09:43 Dyrcona Another reason to ditch xulrunner: I sometimes get scroll bars when I need them in the staff client, and I sometimes don't. Seems to be no rhyme or reason to it, either.
09:45 mcooper joined #evergreen
09:46 dbs Dyrcona: on the same screens, or across different screens? there are often simple XUL attributes that control that sort of thing, if it's on particular screens
09:48 Dyrcona dbs: I'll have to do some more digging. I know that on a couple of screens, I never get horizontal scroll bars. Vertical scroll bars seem to be more reliable.
09:48 Dyrcona I'm using xulrunner on Linux, too. I should compare it with a windows client.
09:50 dbs Dyrcona: I think it's probably just not optimal XUL; might have been designed to contain one or two elements originally, and then over time added more elements (or longer labels).
09:50 dbs I fixed a few problems in the past, but there are likely plenty more to handle. there are explicit <scrollbar> elements you can add, too
09:51 mmorgan Configure Toolbars screen is a good example. I don't get horizontal or vertical scrollbars there. The save button is in the lower right corner, and some users can't save because of their screen resolution.
09:55 dbs I think the mantra is flex=1 style="overflow: auto" for xul elements that you want to be able to scroll, if they're cramped
09:56 * dbs heads out

10:28 bshum Dyrcona: I get that issue with no horizontal scroll bars in the item status screen when viewing the details.
10:28 phasefx mmorgan: I tried to add a scrollbar just now to that interface and it actually covers up the Save button when it appears :)
10:28 bshum Sometimes the info I'm looking for can be in the far right of the screen. On smaller resolutions.
10:28 bshum Used to drive me nuts when my laptops had lower resolution.
10:30 mmorgan phasefx: thanks for trying anyway!
10:49 gmcharlt joined #evergreen
10:52 paxed ugh. yeah, trying to use some of those UIs on a mini laptop is painful...
10:57 Dyrcona Never mind a laptop. A lot of our staff like to use 1024 x 768 or whatever on workstations. Older eyes, you know.
10:57 ericar joined #evergreen
10:58 Dyrcona My laptop is 1366 x 768.
10:59 bshum 1920 x 1080.  My poor eyes :(
10:59 mmorgan So when you add a scrollbar to a screen that doesn't have one, and it covers up pertinent parts of the screen, is that xulrunner's fault?
10:59 Dyrcona bshum: I like the higher resolutions, what I quoted is the best this laptop will do.
10:59 csharp Dyrcona: same here with the 1024 x 768
10:59 Dyrcona mmorgan: Probably.
11:00 csharp when we moved the the horizontal patron display, we got lots o' complaints
11:00 mmorgan Or can the screens have enough padding built in so that that doesn't happen?
11:00 Dyrcona mmorgan: Probably. ;)
11:01 paxed i'm at 1024x600
11:01 bshum csharp: Horizontal patron display makes me sad.

11:30 * Dyrcona feels the urge to write a blog post about matching incoming MARC records with existing records in your database.
11:30 mllewellyn joined #evergreen
11:30 rfrasur on a Friday? after a holiday?
11:31 mmorgan Dyrcona: I would be interested in reading that.
11:32 rfrasur Dyrcona: If you write it, I'll read it - but I can't guarantee any enthusiasm until Monday.
11:34 stevenyvr2 joined #evergreen
11:34 Dyrcona Well, I should see how the software to do it goes, first.
11:35 paxed i finally managed to convince olli-antti that not everything needs to be done during database conversion... so now we'll normalize author name etc. after we've converted our db from the old system to eg. so much more easier...
11:37 mllewellyn joined #evergreen
11:44 mmorgan I 'm puzzled by titles that show in the client with spaces that shouldn't be there, like "A da nce with dragons" or "Ma x and Ruby"
11:44 rfrasur That generally has to do w/ an incorrect indicator mmorgan
11:45 rfrasur for the "A da nce w/ dragons" they have an indicator of 4 when it should be 2....A+ a space (4 for the + a space)
11:46 rfrasur And "Ma x and Ruby" there's an indicator of 2 when it should be 0
11:46 mmorgan rfrasur: Thanks! That's it. Should have thought to look there.

13:01 Dyrcona Whee! Fun with SSH tunnels!
13:03 bshum Dyrcona: Whee!
13:04 _bott_ joined #evergreen
13:06 Dyrcona I can now access the fileserver at our central site from anywhere via SMB.
13:06 Dyrcona Combine that with the remote tunnel that will forward all vnc from my workstation to the laptop, and I don't need an office any more!
13:36 mcooper i love ssh tunnels =)
14:05 Dyrcona Yes, they are great for unencrypted protocols, like SIP2.
14:05 csharp have people encountered an upper file size limit for vandelay imports?
14:06 csharp I just successfully imported a 671KB file but it's not working on a 5871KB file (from the same source)
14:07 csharp it hangs on Uploading...
14:07 csharp I'm watching ls -l on the importer directory (NFS-shared) nothing there
14:09 paxed perhaps apache LimitRequestBody?
14:10 csharp I don't see that setting set in my apache config
14:12 bshum csharp: If I recall that was one of the reasons why we ended up upping the ejabberd limits.
14:13 csharp ah
14:13 bshum Because the original size was too small for certain sized MARC data
14:13 bshum So we increased by a factor of 10 back then
14:13 bshum But I don't know what to recommend on that front :(
14:13 bshum If any
14:13 csharp wouldn't I see something in the ejabberd logs about that?
14:14 bshum I think so.
14:15 * csharp doesn't see anything useful there :-/
14:15 bshum I might be leading you astray, if you're not even seeing it load into the tmp directory that seems to be a bigger issue actually.
14:15 csharp I did see the smaller file load there
14:16 csharp oh!
14:16 bshum Not any stray brick config right?
14:16 csharp it loaded
14:16 csharp hmmm
14:16 bshum That's happened to me before where it disappeared into a single brick instead of into the share.
14:16 bshum Because the brick had lost its NFS connection or whatnot.
14:16 bshum Probably unrelated.
14:16 csharp the interface just loaded with the data there, so I guess I wasn't giving it enough time (3+ mins
14:16 csharp )
14:17 Dyrcona How many records are in that file?
14:17 csharp 9800 records in the queue
14:17 Dyrcona Ah, well there's my answer.
14:19 csharp okay, so that took about 10 mins according to the logs
14:20 Dyrcona Vandelay is not know for speed.
14:20 bshum Indeed.  Or for being happy with large batches of things.
14:23 csharp too bad that all PINES *is* is large batches of things ;-)
14:24 Dyrcona csharp: What are these records for?
14:24 csharp so is vandelay the best method of auth record import?
14:24 csharp authority record updates
14:24 Dyrcona csharp: In my opinion, no it isn't.
14:24 csharp right now I'm just testing whether import works for us at all with the files I have in hand
14:25 csharp not testing matching, etc. yet
14:25 csharp Dyrcona: what would you recommend?  (I was just looking at your BSLW tools)
14:25 Dyrcona csharp: I was going to say, that I write my own tools for those sorts of things.
14:25 csharp the auth recs we have are from BSLW, incidentally
14:26 * Dyrcona shoots at stray commas.
14:26 tmccanna joined #evergreen

14:27 Dyrcona The BSLWimport.pl is designed for a rather specific work flow based on how Backstage puts files on their FTP server.
14:28 Dyrcona It could be adapted, but it assumes the files are zipped, etc.
14:29 Dyrcona csharp: Don't let me stop from testing if Vandelay will work for you. It is certainly worth your time to find out.
14:30 Dyrcona There oughta be a "you" in there somewhere.
14:46 csharp thanks

16:53 jrshaw Still trying to install Evergreen 2.4 on a Virtualbox Ubuntu server 12.04LTS. I read and re-read the install documentation for OpenSRF and still cannot find the recommended location for the tarball and where to unpack it. Suggestions?
16:53 jrshaw OpenSRF v2.2
16:53 jrshaw http://evergreen-ils.org/documentation/release/OpenSRF/RELEASE_NOTES_2_2_0.html
16:54 jrshaw http://evergreen-ils.org/documentation/install/OpenSRF/README_2_2_0.html
16:55 phasefx jrshaw: any user should be fine for the tarball and resulting package
16:56 mcooper left #evergreen
16:56 Dyrcona jrshaw: I usually do everything (almost) from the opensrf user home directory.
16:56 * phasefx does too
16:57 Dyrcona The only thing I do differently is I "sudo -i" to become root before installing the prerequisites.
16:57 Dyrcona I also install the prerequisites for both OpenSRF and Evergreen before installing either package.
16:57 jrshaw In the developers release for debian squeeze circa 2011 they park everything in /home/evergreen/OpenSRF-trunk Is that a good place or recommended place?
16:59 phasefx sure.  In the end, it's the make install that's going to put things where they ultimately need to go, and that has to be done as root (or with sudo) and can be done from anywhere
17:01 Dyrcona jrshaw: If you extract the tarballs in your home directory, you will get 1 directory for OpenSRF and 1 for Evergreen, that is what I recommend.
17:01 Dyrcona In my case, I have /home/opensrf/OpenSRF/ and /home/opensrf/Evergreen/
17:02 jrshaw Dyrcona: That's the clarity I needed. Thanks.
