hit up the mailing list for wider reach
10:21 rfrasur phasefx++
10:21 sovello waw, thanks. am setting up myself there too!
10:21 sovello am from Tanzania!
10:22 phasefx coolness.  welcome :-)
10:28 rfrasur dbwells (Calvin College) would probably be a good person to talk to...hmm...and...dbs (Laurentian University) or they might be able to connect you with someone.

10:33 rfrasur It's official.  If I never have to fire anyone ever again, I'll be okay with that.
10:34 graced rfrasur: yeah, but sometimes people need firing
10:34 rfrasur I know...and I also think they think that I like it.
10:34 * rfrasur does not
10:34 * rfrasur does not at all
10:34 graced but it's always awful - even if they deserve it
10:35 graced if you start to like firing people then there is something wrong with you
10:35 rfrasur that's good to know.  thank you.
10:35 sovello thanks for the pointers
10:36 graced sovello: Eastern Oregon is also an academic library on Evergreen
10:36 rfrasur sovello: good luck :-)  Also, just as a note, today is Columbus Day in the U.S. so there may be fewer people available today.  Many institutions are closed today.
10:37 collum I believe it's also Canadian Thanksgiving, so probably the same situation in Canada.
10:37 graced sovello: and the University of Prince Edward Island.
10:38 rfrasur collum++ #didn't know that.  Thanks :-)
10:38 graced collum++
10:44 * collum saw an article about Canadian Black Friday in the news that a certain retailer is trying to start.
10:48 RoganH rfrasur: isn't it technically Columbus Day Observed and Saturday was Columbas Day?
10:49 rfrasur RoganH: I have no idea to be honest.  I don't celebrate it...and we don't celebrate it...and yeah.
10:49 * rfrasur just goes by Google calendars.
10:49 * RoganH goes by the library board's calendar of open and closed dates, everything else revolves around that
10:50 rfrasur Same here.  It's not in our policies and by-laws.
10:52 sovello thanks for today. expect more questions from this side as the hacking continues!
10:52 rfrasur sovello++ #welcome and looking foward to it
10:52 sovello thanks everyone. I have noted it is a different community above the rest i have visited before.

13:52 RoganH lol, thanks
13:57 rfrasur Hah.  The theme for this "Library Camp" is doughnuts.
13:58 gmcharlt rfrasur: bacon-wrapped ones?
13:59 rfrasur Hmm, the illustration is a little ambiguous.
13:59 rfrasur They have faces though...so I can't imagine why there wouldn't be bacon as well.
13:59 rfrasur (sounds like a C.S. Lewis rip off - "Til Donuts Have Faces"

14:04 RoganH mmmm bacon
14:09 jeff rfrasur: did I miss some very recent news about melcat, or was that just out of the blue? :-)
14:09 rfrasur just came through Facebook.
14:09 jeff rfrasur: oh. facebook. i see it now. :-)
14:36 RoganH has anyone here done any canned sql reports for staff doing historical circulation analysis by author?
14:37 rfrasur So, I thought I'd share this here since y'all will acctually understand it.  EI is down right now running a dedupe script so that libraries that are open are using the standalone interface.  So, I was at the circ desk when someone came in wanting to renew a book, and I mentioned that it'd be okay to run it in the standalone client because even if there's a collision, I'll see it and fix it tomorrow.  Well, staff member
14:37 rfrasur said "well, I ran one through earlier and it seemed to work fine."  So, I thought she meant she'd been trying the server connection and it went through there (and I was going to be mad), but no....she'd done it on standalone.  So, I explained that anything will check out/renew/wash your dishes on standalone because there's no communication with the server.  She looked at me blankly, nodded...and I hung my head and came
14:37 rfrasur back to my office.
14:38 rfrasur RoganH: I haven't...but it'd be fun to try...but I'm wondering if you could.
14:38 RoganH rfasur: this is why library admins should be allowed to have wet bars in their offices
14:38 rfrasur RoganH: Yes...if only on Mondays....err...scratch that.  Everyday including Sundays.
14:39 RoganH rfrasur: I'm too lazy to not prefer to reuse good code if I can rather than write it from scratch
14:40 rfrasur Me too.  Though it's not lazy.  It's efficient.
14:40 rfrasur I just know in the reports interface...and you probably have more access to that...you can only use one source, and I think the info you'd want there would be from two sources...
14:41 rfrasur but maybe not
14:41 * rfrasur hasn't done much using the bib source
14:41 RoganH I'll be honest, I can use the reports interface but I have to think about it.  I mostly use sql.
14:41 gmcharlt rfrasur: then there's the scenario where online circulation works perfectly when the main catalog is offline -- due to somebody not noticing that they were connecting to the test system
14:42 rfrasur gmcharlt: please never tell my staff there's more than one server.
14:42 * rfrasur has visions of mushroom clouds
14:43 RoganH rfrasur: so .... no staff development day discussion of load balancing and bricks?
14:43 gmcharlt rfrasur: let's just say that we now will consider turning off a test system temporarily at appropriate times to avoid asploding heads
14:43 RoganH rfrasur: we could explain round robin database setups to them :)
14:43 rfrasur no....not this staff.  They're great, but technology is perhaps not their greatest area of interest and expertise.
14:44 rfrasur gmcharlt++
14:44 rfrasur RoganH: we could.....we shall not
14:44 gmcharlt rfrasur++
14:44 RoganH I was talking with a consultant recently about troubles staff have with technology recently and he said something like "stupid librarians" and I looked at him and said "I'm a librarian."
14:44 * rfrasur is REALLY looking forward to the collision report tomorrow.
14:44 RoganH He nearly chocked himself backing up after saying "REALY?!"
14:45 rfrasur RoganH: hehe - that would have been fun.
14:45 RoganH I hate that stereotype, it's like 'women are bad at math.'
14:45 remingtron joined #evergreen
14:46 RoganH Now, humans are confused by technology, that's probably closer to truth.
14:47 rfrasur I'm glad most of the librarians I "hang out with" aren't very stereotypical.  I also REALLY like math....even if some of the abstract stuff is...abstract.
14:47 * rfrasur thinks math is some of the best stuff in the world.
14:47 rfrasur And, yes, humans are confused by lots of things.
14:51 rfrasur (like why it's important to report facilities issues and not "round off" you work time)
14:59 * rfrasur moves on to pondering the Amish and computer classes.
15:27 * rfrasur wonders why people buy Kindle Fires

15:37 dbwells senator: If you happen to get a chance, please take a look at bug #1239822.  I am cutting RC right now, but we upgraded production already over the weekend, and this came up today.
15:37 pinesol_green Launchpad bug 1239822 in Evergreen 2.4 "Integrated subscription editor tries to make giant dropdown, fails" (affected: 1, heat: 6) [High,New] https://launchpad.net/bugs/1239822
15:38 senator heh!
15:38 senator will do
15:38 senator i remember fixing this once in a totally different, not-serials interface
15:39 senator i had though the way i did that should apply to cases like this too, but will check it out
15:39 senator oh, well you have a solution already too
15:40 jeff Hrm. fieldmapper.standardRequest seems to be able to get into a state where none of oncomplete, onerror, ontransporterror, nor onmethoderror will fire.
15:41 jeff Testing in both xulrunner and Firefox
15:42 jeff My test is to force a user edit save to fail by creating a usrname collision.
15:42 jeff (which isn't handled in register.js, and I was trying to add handling)
15:44 senator jeff: so the error is a DATABASE_QUERY_FAILED event?
15:44 dMiller joined #evergreen
15:45 senator i would expect oncomplete to fire for that
15:45 senator and if openils.Util.readResponse(r) is called where r is the argument of that oncomplete handler, you'd get an alert dialog
15:45 senator at least, this is what i'd expect
15:45 jeff right. at the http layer, it's 200 OK, but the translator response is an osrfMethodException wrapped inside and osrfMessage
15:51 rfrasur Does the phrase "atmosphere of currency" sound like I'm talking about money?
15:51 senator yes
15:51 rfrasur bah.  thank you.
15:51 senator if that's not what you wanted, maybe immediacy ?
15:51 rfrasur close...but not the right nuance
15:52 senator mmm. you want up-to-date, but in a noun?
15:53 rfrasur I want up-to-date as a noun...but also dynamic...but not in a whiplash kinda way
15:53 senator tricky
15:54 gmcharlt following the current mode?
15:55 rfrasur trends? (oy...that word)
15:56 * rfrasur throws the whole thing out
15:56 eeevil rfrasur: shift that paradigm and synergize!
15:56 * rfrasur dies of catchphrasitis
16:00 rfrasur Hah!

16:02 senator rfrasur: list of responsibilities for a job opening?
16:02 rfrasur long range plan
16:03 rfrasur I'm trying to turn the "just make everything work all the time" feedback into something that looks like a document.
16:03 senator ah
16:04 * gmcharlt had a scary moment where I thought that bit rfrasur had quoted was part of the commit message
16:04 rfrasur gmcharlt: muahahahahah!
16:05 rfrasur all the things....working....all the time.  It's the best commit ever.
16:06 gmcharlt rfrasur++
16:06 dbwells gmcharlt: yeah, I tried to split it into multiple commits, but it was just too hard ;)
16:06 rfrasur It's like the god particle...in code.
16:07 senator from bosons import higgs
16:07 rfrasur senator++
16:10 eeevil things just got heavy in here...
16:10 rfrasur eeevil++
16:10 rfrasur best comment of the day
16:10 * eeevil loves a good higgs pun
16:11 rfrasur yep...and that was a good one.
16:17 jeff senator: it appears that onmethoderror will fire, but only in the staff client. also, "onerror" is not (always?) a less-specific handler for method errors.
16:19 senator hrm. at least onmethoderror should work then for your cases of catching an event in the patron editor... odd
16:19 jeff it does. my testing was incomplete.
16:19 jeff i was updating my earlier assertion.
16:20 jeff it works, but not in Firefox -- just in the staff client. i suspect I'm running into broken multipart as an issue, which is known and fixed.
16:20 jeff so, probably-mostly mystery solved.
16:21 dbwells berick: If you get a chance, I just posted an acq bug, bug #1239837.  It is pretty simple, I think, but was causing us some grief today.
16:21 pinesol_green Launchpad bug 1239837 in Evergreen 2.4 "Undefined variable prevents quick PO creation" (affected: 1, heat: 6) [High,New] https://launchpad.net/bugs/1239837
16:21 * dbwells heads out for a bit, will be back
16:33 mrpeters left #evergreen
16:34 jeff yeah, confirmed. it was multipart breaking.
16:51 jeff and with multipart disabled in firefox, both onmethoderror and onerror fire. they also fire in the staff client as expected.
16:52 jeff my test appears to have been sabatoged at least partly by muscle memory. when you are IN tab 3 in the client and you hold down alt and hit -, -, 3 -- there's very little clue that what actually happened was you did not clear cache, but you switched to tab 3. :-)

17:37 hopkinsju Good afternoon gents. Can someone help me learn how to use the newish Org Unit Hiding feature in the OPAC?
17:37 hopkinsju We've got a library system that doesn't want to see all the other systems in the consortium in the drop down
17:38 hopkinsju I can't for the life of me find where this is documented.
17:41 rfrasur hopkinsju: I can't...but thought it was entertaining that I read "newish" as "jewish" and wondered what a kosher ILS would be like.
17:42 hopkinsju In other words, "You got bupkes"?
17:43 * hopkinsju missed
17:48 jeff hopkinsju: i'm not certain that org unit hiding will give you what you want, but it might. I'm curious enough to look myself tonight.
17:49 hopkinsju jeff: Cool. I'd appreciate it. Do you know where it's documented? I could likely learn this myself if I had a starting place.
17:49 jeff also, I'm not sure I can hear the word "bupkis" without hearing Dan Aykroyd saying "We got bupkis! We turn ourselves in now, they'll give us twenty years in the electric chair!"
17:51 jeff hopkinsju: not sure. I'd start with the brief info in the 2.4 release notes, commit 0e4d2442 and possibly others surrounding.
